Chapter 71: Against All Odds

Clara knelt beside Donald, her hands trembling as she checked his wound. "We need to get you help," she urged, her voice laced with concern.

Donald's breaths came in shallow gasps as he struggled to stay conscious. "I'll be fine," he insisted, though the pain radiating from his chest told a different story.

"We can't just leave you here," Clara argued, her eyes brimming with tears. "You saved me, now let me save you."

With a heavy heart, Donald nodded, knowing that Clara was right. Together, they managed to get him to his feet, leaning on each other for support as they stumbled through the wilderness.

Hours passed in a blur of pain and exhaustion as they made their way back to civilization. With each step, Donald's strength waned, his vision growing dimmer with each passing moment.

But just when all hope seemed lost, they stumbled upon a small cabin nestled in the woods. With Clara's help, Donald collapsed onto the doorstep, his breaths coming in ragged gasps as he fought to stay conscious.

"Help!" Clara cried out, pounding on the door with all her might. "Please, we need help!"

Seconds felt like hours as they waited for a response, their hearts pounding in their chests with fear and uncertainty.

Finally, the door creaked open, revealing a grizzled old man with kind eyes. "What happened?" he asked, his voice filled with concern.

"We need a doctor," Clara pleaded, her voice trembling with desperation. "Please, he's hurt."

Without hesitation, the man ushered them inside, his hands gentle as he helped Donald onto a makeshift bed. "Rest now," he said softly, his voice a soothing balm in the midst of chaos. "You're safe here."

As Donald drifted into unconsciousness, he couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude wash over him. Despite the odds stacked against them, they had managed to survive, and for that, he was eternally grateful.

Donald blinked against the harsh glare of the hospital lights, his mind foggy as he tried to piece together what had happened. The memories flooded back in fragments, each one more painful than the last.

"Donald, you're awake," Clara's voice cut through the haze, bringing a small measure of clarity to his muddled thoughts.

He turned to see her sitting by his bedside, her eyes red-rimmed with exhaustion but filled with relief. "Clara," he croaked, his voice rough from disuse. "What happened?"

"You were shot," she replied, her voice trembling with emotion. "But you're going to be okay. The doctors say you'll make a full recovery."

Donald winced as the pain in his chest flared anew, a stark reminder of the danger he had faced. "Where are we?" he asked, his gaze sweeping over the sterile hospital room.

"We're in the nearest hospital," Clara explained, her hand reaching out to gently grasp his own. "You've been unconscious for hours. I was so worried."

Donald's heart clenched at the worry etched on Clara's face, the weight of her concern settling heavily on his shoulders. "I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I never meant for any of this to happen."

Clara shook her head, her eyes brimming with tears. "Don't apologize," she insisted, her voice fierce with determination. "You saved my life, Donald. I owe you everything."

Despite the pain radiating through his body, Donald managed a weak smile. "We're in this together, Clara," he vowed, his grip tightening around her hand. "No matter what happens, we'll get through it together."

The hospital room felt suffocatingly sterile, the antiseptic scent mingling with the faint aroma of flowers from the bouquet on the bedside table. Donald's gaze swept over the room, his senses on high alert despite his weakened state.

"I don't like this," he muttered, his voice strained with unease.

Clara glanced at him, concern etched into every line of her face. "What do you mean?" she asked, her brow furrowing in confusion.

"This place," Donald replied, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the room. "It feels too... exposed. Vulnerable."

Clara's expression softened with understanding as she reached out to brush a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "I know it's scary, Donald," she murmured, her touch soothing against his fevered skin. "But you're safe here. The doctors are taking good care of you."

Donald forced a weak smile, though his unease remained palpable. "I hope you're right, Clara," he said, his voice tinged with doubt. "But something doesn't feel right. I can't shake this feeling that we're being watched."

Clara's eyes widened with concern, her hand tightening around his. "You're just tired, Donald," she insisted, though her voice wavered slightly. "You need to rest."

But Donald couldn't shake the feeling of impending danger, the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end. He knew he needed to stay vigilant, to keep his guard up even in the supposed safety of the hospital room. Because wherever he was, trouble seemed to follow. And this time would be no different.

Donald's senses went into overdrive as he detected the faint sound of footsteps approaching his room. Instinct kicked in, and he tensed, ready for whatever threat was about to reveal itself.

As the door creaked open, Donald's heart rate skyrocketed. He feigned sleep, keeping his breathing steady as he waited for the intruder to make their move.

A figure slipped into the room, moving with cat-like silence. Donald's muscles tensed, adrenaline coursing through his veins as he prepared to strike.

But before the assassin could get close, Donald lunged from the bed with surprising speed, catching them off guard. With a swift, well-placed kick, he sent the intruder sprawling to the ground.

"Who sent you?" Donald demanded, his voice low and dangerous as he pinned the would-be killer to the floor.

The assassin's eyes widened in fear, but they remained silent, refusing to betray their employer.

Donald's grip tightened, his frustration boiling over. "Tell me!" he growled, his voice echoing through the room.

But the assassin remained stubbornly silent, their lips sealed tight.

With a frustrated sigh, Donald glanced around the room, searching for any sign of assistance. But it was just him and the assassin, locked in a deadly struggle with no one to help.

Summoning every ounce of strength he had left, Donald delivered a final blow, rendering the assassin unconscious. As they slumped to the floor, Donald knew he had narrowly escaped death once again. But the danger was far from over. He needed to find out who had sent this assassin—and why—before they came back for another attempt on his life.
