Chapter 110 The Fracturing Of Loyalty
Chapter 110 The Fracturing Of Loyalty
Third Person POV
The corridor was empty when Lena stormed through it, her footsteps echoing against the stone walls like thunderclaps.
Her face was flushed with anger, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. She had been holding it together for days, watching the pack unravel, but this was the height of it for her.
She was done pretending.
She found Kieran in the war room, leaning over a map, his expression carefully neutral. He looked up when she entered, a flicker of surprise crossing his face before it was replaced by that familiar, easy smile.
"Lena," he said, his voice smooth as silk. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
She didn't bother with pleasantries. She crossed the room in three quick strides, slamming her hands down on the table between them.
"The rumors," she said, her voice sharp as a blade. "About the Elders calling for a vote, about replacing Zarek. Why haven't you done anything about them?"
Kieran's smile didn't waver, but something flickered behind his eyes. Something that looked almost like irritation.
"The rumors," he repeated slowly, as if tasting the word. "Lena, you know how this pack works. Rumors are like weeds. They spring up everywhere, and the best thing you can do is let them die on their own."
"Die on their own?" She laughed, the sound hollow and bitter. "They're not dying, Kieran. They're spreading. Every day, more wolves are talking. Every day, more wolves are questioning Zarek's leadership. And you're just standing by, letting it happen."
"What would you have me do?" He straightened, his voice taking on a sharper edge. "Round up everyone who's talking and silence them? That's not how leadership works, Lena. That's how you create martyrs."
"Then do something!" She slammed her fist against the table, the impact echoing through the room. "Make a statement. Reassure them, show them that Zarek is still in control, that everything is fine. Do your job as acting Alpha!"
Kieran's expression darkened. The easy smile faded, replaced by a colder expression.
"My job," he repeated, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You want to talk about my job? My job is to keep this pack running while Zarek is gone. My job is to make decisions that are best for everyone, not just the ones who are too scared to face the truth."
Lena's eyes narrowed. "What truth?"
Kieran stepped around the table, moving closer to her. His eyes were cold, nothing like the easygoing Gamma she had known for years.
"The truth that Zarek is not here," he scoffed out. "The truth that he left without a word, without any concern for what might happen to the pack in his absence. The truth that he's been distracted for weeks, making reckless decisions, putting his personal desires above the good of the pack."
Lena stared at him, her heart pounding. "That's not true. Zarek loves this pack. He have sacrificed everything for this pack."
"Has he?" Kieran's voice was emotionless. "Or has he sacrificed everything for her? For Sylvia? Every decision he's made since she arrived has been about her. The pack has become secondary."
Lena shook her head, refusing to believe it. "You're wrong. Zarek would never—"
"I'm not wrong." Kieran stepped closer, his eyes boring into hers. "I've seen it. We've all seen it. And now he's gone, leaving us to deal with the consequences of his choices."
Lena felt the anger boiling inside her, hot and sharp. "You're one to talk," she said, her voice shaking with rage. "You've been acting strange for weeks. Disappearing at odd hours. Having secret meetings. You're hiding something, Kieran. I can feel it."
Something flickered in Kieran's eyes. Surprise, maybe.
"You're paranoid," he said, his voice cold. "Maybe you should take a step back and focus on your own responsibilities instead of imagining conspiracies."
"Don't patronize me." She stepped closer, her eyes blazing. "I've been part of this pack longer than you've been Gamma. I know when something is wrong. And right now, everything is wrong."
Kieran laughed, the sound sharp and brittle. "You want to know what's wrong? You. You're what's wrong. You've been so focused on protecting Zarek that you can't see what's right in front of you."
"And what's that?"
"The truth." He stepped closer, his voice dropping to barely a whisper. "Zarek is not part of us, he is different and might one day turn his back on us. And the pack is tired of pretending otherwise."
Lena felt the blood drain from her face. "You don't mean that."
"I mean every word." His eyes were cold, hard, utterly devoid of the warmth she had once known. "Zarek is a hybrid. He's not a true Alpha. He's a compromise, a temporary solution that has outlived its usefulness. And it's time for him to be replaced."
Lena stared at him, her mind reeling. This wasn't the Kieran she knew. This was someone else.
"You're planning something," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're working with Soren. You're both trying to take Zarek down."
Kieran's smile returned, but it was different now. Cold. Calculating. "You're smarter than you look, Lena. I'll give you that."
"Answer me." Her voice rose, sharp and desperate. "Are you working with Soren?"
Kieran didn't answer. He just stood there, watching her with those cold, unreadable eyes.
"It doesn't matter what I'm planning," he said finally. "What matters is that you're out of line. You're questioning my leadership, spreading doubt, causing unrest. And that's something I can't allow."
Lena laughed, the sound hollow and bitter. "You can't allow? You're not the Alpha, Kieran. You're just a Gamma who's forgotten his place."
His eyes flashed with anger, the mask slipping for just a moment. "Careful, Lena. You're treading on dangerous ground."
"I'm not afraid of you."
"You should be."
Before she could respond, the door swung open. Soren stepped into the room, his presence commanding, his eyes cold and assessing.
"What's going on here?" he asked, his voice smooth as silk.
Kieran straightened, his expression shifting back to that familiar, easy smile. "Nothing, Elder. Just a minor disagreement."
"Minor?" Lena's voice rose. "He's planning to take down Zarek. He's working with you. I know it."
Soren's eyes narrowed, his gaze shifting to Kieran. "Is this true?"
Kieran laughed, the sound light and dismissive. "She's overwrought. The stress of the situation is getting to her. She doesn't know what she's saying."
"I know exactly what I'm saying!" Lena stepped forward, her hands clenched at her sides. "I know you're both planning something. And I'm going to stop you."
Soren's expression etched with irritation.
"Guards," he called, his voice carrying through the room. "Take Lena to her quarters. She needs to rest."
Two guards appeared in the doorway, their expressions neutral. They moved toward Lena, their hands reaching for her.
"Don't touch me!" She pulled away, her eyes blazing. "You can't do this. I'm a member of this pack, I have rights."
Soren's smile was cold, predatory. "You're a member of this pack who has lost her way. You need time to reflect on your actions. Time to remember your place."
Lena struggled as the guards grabbed her arms, pulling her toward the door.
"Let me go!" she shouted, her voice echoing through the room. "You're making a mistake. You're all making a mistake!"
Kieran watched her go without saying a word.
Soren turned to him, his voice low. "We need to be careful. She's getting too close to the truth."
Kieran nodded slowly. "I know. But she's not a threat. She's just a woman who doesn't know when to stop fighting."
"Don't underestimate her." Soren's eyes were cold, calculating. "She's more dangerous than you think."
The door slammed shut, cutting off Lena's shouts.
