Chapter 73 Shifted Room

Chapter 73 Shifted Room
Aria shut the door with more force than she meant to. The sound echoed through the chamber. She was still warm from the argument in the council hall. Her palms tingled. The heat moved under her skin in small waves she could not settle.

Lucian stood near the window with his hands resting on the stone ledge. His shoulders were tense. He did not turn right away. Aria watched the way he breathed. Slow in. Slow out. It looked like he was holding back words.

She moved closer but stopped a few steps behind him. The room felt heavier than before. Not dramatic. Just the kind of heavy that comes when two people have gone through too much in one day.

Lucian finally looked over his shoulder. His eyes softened when he saw her but worry still lived there. Aria felt her chest tighten at that look. She hated being the reason for it.

He asked if she was hurt. His voice was steady but tired. She shook her head. She told him she was only angry. Not at him. At everything else. The council. The soldiers whispering. The strange pull in her body that kept changing.

Lucian stepped away from the window. He came to her and lifted her hand. He turned it in his grip like he was checking for burns even though he knew none were there. She let him. It felt strange to stand still like that after the fire inside her had been loud all day.

He said he saw her losing control for a moment in the council hall. Aria looked at the floor. She remembered the way the heat climbed her spine and how quickly she pulled it back. She told him she had it under control. Mostly. She expected him to challenge that but he did not.

Instead he cupped the side of her face with one hand. His thumb brushed under her eye. She leaned into it without thinking. He told her he did not care what the council thought. He only cared that she stayed herself. The simple way he said it hit her harder than any speech.

Aria stepped closer until their bodies touched. She rested her forehead on his chest. His arms came around her slowly like he was still afraid she would break. His breath moved through her hair. She closed her eyes. The warmth between them was quiet and real. No fire. No shadows. Just two people trying to find steady ground.

She told him the truth then. She said something inside her felt different. Like the fire was sitting closer to the surface. Like it was listening. Lucian’s hand tightened on her back. Not enough to alarm her. Enough to show he heard everything she was not saying.

He asked if the voice had returned. She hesitated but nodded. His jaw flexed. She felt it through his chest. He did not tell her to stop using her power. He did not tell her what he feared. He just held her a little tighter, and that said enough.

Aria pulled back and looked at him. His eyes searched her face like he was checking if she was still the same woman he woke up beside that morning. She let him look. She needed him to see she was still here.

He lifted her chin with his fingers. The movement was slow. Honest. He told her he trusted her. The words settled something inside her. Not fully. But enough.

She touched his cheek with her palm. His skin was cool. Shadow always lived close to him, even when he tried to hide it. She told him she trusted him too. She meant it.

Lucian leaned in and kissed her. It was soft and steady. Nothing rushed. Nothing burning. Just a kiss that reminded her why she was fighting as hard as she was. She held the back of his neck. He pulled her closer by the waist. Neither of them spoke when they parted. They did not need to.

Aria rested her head on his shoulder. They stood in the quiet for a long time. No dramatic air. No swelling emotions. Just the quiet of two people who had survived another day together.

When she finally pulled away, the heat in her body was calmer. Lucian brushed his knuckles along her arm. He told her they would handle the council and whatever came next. His voice was low and firm. Not confident. Just sure of his place beside her.

Aria nodded. She believed him. Maybe not about the war. Maybe not about the serpent. But she believed him about this room and this moment.

The fortress outside stayed loud and restless. Inside the chamber, it was only them trying to breathe through the cracks of everything closing in.
