Chapter 107 - Blessing In Disguise
Norman entered the room with a sense of relief. He saw his boss sitting up and looking much better than he had a few days ago. He approached the bed, a genuine smile spreading across his face.
"Boss, it's good to see you looking so well," Norman said, pulling up a chair beside Stefan's bed.
"Thanks, Norman. I'm feeling a lot better," Stefan replied, his voice stronger but still tinged with the exhaustion of recovery. "How's everything going on the outside?"
It was right on time for them to talk about things privately when Amber was talking to one of Stefan's doctors.
Norman's expression turned serious. "There's a lot to discuss, Mr. Morgan. Firstly, we've made some headway on the hacker front."
Stefan raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh? What did you find out?"
"The hacker goes by the name Axus," Norman explained. "She's incredibly discreet and only communicates through another hacker named Belle.
They have a very secure and secretive way of exchanging information."
Stefan nodded, a thoughtful look crossing his face. "I wanted to thank her personally, but that won't happen."
Norman shook his head. "No, unfortunately not. But Axus has been instrumental in helping us get closer to finding justice for our parents. That's what matters most."
Stefan sighed, leaning back against his pillows. "Yes, it is. As long as we get justice, that's enough for me."
Norman hesitated for a moment, then continued. "There's something else, though. We still haven't found any information about Andrew. He's been incredibly elusive."
Stefan's expression hardened. "I was hoping for more progress on that front."
"I know," Norman said, his voice heavy with regret. "But we've managed to set up a meeting with David, just as you instructed."
Stefan's jaw tightened. "David… We need to handle this carefully. He's ambitious and cunning, and I'm sure he knows more than he's letting on. He's trying to compete against me; let us see what he's got." He had calculated ways to make David stop going after his wife.
Norman nodded. "We'll be prepared. I've already briefed the team on what to expect."
Stefan's eyes glinted with determination. "Good. We need to stay ahead of this. Every piece of information is crucial." Stefan's face softened, and he gave Norman a grateful nod. "Thank you, Norman. I appreciate everything you're doing."
Thankfully, the doctors had allowed Stefan to check out of the hospital and continue his healing at home. Chase was already standing on the steps as the car pulled up to the front of the mansion. His face lit up with a massive smile as he saw Stefan and Amber step out. He dashed down to greet them, his eyes wide with concern and relief.
"Aunt Amber! Uncle Stefan!" Chase exclaimed, rushing to give them both a gentle hug. He stepped back, his young eyes scanning them carefully. Amber's loose pants and sweater meant to hide her bruises, but she didn't escape his notice or Stefan's cast.
"Are you both okay?"
Amber knelt at Chase's level, brushing a stray hair from his forehead and offering him a reassuring smile. "We're fine, sweetheart. Just a little knocked up, but nothing we can't handle."
Chase's brow furrowed with worry. "I was so scared when I heard you were in the hospital."
Stefan gently touched Chase's shoulder, giving it a comforting squeeze. "We're tough, Chase. And we had a lot of people looking out for us."
The maids, who had been anxiously waiting inside, quickly gathered around the entrance, their faces a mix of relief and joy. They welcomed Stefan and Amber warmly, their care and concern evident in their eyes.
"Welcome home, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan," one of the maids said softly, her voice trembling with emotion. "We're so glad you're both safe."
It was heart-warming for Amber to be called Mrs. Morgan, especially the Morgan family's servants. They had treated her with high regard since they moved into the mansion.
"Thank you," Stefan replied, his voice sincere. "We appreciate everything you've done for us and caring for Chase while we're away."
Chase tugged at Amber's sleeve, his eyes wide with curiosity and lingering worry. "Can I help with anything, Aunt Amber? Maybe get you some tea or a blanket?"
Amber's heart melted at his concern. She cupped his face gently in her hands. "You're such a sweet boy, Chase. How about you help me get settled in the living room, and we can watch a movie together?"
Chase's face brightened. "Okay! I'll make sure you're comfortable."
Stefan watched the interaction, his heart swelling with gratitude and love for Amber and Chase. Despite the pain and trauma they had been through, moments like these reminded him of what truly mattered.
As they made their way to the living room, the maids bustled around them, bringing extra pillows, blankets, and a tray with tea and snacks. The atmosphere in the house was warm and nurturing, a stark contrast to the tension and fear of the past few days.
Settling onto the couch, Amber winced slightly as she adjusted her position, trying to hide her discomfort due to her bruises from Chase. Stefan noticed, his eyes narrowing with concern.
"Are you sure you're okay, Amber?" he asked softly, his voice filled with worry.
She nodded, giving him a reassuring smile. "I'm fine. Just need a little rest."
Chase snuggled up next to her, his small hand clutching hers. "I'm glad you're home," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Amber kissed the top of his head. "Me too, Chase. Me too."
Stefan sat beside them, wrapping his uninjured arm around both of them. "We're a team, right? We'll get through anything as long as we stick together."
Chase nodded, his eyes shining with determination. "Yeah, we're the best team."
Amber felt a surge of emotion as she looked at the two most influential people in her life. Despite the pain she went through in Katrina's hands, everything was worth it and served as a blessing in disguise.
Stefan and Amber were alone in their room as the evening settled in. The quietness of the house was comforting, a stark contrast to the chaos they had endured. Stefan shifted uncomfortably in his clothes, his cast making it difficult to move freely.
"Amber," Stefan called softly, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Could you help me change? This cast is a real pain."
Amber looked up from her spot on the other bed, where she had been trying to relax. She felt nervous about helping him, her heart pounding slightly. "Of course," she replied, her voice steady despite her fluttering nerves.
Stefan smirked, sensing her discomfort. "Don't worry, I promise to behave," he teased, his eyes twinkling.
Amber rolled her eyes playfully, though her cheeks flushed. "You better," she muttered, moving to help him. She carefully unbuttoned his shirt, her fingers brushing against his skin, sending a jolt through them.
As she worked, Stefan's eyes never left her face. "You know, baby," he began, his tone softening, "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Amber glanced up, her heart swelling at his words. "Stefan, you saved my life. This is just a fraction of what you've sacrificed for me. And besides, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
Stefan's hand, not in a cast, reached up to gently caress her cheek. "I know, but still... thank you." His eyes searched hers, a depth of emotion swirling within them.
Amber swallowed hard, feeling the intensity of his gaze. She removed his shirt and reached for a fresh one, trying to steady her hands. As she helped him into it, Stefan couldn't resist leaning in, his breath warm against her ear.
"You know," he murmured, his voice low and teasing, "you could help me fall asleep tonight. It might be the best sleep I've had in a while."
Amber's blush deepened, and her mind raced. She knew he was flirting, but his tone had an undercurrent of genuine need. "Stefan, you're still healing," she reminded him, trying to keep her voice light. We should take it easy."
Stefan chuckled, a rich, warm sound that sent shivers down her spine. "I promise to be good," he said, a playful glint in his eyes. "But having you close... it helps."
Amber finished buttoning his shirt and stepped back, her heart pounding. She could see the genuine affection and longing in his eyes, and it took all her willpower not to give in completely. "Alright," she agreed softly, a small smile on her lips. "I'll stay with you."
Initially, they had agreed to sleep in separate beds to allow Stefan's chest to heal continuously. But Stefan knew it was too much of a precaution, and he could sleep with Amber on the other side of the bed.
Stefan's face lit up with a satisfied grin. "Good," he said, pulling her close with his uninjured arm. "Because I can't imagine falling asleep without you by my side." Amber's heart became erratic, and she blushed even more.
They settled into bed, Amber careful not to jostle his cast. As they lay together, Stefan's arm around her, she felt a sense of peace. Despite everything, they were here together, which mattered most.
Stefan nuzzled her hair, his voice a gentle whisper in the darkness. "Goodnight, wifey."
"Goodnight, hubby," she replied, her heart full as she closed her eyes.
