CHAPTER 44
**SOPHIA**
I look at my hand and see that I’m still holding the special dagger, the only weapon that can kill the prince.
The blade, cold and deadly, feels heavier than before, as if the fate of everyone is somehow tied to it. I can't help but think that I might have to use it, not just to protect myself, but to protect those I love.
My gaze shifts from the dagger to Adam, who is approaching me.
He’s serious, his eyes fixed on the weapon in my hand.
Without saying a word, he takes the dagger from me and kneels before me.
His movements are quick and precise, and before I realize it, he pushes my body against the wall. The sudden contact makes me gasp in surprise, my heart racing even faster.
"What are you doing?", I ask, my voice low and filled with confusion.
Adam's hands begin to move up my clothing, and a shiver runs through my body.
I try to focus on what’s happening around us—the screams and the sound of swords in the corridors, but it’s impossible to ignore his touch.
His hands move up my legs, and I bite my lip, trying not to give in to the growing desire and uncertainty within me.
When he finally looks at me, his expression is serious, but there’s something else—something I can’t fully decipher.
"You need to hide this. This dagger is a unique weapon, and you’ll be at risk if anyone finds it.", he whispers, his voice deep, as he fastens the dagger to the long stocking I’m wearing on my thigh. I feel the cold metal against my skin, a constant reminder of the danger surrounding us.
Adam stands up, his eyes never leaving mine, and moves closer, the space between us shrinking.
"What...", I try to ask, but my voice fails.
Before I can say anything else, even louder screams echo down the hallway, interrupting my thoughts.
Adam reacts quickly, placing a firm hand over my mouth and silencing any sound I might make.
I blink, and it’s the only response I can manage.
I feel my body tremble under his touch, and fear mixes with the adrenaline rushing through my veins.
The signal for silence he makes with his other hand makes me nod in agreement, trying to calm my nerves.
He pulls away, but the tension on his face tells me that the situation is far from under control.
Adam approaches the door, his movements cautious and silent.
I remain quiet, watching as he listens carefully to what’s happening on the other side.
The sounds of people banging on the door, trying to get in, feel like hammer blows against my already fragile peace. Every knock seems like a warning, a sign that our time is running out.
"Adam...", I whisper, the word barely escaping my lips.
The fear is clear in my voice, and he notices.
He turns his head toward me and shakes it, a firm gesture telling me he won’t let anything happen to me. But despite his intentions, the uncertainty of what’s coming consumes me.
"I won’t let anything happen to you, Sophia.", his voice is calm, but determined, as if his own life depended on my safety.
I know Adam is sincere and that he would do anything to protect me, but the circumstances are dire.
The castle is under attack, and the uncertainty of what will happen next hangs over us like a heavy shadow. I try to take a deep breath, but the thick air and the smell of smoke make it difficult.
The sounds outside the door grow louder.
It’s impossible to tell how many are trying to break in, but the panic I feel increases with every passing second.
I can’t help but think of my mother in the human village. If the vampires fight and kill the humans, what will happen to her?
I can’t lose hope that she’s safe, but the reality of the situation feels overwhelming.
As Adam holds his position near the door, listening to the noises, I look at the dagger strapped to my thigh.
Its weight now seems more symbolic, as if it represents all the difficult decisions I’ll have to make in the coming hours. I’m safe here, at least for now, but for how long?
The minutes drag on like hours.
The noise outside doesn’t lessen, and the sound of swords clashing, battle cries, and the heavy footsteps of guards fills my ears.
Adam remains steady, but I can see the tension in his shoulders and the way he’s ready for any eventuality. Time seems to stretch, and each beat of my heart is accompanied by a knock on the door, as if both were synchronized in a macabre dance.
Finally, Adam turns to me, his eyes filled with a determination that comforts me. He walks toward me, and for a moment, the outside world seems to fade away.
It’s just the two of us, trapped in this room, trying to find a way to survive the chaos unfolding outside.
"We need to be ready for anything, Sophia. I don’t know how long we have until this door gives way. But if that happens, you need to be prepared.", he says, his voice low but firm.
I nod, feeling the truth in his words.
I’m scared, but I know I can’t let fear paralyze me. The dagger strapped to my thigh is a constant reminder that, if necessary, I’ll have to fight.
"I trust you, Adam. I’ll do whatever it takes."
My voice is stronger than I expected, and I see a brief smile of relief cross his face.
He touches my arm lightly, a gesture that conveys more than words could.
It’s a silent promise that he’ll be by my side, no matter what happens. I take a deep breath, trying to find the courage I need to face whatever comes next.
The noise outside grows more intense, and I can feel the tension building inside me. Adam returns to the door, his posture rigid as he prepares for whatever might happen.
I shift a little, adjusting the dagger on my thigh and making sure it’s ready to be used if needed.
The next few hours will be crucial, and everything depends on the decisions we make.
We’re at a disadvantage, but we’re not defeated.
The fear is still there, pulsing like a constant ache, but now it’s accompanied by a growing determination.
We can’t let them break in, and if they do, we have to be ready to fight.
Adam looks at me one last time, his eyes meeting mine.
"Remember, Sophia, no matter what happens, I’m here with you. Don’t let fear consume you."
I nod, feeling the strength of his words.
I’m not alone, and that makes all the difference.
