Chapter 75: Can You Believe This?
Chapter 75: Can You Believe This?
Nadine Black's POV:
Was this really happening? Did my father just speak up at my wedding in such a manner?
"Father?" I called out to him as he sat there the entire time on the other side of my mother, seeing how frustrated this was making him.
I couldn't believe that one text from someone I would consider to be a questionable individual would have caused so much stress and strain on the day I was to be married. Granted, I didn't expect this day to come, but now that it was here, I wasn't about to let anybody else ruin it for me.
That was precisely the last thing that I would ever want. I also didn't exactly know how Damian was going to take this either.
How would one be able to handle something such as this, knowing that my sister-in-law had put my brother in jail literally the day before I was wed? And now she sent a text message wanting a ride home from God knows where?
It was in that moment that my father stood up to his feet. I knew he was beyond frustrated. Hell, I didn't blame him. I was pissed. More than I thought I should have been, but who was I to say otherwise?
As I looked around, I still saw a wall of bodies that practically encapsulated our entire table. You had my father's trusted men, some of Damian's, and Andrew and Mathis. I couldn't forget them. If it wasn't for them... There's no telling what would've happened to me. They've had me concealed from a thing or two. I couldn't have been more pleased.
But in this particular moment, that'll all have to wait. I was beyond pissed about one simple thing. Kelly Anne. She was going to pay one way or another.
"Damian?" I asked as I turned to look at him, seeing my father had leaned forward and placed his hands on the front edge of the table. "Please tell me you're going to do something about this?"
Son," my father called as Damian had yet to respond to me when he turned to look at my father, Germaine. "I think it's time."
Damian didn't say anything in that moment, but he did stand up on his feet right along with my father. Damian placed his hand on the back of my chair, using that as support so he could stand from his previous kneeling position between my mother and me.
During this moment, both of us remained seated as my mother continued to sniffle about, using the handkerchief that my father had given her due to her frustrating situation.
"Mother, are you sure you are all right?" I asked as Damian and my father proceeded to have a whispered conversation above our heads.
"Oh my dear," my mother said, calling out to me. She reached over and took my hand in hers. "You need not worry about me."
"But you are my mother?" I questioned her as I attempted to pull my hand back, to which she tightened her grip, refusing to let go with her moment of sincerity.
"Oh please don't, Nadine," she called out as she held my hand and raised it up to meet her cheek. "Please don't pull away this time. I need to hold onto you for a moment longer. You are about to leave me. You are about to go and become an official woman. A married woman. If you will kindly allow me to hold your hand for a brief moment longer. You don't know how happy this moment makes me."
What did she say? This moment makes her happy? To see me married to my adopted brother, if that's how my family didn't want to look at it?! I was beyond shocked to hear her words as such.
That's when I lowered my gaze, seeing the look in my mother soften the look on her face. However, when she was no longer looking, as I watched her close her eyes, I rolled my eyes in the back of my head.
"All right," I said lightly as I leaned closer to her, so that she wasn't pulling my arm as far as she was previously.
Damian, on the other hand, who was standing right beside me, used that opportunity to walk around the back of my mother, still maintaining behind the wall of bodies. I watched as he stepped closer to my father.
My father looked at me with a serious expression on his face, all before he turned his attention to Damian. That's when they started to continue whatever conversation it was that they were trying to keep going, but this time, doing so in a hushed tone.
Who was I to care what men talked about in their hushed tones? I certainly didn't care. I only cared about me.
"I think that sounds like a splendid plan," I heard Damian finally say all at once as he turned around to look down at me from over his shoulder. That's when he called out to me, saying, "Nadine?"
I looked up at him and asked, "Hmmm? Yes, dear husband, what is it?"
I said it with as much sarcasm as I could muster in that single moment, knowing how my mother would feel about what I had just said. However, what I didn't exactly expect was my mother to open her eyes in such a manner and stare at me with all intensity. It was rather intense, all in that single brief moment, if I do say so myself.
"What?" I asked her with sheer innocence, even slightly raising my one free hand out to the sides a bit as I turned to face her more directly.
"Can you just be nice for one day, my dear?" My mother asked me in a hushed tone.
That's when my father decided to make his move. I watched as the wall of bodies moved slightly, allowing my father to walk around Damian in order to stand there directly behind my mother. He even went so far as to place his hands firmly on top of her shoulders.
Damian was still standing on the opposite side of my father at this moment as they were all looking down at me. I wasn't sure what to think about how my father, or my newlywed husband, was looking at me.
There was so much to process all in one day. How was I going to move on from this one moment? But one thing was perfectly clear. Kelly Anne was going to pay!
