91. LORD BLACKWOOD (POV)
Elijah releases me abruptly, shifting his focus from a defeated adversary to another still standing. His gaze is pure malice as he advances towards Nyra. I feel a mixture of panic and anger, but before I can react, a clear and firm voice resonates in my mind. It's Anna.
"Alaric, listen," her voice echoes telepathically, urgent and clear. "I did it. The bond between you and Elijah is broken. I used the blood from his necklace and Nyra's blood. The blood you gave her further strengthened the connection between you two. It gave us the power to free you."
For a moment, I'm stunned by the revelation, a mix of relief and disbelief flooding over me. Elijah doesn't notice the interruption, his attention fixed on Nyra, who is regaining her composure, ready for the confrontation.
Propelled by Anna's news and the imminent danger to Nyra, my determination is renewed. I rise swiftly, feeling a new wave of strength coursing through me. The freedom from the bond seems to have unlocked something within me, a strength I didn't know I possessed. I rush towards Elijah, ready to protect Nyra with all I have.
Elijah, surprised by my sudden recovery, hesitates. I seize this moment, attacking him with renewed fury. He tries to counter, but the disruption in his concentration has given me the necessary advantage. Our combat is violent and desperate, each move laden with decades of betrayal and resentment.
"You've lost, Elijah," I say between blows. "Your control over me is over. I'm no longer your puppet."
He grunts, shaking his head. "You will always be mine, Alaric. You cannot change what you are."
But he's wrong. I have already changed. The breaking of the bond wasn't just an act of freedom; it was redemption. I fight with all I have, not just for my own freedom, but for Nyra, for Anna, and for all the lives Elijah has threatened.
As we struggle, I see Nyra joining Anna to check on her. I turn my attention back to Elijah, who tries relentlessly to manipulate me. But his eyes betray what I've always longed to see: desperation.
I notice a significant shift in Elijah as our combat intensifies. He is visibly weaker, his once agile and deadly movements now slow and hesitant. An ironic smile plays on my lips as I face him, my heart pounding with a mix of adrenaline and triumph.
"Elijah, you look different," I taunt, blocking another of his clumsy attacks. "What's wrong? Lost your powers to your legitimate daughter?"
Elijah's face twists in rage, the truth of my words hitting him deeply. He recoils, clearly shaken by the loss of his magic, a weapon he has always used as his primary form of control and power.
At that exact moment, the magical barrier preventing the guards from entering the sanctuary dissipates. I hear hurried footsteps behind me, and as I turn, I see Zion entering, his gaze immediately seeking and finding Nyra beside Anna. The concern on his face is evident, and his relief at seeing them safe is palpable.
The discomfort hits me like a blow, Zion's presence and his evident bond with Nyra momentarily distracting me. It's a fraction of a second of hesitation, but it's all Elijah needs. With surprising swiftness for his weakened state, he seizes upon my distraction and breaks free, pushing me forcefully backward.
I fall to the ground, surprised and frustrated with myself for letting personal feelings interfere at such a critical moment. I quickly regain my composure and rise to my feet, facing Elijah, who now regains some of his menacing posture.
"Don't think this changes anything, Elijah," I say, my voice firm, trying to conceal the whirlwind of emotions within me. "We're still going to end this, now."
Nyra and Anna join me, while Zion positions himself a bit apart, his gaze still concerned but respectful of the situation. Together, we form a united front, ready for the final stage of this battle.
Elijah watches us, a calculating gleam passing through his eyes. "So, his presence bothers you, doesn't it? Maybe I can easily put an end to that," he challenges, darting towards Zion.
He grabs Zion's head, looking at me with total attention, and a grim smile spreads across his face, making it clear that he can do as he pleases.
"I'll end your discomfort, since she took from me what I always desired, power." Elijah twists Zion's head so quickly that I only notice his body falling to the ground, drawing Nyra's attention, echoing a cry of pain from her lips.
Nyra runs towards Zion, her eyes filled with horror and desperation, while I remain momentarily paralyzed, the brutality of Elijah's action cutting deeply. The air becomes charged with Nyra's acute pain and the suffocating silence that follows the cruel act.
Elijah smiles, that cold, lifeless smile I know so well. "Alaric, always so predictable. Let's see if you can keep that promise." He prepares for the confrontation, clearly unrepentant for the horrendous act he has just committed.
Anna, who had remained more subdued until then, screams in anger and sadness beside Nyra, trying to comfort her while looking at Elijah with a hatred I had never seen before. She stands up, her posture changing, a dark determination taking shape. "We won't let this go unpunished," she says, joining me with renewed energy.
Nyra, although clearly shaken, quickly wipes away her tears and rises, grief transforming into a rage that seems to fuel her soul. She looks at Elijah with a disdain that rivals his own. "This ends now, Elijah," she says, her voice steady despite the obvious pain.
As Nyra advances with glacial determination in her eyes, I am immobilized by shock and admiration. Every step she takes toward Elijah is laden with unbreakable resolve. The silence that envelops us is heavy, marked only by the sound of her controlled breathing.
She crouches beside Elijah, who tries in vain to defend himself. With ruthless precision, she grasps his head, forcing him to look her in the eyes. "This ends now," she whispers. Before I can process her intentions, her hands plunge into Elijah's chest. With a cry that sounds more like a battle roar, she tears out his heart, holding it before her.
Frozen, I watch the scene, perplexed and horrified by the brutality of the act. Her eyes, now a deep red, reflect a darkness I have never seen before. She looks at the heart with a grim intensity, an expression that makes me fear what this fight has cost her.
"He will never hurt anyone again," Nyra says, her voice unwavering despite the weight of her words. Slowly, I approach, placing my hand on her shoulder with hesitation.
"Nyra, you did what had to be done," I affirm, trying to believe my own words. "But we must be careful not to become what we fight to destroy."
She turns to me, her eyes beginning to lose their intense redness, returning to normal. A sign that there is still hope, that the Nyra I know and love is still there. "I know," she responds softly, releasing the heart, which falls to the ground with a dull thud.
Anna joins us, her embrace tight around Nyra, filled with relief and love. "Let's go home," Anna says gently. "Let's heal and rebuild." Nyra nods, allowing herself to be guided by us as we leave behind the sanctuary and the remnants of the battle.
As we walk through the forest, the sunlight begins to pierce through the treetops, casting long, dancing shadows on the leaf-covered ground. The sound of our footsteps is muffled by the soft earth, and the fresh air brings some relief after the weight of the battle.
Nyra walks beside me, silently, lost in thought. The tension in her shoulders tells me that, despite her apparent calm, the fight has left deep marks. I can't help but worry about her, about the burden she now carries.
"Are you okay?" I ask, my voice low, almost hesitant. I know it's a simple question, but laden with meaning after everything we've been through.
Nyra looks at me, her clear eyes reflecting the complexity of her emotions. "I will be," she responds softly. "I just need time to forget all this, to process and let go."
Anna, walking on the other side of Nyra, gives her an encouraging smile and squeezes her hand. "We'll help you through this," Anna says, her determination clear. "We'll overcome this together."
As we continue our journey back to the castle, I ponder over Nyra's words and what the future holds for us. The victory over Elijah wasn't just the end of his tyranny; it was also the beginning of a new era for us, a chance to rebuild and heal.
The castle comes into view, imposing and welcoming, and I feel a wave of relief at the thought of returning home. Though I know the road ahead will be difficult and filled with challenges, I also know that we have each other. Together, we are stronger than we've ever been, and together, we will face whatever comes our way.
As we cross the castle gate, I allow myself to feel a glimmer of optimism. With Nyra and Anna by my side, and with the certainty that our fight has brought about change, I believe we can find peace. There will still be difficult days, long nights, and shadows to confront, but now more than ever, I feel that we are ready to face anything and turn our home into a place of hope and renewal.
As we enter the courtyard, the guards greet us, and the servants come forward to welcome us. There's a respectful silence, an understanding that despite the victory, the cost was high. But there's also a sense of renewal in the air, a promise that from now on, we can begin to heal.
"Let's get you cleaned up, young lady." I hold her, and she just looks at me, her gaze lost. I lift her up, and she rests her head on my shoulder, breathing deeply.
"I could have saved him, couldn't I?" She murmurs, clearly shaken. I close my eyes with the discomfort settling in my chest, feeling her so vulnerable like this.
"Yes, you could have. But don't alter the course of things like Elijah did with me. You need peace in your heart, young lady." I kiss her forehead, walking her upstairs toward my room.
I think it's time to bid farewell to my castle, to live somewhere safer for us, to finally destroy this sanctuary once and for all.
