Chapter 328 Player Gets Played
Chapter 328 Player Gets Played
Axel's POV
The line outside Club Nocturne stretched halfway down the block, bodies pressed together like sardines waiting to get inside. I strolled past them all, catching whiffs of various supernatural creatures mixed in with humans. There were vampires, witches, a couple werewolves—just about everything.
This place had been neutral territory for years. No fighting, no complaints. Just young-looking people looking to have a good time at a nightclub. The perfect meeting spot.
I noticed two hunters trailing about twenty feet behind me. I couldn't help but smile. When I told Maddox, the leader of the hunter team, that I was meeting an informant, he nodded and whispered to two of his men. I had to pretend I couldn't hear, but I actually heard him telling them to follow me. Not because he didn't trust me, but because he wanted to make sure I was protected. Sweet of him, really.
The bouncer, a bulky vampire with arms the size of my thighs, stood at the entrance checking IDs. When I approached, I gave him my name and flashed my ID. I hoped this bloodsucker was good at his job. I didn't need any trouble tonight.
Once inside, the music hit me like a physical force, the bass thumping in my chest as bodies writhed against each other on the dance floor. I bet there was a lot of cross-species mingling going on. Just my kind of place. You could get the strangest of strange here. I'd have to come back before we left town. Maybe find myself a hot vampire mama to hook up with. I'd been craving a cold lover ever since I tried to pursue Helena.
I scanned the bar area and spotted her immediately—a redhead with glasses, just as described. Evelyn Sinclair was perched on a bar stool, wearing a tight black dress with a small slit up the side that revealed a smooth, tempting thigh. Her legs were crossed, and she wore what looked like expensive heels. I licked my lips. Maybe I could take her to the bathroom for a quickie. She looked like the type who would scream. If I couldn't seal the deal tonight, I'd try again after this was all over.
I made my way toward her, leaning against the bar as I looked her up and down. "The moon is beautiful tonight."
She didn't even look at me as she replied, "It's beautiful every night."
"Except on the nights of the dark moon," I countered.
"On those nights, it's more beautiful," she said. "Some of the most wonderful creatures hide in the darkness of the dark moon."
I grinned. "What's your name, Red?"
"Evelyn Sinclair." She turned to me, her blue eyes piercing. "How do you want to do this?"
"That's a beautiful name." I smiled and leaned closer.
"Stop," she hissed. "I'm here to work."
I leaned in close to her ear. "Check the mirror behind the bar. You see those two men who clearly don't belong here? They're hunters. They're following me to make sure I don't cause trouble. I have a reputation. Play along, and I'll make it worth your time. Maybe give you a taste of something sweet when we're done."
She didn't react to my whisper at all. Moon Goddess, she was almost as cold as a vampire. It was damn sexy.
Evelyn leaned toward me, running a finger down my chest. "There's something you should probably know about me, Axel," she said sweetly.
Goddess, I loved the way she said my name. It dripped sweetly from her tongue. I could almost imagine her crying it out when I made her see stars.
"What's that, baby?" I placed my hand on her knee, slowly sliding it up her thigh.
Suddenly there was a sharp pain in my chest. I looked down to see she had grabbed and twisted my nipple ring.
"I don't sleep with players," she growled.
I whimpered softly. I'd had my nipple ring tugged playfully before, but never this roughly. It was starting to really hurt.
She released me and shoved me back onto my stool. I sniffed the air—not even a hint of arousal from her. I ran a hand through my hair and glanced at the mirror, seeing the hunters snickering. This was the first time they'd seen me get rejected. Hell, this was the first time I'd been rejected since I was a pup, all gangly and not muscled up yet. It took me back. I remember the girl who rejected me back then, in ninth grade. The popular one. I ended up sleeping with her and all her friends before graduation.
But this girl wasn't like that. She clearly wasn't vain. She was obviously immune to the appeal of my body. I liked that. I'd have to work harder for this girl.
"I'm sorry, Evelyn. I just got excited. You're so gorgeous, I couldn't control how much I wanted you. I wanted you to play along so I could try to seduce you later by learning what makes you tick," I said with a smile.
"Trying the honesty tactic? Tell enough truth to make me think you're honest and soften toward you? Not happening," she scoffed.
"I'm not a player. I'm just having fun before I settle down. You should have some fun too, baby. I bet you're a hundred times sexier when you orgasm," I said with a wink.
"You're disgusting and would never figure that out on your own. Now, can we complete this exchange? I want to go home and shower," she said with disgust.
"I get it. It's because I'm a werewolf, right? Try a walk on the wild side. Try a werewolf, baby. I bet you'd be ruined for those weak witch boys after."
"I wouldn't sleep with you if you were human, werewolf, vampire, or witch. I'm not a discriminator, I'm a woman with standards. You should learn the difference." She pulled out a manila envelope.
I took out my own envelope, folded to look like it contained cash. We exchanged them, making it look like I was paying for information. I checked the photos inside while she pretended to count money.
"Oh, I get it. You like to play with the ladies yourself. My bad, player. I usually have a good nose for these things," I chuckled.
Despite her coldness, when she smiled, her whole face transformed. Damn, what a waste that she was a lesbian. She was warm to the touch but cold in attitude. But that smile, I fucking loved it.
Evelyn slid off her stool and moved closer to me. She looked me dead in the eyes with those ice-blue orbs, a hint of mischief in them.
"I date men, not women, and not you. I would never sleep with you. Stop trying. You will never get me, wolf boy." She paused. "I'm leaving now. Don't follow me."
Then she turned and walked toward the offices and bathrooms. I watched her hips sway slightly as she walked.
Damn, that was one hell of a woman.
I want that, Silas said in my head.
I want that too, buddy. She's the only one who has ever genuinely rejected us. The chase will be glorious, I replied.
Not chase and mate. Possess and love. That is our mate. I will accept no other.
Are you sure? We could have so many other women.
None like her.
I smiled as I accepted Silas's decision. This would be a different kind of chase. From tonight on, I would pursue only my little witch. One day, she would be mine.
