Wary as an animal in enemy territory, Hoffers stood helplessly in front of his boss. He didn’t plan to do this , but he was going to do it anyways. Finally he had come to realize that even Kama was on my side otherwise he wondered how a Croesus who was declared broke could have enough money to be recognized once gain as the world richest man.
His boss beamed, “What is this, Hoffers Greenfield?”
In his hand was a white paper which was neatly folded. His boss furiously opened the paper once again as though the information in there was yet to sink in his head, “Why do you want to resign at this crucial time?” he lowered his gaze on the resignation letter once again before he raised his face to lock eyes with Hoffers who wasn’t ready to explain himself.
He snorted and writhed with the urge to shed tears. “Pardon me if my resignation came too impromptu. But I have decided to terminate my job with you, sir.” He winced thoughtfully as his gaze settled on his arms which fondled with the hem of his shirt.
“Can you please proffer meaningful explanation for this? His boss raised the resignation paper and shut his expectant gaze at him, “Why do you want to resign, considering the fact that Mike Don will be paying our restaurant visit soon? Weren’t you at the meeting when I broke the news to everyone?”
Hoffers shook his head and could barely keep his gaze straight to his boss. “I have decided to terminate my job so that I can recreate my newly found life in Georgia,” he lied and wished he could tell him that I was the reason he was terminating his newly found job
The boss raised a thick brow and let an eerie gloom becloud his face. Hoffers had barely started the job; he was just three weeks old in it and now he was resigning.
A strange calculative thought struck him in the head and he intoned, “Uh-oh perhaps I perceive it is because of the personality difference. You know you once told me you were the chairman of Hoffers Food until it was shut down by government .” his boss only suggested and supported it with an inimical smile which died off as soon as it came on his face.
Hoffers never for once whirled at the sound of his voice. His face was a bit blue and rigid and it was as if he had cautioned himself not to succumb to any form of negotiation with him.
He recoiled, “Like I said my purpose of resigning is to foster a new career in my home town, Georgia. I…I …” he stuttered as he regret leaving Rio Hondo because of me
This had been his plan earlier after he lost his restaurant. He had decided to vacate Rio Hondo because of the ridicule and shame he would be getting from me. A night before his departure, news of my decline in net worth hatched and spread as while fire. Hoffers found himself staying back in Rio to get a job at the restaurant so he could see me any day by chance and mock me. But now the table had turned.
His boss cut in, Hoffers what could be the problem? You seem to be stuttering. What are you hiding from me? Aren’t you supposed to be happy over the visit of the world richest man to our restaurant which would take place any time soon…”
Hoffers interrupted, “Uh-oh, come on such things don’t thrill me,” he prided and corked his eye brow at his beholder, “I was once a billionaire, even the world richest man was my delivery boy…” he prided.
He had barely finished his speech when his boss interrupted him with his speech which left him writhing in pain and embarrassment.
Still struggling to catch breath after failing to control the laugh, his boss sounded, “Come on, Hoffers how could you mention such irony, huh?”
His brow was furrowed, “Irony? What is ironical about Mike Don being my delivery boy at Hoffers Food. Why do you people doubt me each time I make such revelation? Who the hell is Mike Don anyways? Nobody seems to believe me each time I reveal that Mike Don was my delivery boy. I don’t know what you take me for?”
His boss had resumed the riotous laugh and struggling to come off it, “What you just said is not only ironical but blasphemy. Do you know who Mike Don is huh? How could you open your mouth and make such utterance about Mike Don. Perhaps the Mike Don who was once your delivery boy is not the world richest man himself.”
A deep shudder hit Hoffers and he sighed and swore under his breath. “Why do you people see Mike Don as some god of wealth, huh? None of you believe when I say I once paid Mike Don salary as my delivery boy…”
His boss beamed, “How do you expect us to believe you when Mike Don is superbly rich, huh? Right now Forbes is yet to ascertain his actual net worth because he is back with unlimited wealth. Mike Don is not just the god of wealth but the true heir to the Saint Don Group, the richest and one of the most admired oil and gas group…”
Hoffers shunned him, “You guys can go ahead and worship that maggot. I am out!” he opened his arms, “Can I have my salary?”
His boss grinned, pulled out his drawer and took out a sizeable envelope, “This is half payment.” He slapped the envelope on the desk, “I believe it can pay for fare to Georgia. Good bye Hoffers.”
He took it with reserved grin, opened the envelope to see the dollars before he turned his face to the door to leave. I can’t believe this is me. Mike Don has reduced me to nothing. But I rather disappear than see his horrible face again…” a voice spoke in his mind…
