Chapter 1 The Night Magic Chose Wrong
The night Elara Voss realized something was wrong with her magic, the sky over Ashbourne did not crack with thunder or tremble with warning,it simply dimmed, as if something vast and unseen had inhaled the light and forgotten to give it back. She stood alone behind the crumbling stone wall of Blackthorn House, where the other witches had gathered hours earlier to perform a binding ritual she had not been invited to join. That, in itself, was not unusual.
Elara had grown accustomed to exclusion, to the quiet shifts in conversation when she entered a room, to the way older witches studied her like an equation that refused to balance. What was unusual was the way the air bent around her now, thick and humming, pressing too close against her skin like it was trying to recognize her, and failing. She clenched her fingers, whispering the simplest incantation she knew, one meant to summon a flicker of harmless flame. Instead, the darkness at her feet moved first. It twisted, coiled, and rose like something alive and hungry.
Elara staggered back, her pulse hammering as the shadow stretched toward her wrist, brushing her skin with a cold that burned deeper than heat ever could. This wasn’t magic behaving badly. This was magic rejecting its own rules. She tried to release it, to sever the thread the way Mistress Halvine had drilled into them during training, but the connection didn’t break. It deepened. The shadow tightened, sliding up her arm like it belonged there, like it had been waiting for her. Panic flared sharp and immediate, but beneath it, buried in a place she didn’t want to acknowledge something else stirred from instinct.
Elara sucked in a breath, forcing the energy back, shoving it down with a forceful command that tasted wrong on her tongue. “Stop.” The word echoed strangely, not just in the air but inside her skull, as if something else had heard it, and disagreed. The shadow hesitated, then withdrew, melting back into nothingness as if it had never existed at all but the damage had already been done. Elara could still feel it under her skin, coiled and patient.
“Interesting,” a voice murmured from the darkness beyond the wall.
Elara spun, her heart jolting violently at the sight of a man leaning against the iron gate as though he had always been there. He didn’t belong,she knew that instantly because the air around him felt…quiet. Too quiet. Where magic usually hummed, crackled, or whispered, there was nothing. He pushed himself upright with a slow, deliberate movement, stepping forward just enough for the dim light to catch his face. He had sharp features, unreadable expression, eyes that held no trace of the distortion magic caused in ordinary humans. That alone should have been impossible. “You’re not supposed to be here,” Elara said, her voice steadier than she felt. The man tilted his head slightly, studying her with an intensity that made her skin prickle with something far more dangerous. That was curiosity. “I could say the same about you,” he replied. His voice was low, controlled, but threaded with something that didn’t quite match his calm demeanor. Something that unsettled her more than outright hostility would have.
“I live here,” Elara shot back, though the words felt weaker the moment they left her mouth because this place,this hidden corner of the witching world, had never truly felt like hers. The man’s lips curved, not quite a smile. “No,” he said quietly, taking another step closer. “You exist here. That’s different.” The distinction landed harder than it should have. Elara’s fingers curled at her sides, instinctively gathering magic again but it didn’t respond the way it usually did. It hesitated as if it were aware of him. As if it were…watching him. That was new and wrong. “Who are you?” she demanded, forcing authority into her tone. For a moment, he didn’t answer. He just looked at her, his gaze dropping briefly to her hand, to the place where the shadow had touched her, before returning to her face. “Cael,” he said finally. No title. No explanation. Just a name that seemed to settle into the space between them like it carried weight.
Elara opened her mouth to demand more, to assert control over a situation that was slipping too quickly into something she didn’t understand but the words died before they could form because the magic inside her shifted again sharper this time. It surged toward the surface with a force that made her breath hitch, and for a terrifying second, she thought she was losing control but then it stopped because something else restrained it. Cael’s gaze had changed. The calm detachment was gone, it was now replaced by something darker, something that locked onto her with unsettling precision. He stepped closer and Elara’s instincts screamed at her to move, to put distance between them, to protect herself from whatever this was but she didn’t, because for the first time in her life, the magic inside her wasn’t spiraling out of control. It was…steady. Anchored and the only thing that had changed was him.
“That shouldn’t happen,” Cael said, more to himself than to her, his voice tightening almost imperceptibly. His hand lifted, hesitating for the briefest second before closing around her wrist, the same wrist the shadow had claimed moments ago. The contact should have meant nothing. He was human. Magic didn’t respond to humans like this. It couldn’t but the second his skin met hers, the world seemed to tilt. Elara’s breath caught sharply as the energy inside her snapped into place perfectly like a lock clicking open after years of being forced shut. The sensation was immediate and overwhelming, flooding her system with a clarity she had never experienced before and beneath it, woven into every pulse, every breath was him. Cael felt it too. She saw it in the way his expression shifted, in the subtle tightening of his grip, in the flicker of something dangerously close to obsession that ignited in his eyes before he could mask it. “What are you?” he asked, but there was no real question in it anymore. Only certainty.
Elara didn’t answer. She couldn’t because the truth, whatever it was, was rising too fast, too violently, clawing its way to the surface with the same relentless hunger as the shadow that had touched her and somewhere deep within that darkness, something ancient stirred, stretching awake after a long, suffocating sleep. It felt like possession. Like something had been waiting, not for power or freedom but for him. The thought hit her with a chilling finality just as the air around them shifted again, heavier this time, charged with a presence that did not belong to either of them. Cael’s grip tightened instinctively, his body angling slightly in front of hers as his gaze snapped toward the darkness beyond the gate. Elara followed his line of sight and her blood ran cold because the shadows there were moving again and unmistakably speaking.
“You found him,” the darkness whispered and this time, it wasn’t talking to Elara
