Chapter 22 New rule
Bones littered the floor like stones. It looked dried and scary, especially in this dark dungeon. Many faces of skeletons and other scary parts of skeletons' bodies. As if there were actually souls in those dried bones. They were just dried bones, so she shouldn't be scared! Evan summoned back her courage. Her eyes swept to the other part of the wall and she saw writing on it. The wall looked brownish and dirty. Looking at the wall, she could tell it was made of bricks. It looked very old and one could tell this place was built hundreds of years back.
She got up on her feet, one hand holding the pendant and her other hand gripping the fabric over her knees. She went closer and closer, every step she took echoing in the silent room thanks to the shattered skeletons on the floor.
She went closer to her determined destination until the writing was clear in her view. She tried reading the writing, which read, “All of them are dead, you're next.” Her heart went rampant at those words. Her head spun with dizziness and she felt a weird feeling trying to consume her whole. She could barely stand and her knees gave way, sending her straight to the ground.
She heard a sharp, cricket-like voice behind her and immediately looked back to see a cricket-like creature. Its features were that of a cricket and its mouth was pointed and sharp. She noticed something else about the cricket. Its tail was long and exactly like a scorpion's.
Then it started transforming into a different kind of creature Evan couldn't predict. Something was wrong; she couldn't move an inch. It was like her body was glued to where she was sitting. Her eyes were unblinking, fixed on the mysterious creature. The creature not only transformed into a scary beast in human form with hands, it also grew bigger.
It attempted to attack Evan as it released a black liquid from its mouth. Unfortunately, before the liquid could get to Evan, it splattered on the bony floor.
The creature looked displeased by what happened. Why did it suddenly fall when he struck at such speed?
Annoyed,he released it for the second time and it flew in the air like a jet, but when it was about to touch Evan, it all weakened in speed and fell on the ground powerless.
“Ough!! How dare you!” the creature screamed as it ran towards her, this time determined to destroy her with his bare hands.
But…
Before it could get to her,it slowly faded into dust in the air. The dust flew in the air and slowly fell on the ground eventually.
Then Evan blinked. Her eyes finally began moving again. She placed one hand on the bony floor and struggled to stand up, panting heavily due to the traumatic experience she just had. As soon as she was able to stand up straight, a part of the wall vibrated rapidly. The sound was frightening, like an earthquake. That area of the wall slid into a door and the wall rolled aside. Ezekiel stepped in, his black hair messy. He wore nightwear and one of his hands was inside his trousers.
His face still looked like a walking corpse, completely unpredictable and expressionless. His elegant lips moved, muttering the word.
“Come.”He immediately stepped out after that. Not wanting to dwell in a room filled with bones, she hurriedly followed his trail. At least there was hope of not dying in here.
They passed through walls upon walls before getting out of the underground dungeon. This dungeon was usually used to hold any disobedient fellow or any black witch. It was built by the late lord Malcolm Donovan.
They went through a portal; Evan didn't know it was a portal as they both entered the room through an old metallic door. She only realized it when the door actually led to Ezekiel's room. However, she didn't dare to ask him any questions. His face was as blank as a black sheet of paper, not even flickering his eyelashes.
“Go to your room.” The words left his lips like a sharp blade piercing through the air. It made her heart jump up a bit. Without wasting much time, she ran out of the room.
She went to the servants' public bathroom and washed up before coming into her room. She noticed everywhere was well kept. No more Mrs. Donovan and the blood stains on the floor were gone as well.
She wanted to change into something new when she heard the annoying rabbit.
“Evan! You're back! Hehe.” Irritated by the bunny's voice, she took the pillow on the bed and pressed it on the bunny's face.
“Ah! What are you doing? Take it off!” the bunny sneered. Making sure every part of the rabbit’s body was covered, she quickly undressed, changing into a new clean dress, but of course it was still a maid's attire. The dress almost touched her toes. It was a colorless, brownish dress. She took the dirty one and placed it into a basket where she normally kept dirty clothes. Then when she was done, she lifted the pillow off the bunny and placed it on the bed.
“Hmm, what are you trying to do? You want to strangle me with that pillow?” asked the bunny. She could imagine his expression if he was in his human form.
“I wanted to change, is that so bad?” she asked. “And can you even breathe through that bunny body?” A chuckle left her elegant lips and the bunny's eyes immediately landed on them.
Now that I see her well, I think she's really pretty, the bunny thought to himself. Should I ask her to be my lady? Uhh, if only she didn't have her eyes on that duke she would've been mine. But why didn't I notice her beauty all this while? I would've made a move before the duke did.
The bunny started regretting how he treated her in the past.If he had known, he would've asked her for tea or something. After all, ladies love that.
A sharp sound pierced through the entire Donovan mansion, luring all servants and family members into the sitting room. As soon as Evan heard it, she threw her body weakly on the bed.
“What is it this time?” she mumbled slowly. Because the bunny is also a rabbit, he was able to hear her whisper.
“Take me along with you; let me hear what is about to happen.”
“No!”
Evan immediately rejected. She knew how this bunny could get.
“I'll explain what happened;it's better you stay here,” she promised as she got up from the bed intently.
“You won't.If you're truly genuine, tell me where you've been all day.” The bunny was displeased by her disloyalty.
“In the dungeon,”the word came out of her mouth as she walked up to the door and slid out of it, slamming it behind her and leaving the housekeeper dumbfounded.
…
Evan was the last to be in the sitting room. All maids sat on the cold floor. All the family members were seated as usual. There weren't many. It was just Ezekiel's three cousins who love sticking around, his troublesome Aunty, and her three little daughters.
“The reason why I've called this meeting this early morning is because…” Ezekiel began.
“There will be new rules for all the maids.”
