Chapter 96 The Wrong Blood Type
"Aimée, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said anything. I'll go get Jack right away. Just hang tight," Alison said, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and regret for getting involved.
Great, now Aimée was livid.
Alison turned to leave, feeling a deep sense of regret.
"Stop!" Aimée's voice was icy and commanding, freezing Alison in her tracks.
"Don't bring up stuff like this again. I don't want to hear it," Aimée said, trying to steady herself. If she was really pregnant, she couldn't keep the baby because it wasn't Jack's. She couldn't let Jack find out, because if he and Isabella knew, she'd have no choice but to keep the baby.
"I get it," Alison said, puzzled by Aimée's sudden change in behavior. She lowered her head, thinking she must have said something wrong to upset Aimée. "If there's nothing else, I'll be going now." She had meant well, but now she just wanted to get away from the seemingly crazy Aimée, whose expression was truly frightening and completely unlike her usual composed self.
"Get out!" Aimée hissed, filled with anger. If only it had been Jack with her that night, she might already be carrying his child.
The more Aimée thought about it, the angrier she became, watching Alison's retreating figure with growing resentment.
Back at the table, Jack noticed Alison's pale face and was startled. "Alison, what's wrong?" She looked as white as a sheet, but it was Aimée who had seemed unwell earlier. Now Alison looked just as bad.
"Aidan, I'm not feeling well. Can you take me home?" Alison ignored Jack. Since Aimée had told her not to say anything, she wouldn't. It was between Jack and Aimée, and she didn't want to meddle anymore.
"Alison, where do you feel unwell? Let me take you to the hospital," Aidan said, already standing and rushing over, as if he could feel her discomfort himself.
Alison forced a weak smile. "It's nothing, just an old stomach issue. Let's go."
"Second brother, did my situation give you a headache too?" Jack asked with a grin, as if he had just remembered something.
"Don't talk nonsense," Aidan said, giving Jack a light punch. "Go check on Aimée. If she's really pregnant, you need to take responsibility and give the Rolland family an explanation. Stop being so aimless."
"You're so naggy, second brother."
"Just go already," Aidan said, pushing Jack towards Aimée and leading Alison out of the café.
Outside, the fresh air made Alison feel a bit better. She walked like a puppet towards Aidan's Volvo in the open-air parking lot, her mind still in turmoil.
"Aidan, did something happen just now?" Aidan asked, puzzled.
"Nothing, let's go. I might have overworked myself today," Alison replied.
Aidan gently touched her short hair. "I'll find you some help tomorrow. You'll get it done in three days, I promise."
"Thanks."
"But don't forget your check-up tomorrow morning. You're so weak right now, it's necessary."
"Got it," Alison replied lazily, still thinking about Aimée possibly being pregnant with Jack's child.
That child was already driving a wedge between her and Jack, making him more distant and unreachable.
Following Aidan's instructions, Alison spent the morning at the hospital for a check-up. It wasn't Monday, so the hospital was busy, but she managed to complete all the tests. Seeing the results, she was happy to find she was healthy, and this happiness helped her forget the gloom of the previous night.
Everything would just have to take its course.
Everyone had their own path to walk, and no one could control anyone else, right?
From now on, she could only watch Jack from afar.
Back at the office, Alison was still preoccupied with the unfinished project. As soon as she walked in, Manager McLean called her over. "Alison, the president wants you to bring the materials to the VIP room. Someone will help you with the budget calculations."
"Thanks, Manager," Alison said with a smile. It seemed Jack was true to his word. Otherwise, it would be hard to make up for the lost morning.
"You're welcome. The president values your abilities. This is a good thing. Do your best and don't let him down. Go on," the manager said.
She gathered the materials and headed to the VIP room, curious about who Aidan had found to help her. It was a good opportunity to learn from someone else, as a bit of shared experience could save her a lot of trouble.
In the VIP room, a man was facing away from the door, moving a mouse on the table. The computer screen showed the villa model she was estimating costs for.
Meanwhile, in the top-floor president's office, Aidan received a call from the hospital. "President, Miss Alison's blood type is AB."
His body went cold, and the phone slipped from his hand. No matter how much the person on the other end called out, he couldn't hear them. His mind was filled with the thought, "Alison's blood type is AB," but the bloodstains left by the woman that night were type O.
Alison, holding the materials and a USB drive, gently pushed open the door to the VIP room. She thought the person inside was someone Aidan had sent to help her, but when she saw who it was, she was as shocked as she had been the night before.
The carpet muffled her steps, so Jack, focused on the design, didn't notice her.
Alison quietly watched Jack's back. Even without seeing his face, she knew it was him. She would recognize him anywhere.
Her heart pounded.
Scenes from the previous night's madness flashed through her mind. If Aimée was pregnant, Jack would surely marry her.
She and Jack shouldn't have any more entanglements.
The Winston brothers were strange. Jack always pushed her towards Aidan, while Aidan kept bringing Jack to her.
She wanted to escape, to avoid getting tangled up with Jack again. It scared her, not knowing how to face him.
Alison turned to leave, hoping to slip away quietly, as if she had never been there.
But the materials in her hands betrayed her, falling to the floor with a loud crash as she touched the door.
"Who's there?" Jack turned instinctively at the sound, looking towards its source.
"Ah... Jack, it's me," she said, feeling foolish for not being able to avoid him.
"Alison? What are you doing here?" Jack asked, puzzled. It was work hours, and while he didn't mind Alison, he was always serious and focused at work.
It seemed she couldn't escape Jack.
Alison opened her mouth and said, "The president asked me to come to the VIP room. I'm working on the villa project's cost estimation. He said someone would help me, but maybe that person hasn't arrived yet, so I'll just go back." She glanced around nervously, still not believing Jack was the one supposed to help her, and prepared to leave.
Jack stood up, looking skeptical. "You're the procurement department employee handling the estimation?" He hadn't wanted to take on this project, but thinking about the future owner of the villa, he had accepted it, feeling it might be connected to past events. He wanted to seize this opportunity.
Otherwise, even if the chairman himself had asked, he wouldn't have returned to YD Company to help.
Alison nodded, then lowered her head, feeling uneasy. Jack walked over to her. "Don't just stand there. Pick it up, and let's get to work." He bent down to help her gather the materials from the carpet and the door.
"Jack, I can do it myself," she said, stepping back, not wanting to be too close to him. His presence was overwhelming, and being near him made her dizzy.
