Chapter 49. Shooting Incident
“Gideon, you better give up, and I'll find another partner who can actually handle it. I see you have no competence."
“Sorry Logan, you can't give this project to anyone. I'm sure I can handle it. You just need to wait a bit,” Gideon said persistently.
Unfortunately, Logan was not an easy person to work with. He always gave special criteria to his business partners, so that the cooperation would really bring him benefits. And Gideon didn't seem to live up to the standards.
“Have you always been this confident? Look, how much time I wasted waiting for the results of your work? I can't wait any longer, Gideon. You have to leave this project,” Logan said flatly as he puffed cigarette smoke into the air.
Gideon looked at Logan hatefully through his eyelashes. No one had ever looked down on him like Logan did.
"No one has ever been disappointed with my work. You should consider it, Mr. Hatcher."
"You should leave this project. I know your qualities, Gideon. You don't deserve to be on this project."
"Give me one more chance. I promise, I'll do it the way you want it."
Logan took a deep drag on his cigarette, before blowing the smoke into Gideon's face. He smirked as Gideon coughed and scrunched up his face.
"No chance for you."
Gideon clenched his fists under the table. His knuckles turned white. Logan had destroyed his pride and humiliated him in front of all his colleagues. Tonight he only asked for one more chance to save his business as well as his reputation, but Logan treated him like shit.
"Okay, I—"
Gideon was about to say something, but Logan stopped his words with a finger gesture when they suddenly heard a commotion from downstairs.
"What's going on down there? A woman has a tantrum because her boyfriend cheated on her huh?”Logan chuckled.
He could imagine how exciting the fight was down there. Two women fighting over one asshole.
"It doesn't seem like a woman's fight, sir," his men replied nervously.
"So, what happened?"
"A group of robbers stormed the place, sir. Ander and the others are cleaning up the mess."
"We'd better get out of here," Gideon said nervously.
Gideon panicked when he heard the gunshots from the first floor. He quickly stuffed all his belongings into his briefcase and stood up.
"I don't want to die here. Open the door. Let me out of here."
"Okay. Let's go out. Through this way."
Logan walked ahead of Gideon towards the stairs while avoiding the panicked people running towards him. They jogged towards the fire stairs, which only Logan knew where it was.
The sound of gunfire mixed with the sound of people screaming. They were busy saving themselves. Some chose to hide under tables or wherever they felt safe because they were trapped inside the bar.
Bang!
Logan lowered his head. A bullet had just shot and hit the wall. Glass shards rained down on him, Logan kept walking straight towards the fire stairs. He pushed aside the giant painting that was covering the secret door, then pushed Gideon through it.
"Get in! Give me your spare gun," Logan shouted to one of his men. He held the door with one hand, while taking the gun from his man with the other. He needed a gun to protect himself if one of the robbers was waiting for him at the kitchen exit.
"Be careful, sir."
Bang!
Bang!
“Duck down!”
He screamed, but it was too late. A bullet flew towards him, hitting him right in the left side of his chest. The gun in his hand flew out as he fell to the floor. He pressed his left chest with his palm to stop the bleeding.
"Gideon..." Logan called weakly.
Logan played back the memory of the damn shooting incident. He asked Gideon to help him when his men were dealing with damn robbers who were trying to kill him, but Gideon just froze on the spot. Gideon did nothing but stare at his pathetic condition. Everything was so messed up that night. Broken glass was everywhere. Gunshots echoed loudly. Gideon ran away and left him dying.
Logan rubbed his chin and leaned back against the black leather sofa in his room. His eyes rolled to a man who was kneeling on the floor, panting. His face was battered and covered in blood. His hands were tied behind his back. Four burly men surrounded him with baseball bats in their hands.
“So you teamed up with Cooper Smillow, huh? You already knew that Cooper Smillow sent those robbers to kill me, right?”
Gideon stared at Logan with hatred. He had been kidnapped this morning from his house when he was about to leave for the office. He had been beaten, treated like a disgusting piece of shit, and to make matters worse, Logan had trampled on his dignity.
“You coward. You didn’t have the courage to face me alone, instead you sent your men to beat me up.”
“Why get my hands dirty when I have people who will kill for me?” Logan said haughtily as he fiddled with the Glock in his hand.
He was considering killing Gideon, or keeping him alive for his revenge plan on Cooper Smillow.
“How much did Cooper pay you to be a decoy?”
Gideon didn't answer, just glared at Logan. A second later, a heavy blow landed on his stomach. His body jerked backwards, tumbling on the floor like a worthless sack of cement, but two of Logan's men grabbed his arm hard and put him on his knees again.
“Answer me, Gideon. You want your face ruined and spend your whole life in the hospital with tubes in your body and bip in your neck, huh?”
Gideon's face paled at the thought of what would happen to him if he refused to answer Logan's questions.
"I can't tell you," Gideon gasped. He spat fresh blood onto the carpet.
"He'll kill me if I break our deal."
"That's your risk. You dare play with fire with us."
Logan gestured to his men with his chin.
"Hit him again. In the stomach."
"D-don't! Don't hit me. Please!" Gideon shouted in frustration.
"I'll tell you everything. About Cooper's secret."
