Chapter 107 Rumors
Chapter 107 Rumors
Sylvia POV
I brought out the book the moment I stepped into my room.
As I flipped through gently, a piece of paper fell out. I quickly reached for it.
It was folded into many squares.
I took her time to open it.
I read it out slowly:
> My dearest daughter,
If you are reading this, then you have found the tree. You have found the answers you were seeking. And you are ready to know the truth.
I was a witch, born of the ancient bloodlines, sworn to protect the sacred places. I fell in love with a wolf, a man of strength and honor, and together we created you. A child of both worlds. A child of prophecy.
The prophecy speaks of a child who will rise to unite the packs and the witches. A child who will end the war and bring peace to both worlds. That child is you, Sylvia. You are the one the prophecy speaks of.
But there are those who would use you for their own purposes. Those who would twist the prophecy to their own ends. You must be careful. You must trust no one. And you must find the silver knife, the key to unlocking your true power.
I love you, my daughter. I have always loved you and I believe in you.
Find the knife. Embrace your destiny. And save us all.
My daughter,
Seraphina."
I didn’t understand what the letter meant, why was it mentioning my name and Seraphina name together.
While still trying to figure it out, my thoughts were disrupted by Cassie who pushed open my door.
I quickly hid the book, then looked straight at Cassie. “Cassie? What's wrong?"
Cassie stepped inside, closing the door behind her. Her heart was pounding, her words tumbling out in a rush.
"Something's happening," she said, grabbing Sylvia's arm. "The Elders are calling for a vote. They want to remove Zarek as Alpha."
I felt the blood drain from my face, my heart dropping into my stomach.
"What?" I whispered, my voice barely audible. "What are you talking about?"
Cassie's eyes were wide with fear. "I heard it in the breakfast hall. They're saying Zarek is unfit to lead. That his hybrid nature makes him unstable. That the pack needs someone stronger."
I was unable to register what she was saying, it couldn’t be true.
Sylvia," she said, grabbing my arm. "What does it mean?"
"I don’t know."
My heart dropped. “It can’t be true.”
I felt the world tilt beneath my feet. "That's insane. Zarek has done nothing but protect this pack. He's sacrificed everything for them."
"I know." Cassie's eyes were filled with worry. "But the rumors are spreading fast. People are scared. They're listening to the Elders."
"And who's behind it?" I demanded. "Who's spreading these rumors?"
Cassie shook her head. "I don't know. But it's someone powerful, someone who wants Zarek gone."
I thought about Kieran again. "Kieran," I whispered.
Cassie's eyes widened. "You think he's behind it?"
"I think he can help." I shook my head, my mind racing. "I'm going to find out."
I turned and walked away, my steps purposeful, my heart pounding.
—
I found him near the eastern training grounds, his back to me, his posture relaxed and casual. He was watching a group of younger wolves spar, his head tilted slightly, a faint smile playing on his lips.
He looked like he didn't have a care in the world.
"Kieran."
He turned at the sound of my voice, his face lighting up with a bright, easy smile. It was the same smile he always wore, the one that made everyone feel like they were his closest friend.
"Sylvia!" He stepped toward me, his arms spreading in a welcoming gesture. "I was hoping I would run into you. You look well. How are you feeling?"
I forced a smile, not wanting to give anything away. "I'm fine. Just... a lot on my mind."
"I can imagine." He nodded knowingly. "With Zarek gone and everything else going on, it's been a stressful time for all of us. But you know what they say, this too shall pass."
I studied him, searching for any sign of deception. But his expression was open, friendly, completely disarming.
"Have you heard the rumors?" I asked, getting straight to the point. "About the Elders calling for a vote? About them wanting to replace Zarek?"
Kieran's smile faltered for just a moment, barely a flicker. Then it was back, brighter than ever.
"Rumors," he said, waving a hand dismissively. "You know how this pack is. Everyone's always gossiping about something. It's just the stress of the situation getting to people. It'll die down soon enough."
I shook my head, frustration building in my chest. "I don't think it's that simple. There are people spreading these rumors, Kieran. People who want Zarek gone. We can't just ignore it."
He shrugged, his expression carefully neutral. "What do you want me to do, Sylvia? Round up everyone who's talking and tell them to stop?"
"No." I stepped closer, my voice dropping. "But we could make a statement. Something to reassure the pack. Show them that Zarek is still in control, that everything is fine."
Kieran laughed, the sound light and easy. "A statement? Sylvia, if we start making statements every time someone spreads a rumor, we'd never stop. The best thing we can do is ignore it. Let it die on its own."
"But—"
"Trust me." He placed a hand on my shoulder, his grip firm but gentle. "I've been in this pack a lot longer than you have. I know how these things work. The rumors will fade, and everything will go back to normal."
I wanted to argue. I wanted to tell him that this was different, that I could feel something dark brewing beneath the surface. But the words wouldn't come. He was so calm, so reassuring, that I almost believed him.
"Besides," he continued, his smile widening, "we have more important things to focus on. Like you, for instance. You've been through so much lately. You need to take care of yourself."
I forced a smile, not wanting to seem suspicious. "I'm fine. Really."
"Are you?" He tilted his head, studying me with those sharp, perceptive eyes. "Because you look like you haven't slept in days. You look like you're carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders."
I opened my mouth to deny it, but the words wouldn't come.
Kieran's expression softened, he seemed concerned.
"Listen," he said, his voice gentle. "I know things are hard right now. I know you're worried about Zarek. But you can't let it consume you. You need to take a break. Clear your head."
I shook my head slowly. "I can't. Not with everything that's happening."
"Then let me help you." He stepped closer, his eyes warm and inviting. "There's a place I know. A beautiful spot in the park, hidden away from all the noise. It's peaceful there. Calm. I think you'd really like it."
I felt a chill run down my spine. Something about the way he said it, the way his eyes glittered with an intensity I hadn't noticed before, made me uneasy.
"Thank you," I said, stepping back. "But I don't think I can. I'm not feeling well. I just... I need to be alone right now."
Something flickered in Kieran's eyes. For just a moment, I saw it. Anger. Then it was gone, replaced by that familiar, easy smile.
"Of course," he said, his voice smooth as silk. "I understand. You take all the time you need. But if you change your mind, you know where to find me."
I nodded, my heart pounding. "Thank you, Kieran. I appreciate it."
I turned and walked away, my steps quick and purposeful. I could feel his gaze on my back, heavy and watchful.
I didn't look back.
