Chapter 53 RUTHLESS MOVE
Chapter 53 RUTHLESS MOVE
“She’s dismantling us piece by piece,” Ethan said quietly. “They’ve opened legal probes, leaked shell company exposures, media’s spinning everything in her favor.”
Ricky ran a hand over his face, jaw tight. “She’s not just surviving—she’s hunting. And I can’t stop her. Every action I take only confirms her strategy.”
He looked at Tessa, sitting silently beside him. “She’s not naive. She knows exactly what she’s doing. And I… I have to figure out how to respond without making it worse.”
“Use her emotions,” Tessa said quietly, “she always had a soft spot for you, use it...”
By nightfall, Veritas’ legal and data teams had created a web of exposure around Mendez Group. Shell companies frozen. Accounts traced and frozen. Regulatory authorities alerted. Investors receiving private briefings.
Lara leaned back, exhausted but exhilarated. “This is beyond anything I expected. Helena tried to attack, and we turned it into a full-scale takedown.”
Sonia’s eyes, sharp and calculating, surveyed the room. “This is only the beginning. Every move from now on is a calculated push toward total dominance. We don’t destroy them physically—we destroy them publicly, financially, and legally. They’ll crumble, and we’ll be untouchable.”
Marcus, tapping on a tablet, nodded. “The probes are live. Shell companies being investigated. Investors getting the first leaks. Public opinion is already shifting in your favor.”
Sonia’s lips curled in satisfaction. “Let them panic. Let them scramble. Every law they break, every secret they hide—it’s going to come out. And when it does… there will be no sanctuary for them. They’ll remember the name Sonia Verma… and the ghost of Sonia Iris.”
Greg watched the city glow beneath him, the chaos rolling across news screens, social media, and legal filings. Sonia’s plan was ruthless, brilliant, unstoppable.
“She’s alive,” he whispered. “She’s not the same girl from Crestwood. She’s everything she needed to be to survive… and more. And she’s not alone. She has us—her team, her intelligence, her vengeance will be complete with us watching, and holding. They won’t know what hit them.”
A notification popped on his screen: first shell company probe completed, initial public reactions positive toward Sonia, Mendez Group scrambling.
He sent a reply: “continue monitoring.”
Greg smiled faintly. The war has begun. And I’m staying in the shadows, making sure she reaches the end.
Richard Mendez sat in a room designed to make men feel small.
Mahogany walls. Frosted glass. A single painting—abstract, violent reds and blacks—that Ricky had hated as a child.
Richard steepled his fingers. “So, the Banks boy, Greg finally decided to play.”
Helena sat across from him, legs crossed, expression tight. “Greg leaks breadcrumbs. Sonia causes earthquakes. It’s coordinated.”
“No,” Richard said calmly. “It’s arrogance.”
He tapped the table once. “And arrogance invites traps.”
Helena leaned forward. “What are you thinking?”
Richard smiled thinly. “We don’t attack her.”
Helena frowned. “She’s dismantling us.”
“We isolate her,” Richard corrected. “We make her doubt her allies. We force her to choose between power and conscience. We use Camila.”
Helena hesitated. “Camila—”
“—is leverage,” Richard finished. “And leverage doesn’t need to be touched to be effective.”
Helena’s jaw tightened. “She’s, my daughter, adopted or not.”
“She’s a liability,” Richard replied coolly. “Decide which matters more.”
"You act now like you care, but you and i know that you don’t. Didn't you join Tessa all those years ago to orchestrate her kidnap to force Ricky’s hand? You did it because you did not want any one being in the way of your plans for the Clarke's family collaboration which centered on a marriage alliance. A plan you had years ago. You adopted her to keep Ricky company, when the doctors said you can't afford to risk getting pregnant again due to complications that arose during delivery. So stop acting like you care now." He said in a dangerously calm voice.
Camila lay awake in bed, staring at the ceiling as Helena’s words replayed in her mind.
"You were chosen. Saved. Given a life. Adopted into this family, and now this family needs your help. Help us deal with Sonia, she seems to still care about you, given that you were great friends then." Her mother had said.
"And Sonia would take it all away. She was your friend, but she is destroying your family. Not just your family, but other families too. Camila," she had said softly, "we really need you."
Camila squeezed her eyes shut.
She didn’t want to believe that.
Didn’t want to think of Sonia’s calm voice, lonely self, and hardened walls the last time they had spoken. The ease she had felt around her.
The clinic photo that her mother had sent her haunted her, the people who were put out of jobs, because of Sonia’s information release, suspended, unable to eat, helpless, because of her ruthless investigations, and financial probes.
So did her mother’s smile when she said, "help us end this."
Camila turned her face toward the window.
“I don’t know what to do,” she whispered.
No one answered.
