Chapter Sixty-Seven

Waverly.

Everyone left but Barbie and Alistair.

It felt like a breath of fresh air for the camp to be empty with no threat of her death. Waverly sat down on the couch and leaned her head backward, resting her eyes. It felt like forever since she felt safe enough to relax.

Feeling Drake’s unease, his fear, it’d drove her insane. The inability to save him was the worst.

Not being able to get to him, or send help in the right direction scared her. It brought tears to her eyes. She silently tried to reach out to him but had no idea what she was doing.

All of this was new to her. Being someone’s mate wasn’t something she was in tune with. There was nowhere to go to find information about speaking to your mate, through your mind, while you’re human.

It was a useless battle that she knew she couldn’t win. Google wouldn't have any solutions she was sure.

Sarah sat down beside her and rested her head on Waverly’s shoulder. “I feel so nervous and relieved all at once,” she whispered. “Roderick is alive, but now we don’t know what’s going on and if they’ll be safe until the rest of the pack gets there. I think I'm going to have a heart attack before thirty."

Waverly nodded. “Yeah, I know what you mean. I've had a stress headache for hours."

“How did it feel to hear his voice inside your head? Creepy?” Sarah asked.

Waverly smiled and looked at Sarah once she sat up beside her. “It was reassuring to know he was okay, odd that he was inside of my head, but I liked it. I like that we have that bond, ya know?”

Sarah frowned playfully. “No, not really. My mate doesn’t even like the sight of me. I wouldn't know."

Waverly shoved her shoulder. “He’ll come around. I bet when he gets back everything will fall into place. If being kidnapped doesn’t wake his ass up, though, nothing will.”

She chuckled. “You’re right. Fingers crossed it knocked some sense into him."

Waverly looked at the front window of the living room. Barbie and Alistair both stood on the porch in one another’s arms.

“I wonder if Barbie will go stay at the pack house with him? They have pack houses, don’t they?” Sarah asked.

“I think so,” Waverly said. “At least the novels call it a packed house. And you know romance novels always get it right."

She chuckled. “I hope he makes her happier than her lame husband. Not trying to talk about the dead, but eww.”

Waverly laughed. “You’re right. Ew.”

Waverly stood up suddenly. “I need some water. That sandwich has my mouth drier than the Sahara.”

She walked into the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water, downing it in one gulp. She hadn’t realized how thirsty she was until that moment.

Waverly leaned her elbows against the kitchen island, thinking about her parents and how close they were to telling them the truth when a heavy pressure hit her chest.

She stumbled backward, thinking she’d have another message from Drake when she fell to all fours.

“Waverly?” Sarah asked, standing up. “Waverly? Waverly!” she shouted, her hurried footsteps neared Waverly.

She raced into the room and dropped to her knees beside her.

Waverly felt darkness begin to take over her body. She grabbed at Sarah’s clothes in fear, hearing the cabin door open and shut. Sarah cradled her to her thighs and held her tightly.

“Waverly!” Barbie shouted. “Hang on, you’re going to be fine.”

But everything went black before she had time to believe her.

Waverly felt fear in the deepest form residing inside of her. She was in a field, watching vampires and hellhounds fight. Was this happening now? She couldn’t understand. Where was she? Why was she here? When a rabid vampire jumped clear through her she knew she was watching this from afar.

Wherever she'd landed it wasn't in her body. It was in her mind.

The redhead descending the small hill toward them churned her stomach. Nicole was behind whatever this was, and Waverly was grateful that she couldn’t see her.

Through the madness, she saw Roderick and Drake, back-to-back, fighting vampires and hellhounds like their lives depended on it. Which it looked like they did.

The laughter in their voices confused her. Why would they be happy fighting all these things? Where were they? She remembered them mentioning seeing an abandoned camp in their search for Roderick. Is that where they were? Did the wolves know to go there? She assumed they would track them there, but how long would it take?

Were werewolves or vampires faster? She didn't know.

Had Nicole put them there? How far off were the rest of the camp? The numbers didn’t add up. They wouldn’t be able to fight them off and win. Nicole walked slowly toward them, weaving through the hellhounds and vampires fighting one another to get to Drake and Roderick.

The smile on her face brightened when she noticed the hellhounds biting at Drake’s legs. Someone needed to help them.

Where was everyone? They couldn't make it that much longer.

Waverly raced over and attempted to kick and scream at Nicole. She was circling the boys like vultures. The happiness on her face after her father died, and seeing the pain inflicted on Drake and Roderick was evil.

There was no other way to explain it. She had been plucked from Hell with those stupid dogs.

Waverly tried to reach out to Drake, but nothing worked. Tears built in the corners of her eyes. She walked over to Drake and touched his cheek.

The way he stalled, his gaze settled over her, seeing through her, but knowing she was there startled her. “Drake,” she whispered. “Hang on, help it coming.”

He must think the attempt to get to her didn’t work. He swallowed but continued fighting, kicking one of the hellhounds over Nicole’s head with ease.

Nicole stopped her stalking and placed her hands behind her back. Waverly wanted to reach out and claw her eyes from her head.

She looked eviler than the dinner, but Waverly would never forget her entitlement. It shouldn’t have pissed her off so much that day but it did. Nicole was more wild than a rabid vampire.

Roderick laughed at her while prying a vampire off his throat. Nicole seemed unphased, her gaze on Drake, because he was the problem. He stood up for Waverly that day. He saved her.

She felt useless not saving him in return. Waverly cried like a baby as a hellhound bit Drake’s neck. Nicole’s smile widened when she noticed them. The camp. Reid raced straight for Nicole, and before she realized her death was on its way, he kicked her head clear off her body.

Waverly’s excitement at someone’s death was not nice, but she couldn’t help it. The wolves and vampires began to pry the hounds to pieces, and they took turns killing the rabid vampires.

Waverly gasped for air, sitting up on the kitchen floor, she looked at the three of them all sitting around her. Sarah wrapped her arms around Waverly’s shoulder, and Barbie cradled her face.

“Are you okay?” Sarah asked. “Do you need some chocolate?”

Waverly laughed. “I didn’t faint, Sarah. I had a vision.”

Barbie looked at her in shock. “What of?”

“The boys. I think … I think they made it in time. Nicole lured Drake there with Roderick. They’re safe.”

Barbie leaned back against Alistair’s chest, and Sarah held her tight. Waverly cried into Sarah’s shoulder like a baby. They were safe.

They all were.

Waverly sat back and wiped her eyes.

Sarah laughed. “Now, why in the hell are you having visions? What aren't you telling me?"

Waverly gave her a look. "At this point do you think I would keep secrets, Sarah? Honestly."
