Chapter 27 — Awkward
Kyle's POV:
Okay. All I have to do is invite her. But why am I so nervous? It's not like I'm about to ask her to marry me.
Not yet.
"Shut up, brain!" I scolded the tiny voice that spoke up in my head.
But what if she refuses?
She won't. Just tell her your dad is the one that wants to have dinner.
My thoughts were interrupted when my phone chimed. I tapped on the green button and placed it against my ear.
"It's Alexis. I was wondering if you wanted to take Kylie out today?"
Right on time.
"No, I'm busy today."
"Work?"
"It's a Saturday. Why would I go to work on a Saturday?"
"Well, I was just guessing. You always call me to ask if you can hang out with Kylie, but today you didn't."
I glanced at the clock. It was ten to ten, and I smirked. "In other words, you were missing me."
She scoffed, "Never mind. I'm hanging up!"
"No, wait!" I yelled.
"Do you want to have dinner tonight?"
She paused. "No, I'm busy."
"But my father is the one requesting your presence. Actually, I said that all wrong. The thing is that I was supposed to call you to tell you that my father officially wants to meet Kylie, and he thought having dinner with the both of you would be ideal."
"Oh… I see. What time is the dinner?"
"Seven."
"Okay then, we'll be there."
"I think you want me almost as much as I want you, but something's holding you back."
"I'm hanging up now!" she quickly said.
Now to prepare for tonight.
Alexis's POV:
After I got off the phone with Kyle, I realized something: I hadn't set foot inside that house since everything with Kyle and Penelope.
Oh, God! What is happening!?
"What's got your panties in a twist, baby?" Sophie's voice echoed through the room.
"Kyle. His parents invited Kylie and me over for dinner, and I just couldn't refuse!" I confessed.
"Aw, baby," she started while stroking my hair. "I'm glad you didn't turn them down. Kylie needs to meet and know everyone in her family. But why is it bothering you?"
"I don't know! Won't it be awkward? I mean, they know my real name is not Mackenzie Pointer and that Kyle and I had a relationship in the past. I just don't know what to expect there."
"Days have passed; they must have gotten used to it by now, and besides, the wedding is canceled, and it's not like you and Kyle were getting it on while he was engaged to Penelope, right?"
I didn't answer, so she continued.
"Even if you guys were getting it on, it's not like his parents ever caught you guys in the act, right?" she asked again, and I still didn't answer.
Her eyes went wide.
"They caught you guys?!" She gaped at me, and I silently cursed my luck.
"Not technically. His mom did see him in my house once, and it was really early, so…" I trailed off.
Early in the morning? So you guys had unprotected sex once again!?" she whisper-yelled.
"Well, I'm not sure… We were dunk and…"
My sister buried her head in her hands while slightly shaking it. "Girl! The first time you guys had unplanned sex, Kylie was brought into this world. I hope you—"
"What! No! No! I highly doubt it."
"Did he pull out?!"
"Sophie!" I yelled, sounding slightly like I was scolding her.
"Don't yell at me. I'm just trying to figure out if I'll be an aunt again soon."
"Well, no, you won’t."
"Like I'd take your word for it," she scoffed at me.
I ignored her and continued, "Back to what I was saying…"
"Oh… Well, just avoid eye contact with the lady. You know women talk with their eyes, so just avoid her gaze, and it will all be fine."
"Thanks, sis!" I smiled.
"Anytime, girl." She smiled back.
"Where's Lili?"
"She's downstairs having breakfast and watching cartoons."
I nodded my head in understanding.
"I'll be going to Mark's in the afternoon, and I'll be out all night. I'm aware that your fashion sense has gotten a lot better than when you were in high school—"
"Please don't remind me!" I let out an exasperated sigh and covered my face in shame.
I really wore long skirts, vests, sweaters, and black flats with socks for no reason. It was no wonder Christina bullied me. I actually burnt all my high school clothes when I got to college, and well, I couldn't even find my glasses anymore. I decided to stick with contacts.
"Hello? Am I talking to myself?" Sophie's voice passed through my ears, and I was brought back to reality when I saw her waving her hand in front of my face.
"Sorry, I spaced out," I truthfully told her.
"I was laughing at your high school days. How I would tell you to go shopping with me, but you wouldn't."
"I still don't get why you even brought up my fashion sense in school," I hissed.
"Well, I was going to say that since I won't be around to help you decide what to wear, I should help you right now."
"Oh, thank goodness you brought it up. You know how indecisive I can be when it comes to clothes."
"I know, baby sister. I know." She smirked, and I rolled my eyes.
"So, what do you suggest?"
"Well, since you're meeting your future in-laws officially, I think that black, long-sleeved dress. It's not too revealing, but not too nun-ish either. It's the right amount of sexy."
"Okay, I know the one."
"Then, for Kylie, there's that blue dress that her father bought for her. Let her wear that."
I nodded.
"Hair. You should definitely curl your hair! You look amazing when your hair is curled. Then put Lili's hair in a ponytail," she instructed.
"Yes, ma'am." I gave her a salute, and she left.
Time went by pretty fast today. Either that or I was too nervous. Sophie had already left to go to Mark's, and I was alone with Lili.
I put on the dress Sophie suggested, and I decided to go for a natural look with the makeup. I curled my hair, and I looked good. Sophie was right after all.
Is this too much?
I also got Kylie ready, and it seemed we were running a little bit late. I hurriedly drove to casa de la Matthews.
As I pulled into the house, I could feel my heart beat faster.
Why was I so nervous? It wasn't the first time I was meeting them.
I got out of the car and held Kylie's hand while we walked to the front door. I rang the doorbell once, but nobody answered. I rang it again, but still, nobody answered. I was about to hit it for the third time when the door opened.
The face of the person who opened the door was unfamiliar, and I just stood there in thought.
Could he be a serial killer?
Maybe he abducted the Matthews and was waiting for us to go in so he could take us as more hostages.
"They are waiting for you in the dining room," he announced, bringing me back to reality.
My grip on Kylie's hand became firmer as we walked to the dining room.
"Daddy!" Kylie yelled as she yanked her hand away from mine and took off, running towards a figure at the end of the room.
"Kylie! Stop running!" I called out after her and increased my pace.
I awkwardly stopped when I saw everyone standing on their feet with Kylie in Kyle's arms.
