Chapter 70 UNITED IN MINDS

Chapter 70 UNITED IN MINDS
CHAPTER SEVENTY
SAMANTHA’S POV
.
Kane is having a soft spot for you.
And worse… it might lead to his death.
I sat up abruptly, my breath uneven. For a moment, I just stayed there, staring at nothing, trying to gather myself. But there was no peace to hold on to. Only confusion. Only fear.
I couldn’t stay here.

I slipped out of the bed quietly, careful not to make a sound.

The hallway was silent. My bare feet barely made a sound as I moved quickly, my mind already made up.
I needed to see Kate.

The moment I stepped outside and headed toward the other mansion, I felt it. The shift. The way the air changed around me. The workers noticed me immediately, their movements slowing, their eyes following me with a strange kind of respect that hadn’t been there before.
It made me uncomfortable.

I spotted Abel and walked straight to him, ignoring the looks.
“Master said you should take me to see Kate,” I said, keeping my voice steady.
He didn’t question me. He just nodded.
“Follow me.”

We walked in silence to a different building, one that felt distant from the main mansion. Isolated. Cold. My stomach twisted the closer we got, my mind already painting ugly images of what I was about to see.
I expected the worst.
Bruises. Blood. Pain.

But when I stepped inside the room, it was different.
Kate was lying on a bed.
Not beaten. Not broken the way I imagined. But she wasn’t okay either. Her hands were chained, the metal cuffs tight around her wrists, and even from where I stood, I could see how weak she looked.
Relief and guilt hit me at the same time.

I rushed to her side immediately.
“Kate… Kate…”

Her eyes fluttered open slowly, struggling to focus. When they finally landed on me, something soft broke through the pain.

“Samantha… is that you?”
My throat tightened.

“Yes… it’s me.”

She let out a weak breath, something close to a broken laugh.

“Fuck… Samantha. I’m so sorry… I’m so sorry for abandoning you after bringing you out…”
I shook my head quickly, grabbing her hand carefully, mindful of the chains.

“No. Don’t say that. Don’t even think like that,” I said softly. “You did it to save me. I know that. And I appreciate it. I really do.”
Her eyes filled with tears, but she didn’t argue.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
I swallowed hard before asking the question that had been burning inside me.

“How are you? What happened? Why are you here like this?” My voice dropped slightly. “Don’t tell me it’s because of me…”

“I don’t know,” she whispered, her voice breaking as tears slipped down her face.
I tightened my hold on her hand.

“I promise you… nothing is going to happen to you. I won’t let it.”
She stared at me for a moment, then shook her head weakly.

“Sam… you need to be careful,” she said, her tone suddenly serious despite her condition.
“Kane… he can be calm, he can act like he cares, but he’s ruthless. You know that.”
I looked away.

“We need to take him down,” she continued, her voice gaining a bit of strength. “And you… you’re close to him now. I can see it. What are you doing, Sam?”
My chest tightened.

“No… Kate, no,” I said quickly, shaking my head. “I don’t want to get involved in anything that could endanger both our lives. I’m already barely surviving as it is. I’m just… a mutate.”
Her gaze didn’t leave my face.

“What’s happening to you?” she asked quietly.
I couldn’t answer.
I dropped my gaze, my fingers tightening around hers as I tried to hide everything written all over my face.
But she saw it anyway.

“You’re falling for him, aren’t you?”
Silence.
I didn’t trust my voice.
I didn’t trust myself.

“How dare you…” she whispered, disbelief laced in her tone. “How dare you fall for that monster?”
Her words cut deep.
I felt my eyes sting, and before I could stop myself, I started sniffing, my emotions slipping out of my control.

“I just want to put an end to all this,” I said quietly, my voice trembling.
She frowned.

“What do you mean?”
I hesitated, then looked at her.

“I found a way,” I said slowly. “A way to end the mutate curse. To free the other girls… all of us.”
Her expression shifted instantly.

“You must be joking,” she said, then started coughing, her body shaking slightly.
I waited until she settled before speaking again.

“It’s dangerous,” I admitted. “That’s why I’m not telling you everything. I don’t want to drag you into something worse.”
She stared at me like she didn’t recognize me anymore.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” she snapped weakly. “You need to decide whose side you’re on, Samantha.”
Her words hit harder than I expected.

“Savy is coming,” she continued. “And when he does, Kane will fall. You think his soft spot for you will save him? It won’t. You’ll see.”
I swallowed hard.

KANE’S POV
I knew she left the moment she did.
I didn’t need anyone to tell me.
I saw it.
The way she slipped out of the room like she didn’t belong there. Which she didn't.

It irritated me more than it should have.
I leaned back slightly, running a hand through my hair, trying to steady my thoughts.
I shouldn’t have let that happen.

Letting her sleep on the same bed as me… it was a mistake. One I couldn’t seem to justify no matter how I looked at it.
And what pissed me off even more was the fact that I didn’t regret it as much as I should.
That bothered me.
A lot.

I gestured for the nanny to come in. She had been standing by the door, as usual.
She stepped inside quietly.

“Let me get Micky up for school,” she whispered.
I nodded.
“Alright.”
She hesitated for a second before speaking again.

“These days… she’s been asking about Samantha a lot,” she said carefully. “She’s starting to think she’s Sally.”
My jaw tightened.

“You need to put an end to it.”
I knew that.
I really did.
But for some reason… I didn’t want to.

I've seen then on the camera feed severally
.
For the first time in a long time, she looked… genuinely happy. And Samantha was the reason.
Her laughter. Her presence. The way she made everything feel normal.
Why would I take that away?
Why would I ruin the only real happiness my child had ever shown?

“Kane… can you hear me?”
I blinked, snapping out of my thoughts.
I nodded.

“What is it?”

“Is your my mom and Eliana still around?”
“Yes, sir.”
I frowned immediately.

“Why are they still here?” I asked, irritation creeping into my voice.
I didn’t like it.
I didn’t like them being here longer than necessary.

Not when things were already… complicated.

My phone rang, cutting through my thoughts.
I glanced at the screen, my expression hardening slightly as I saw the caller ID.
Without another word, I turned and walked out, already answering the call.
