Chapter 46 Sorrow
She couldn't face Jack directly; just hearing his voice made her heart race.
"So what if I am?" Aidan shot back at Jack, his look clearly saying, "Alison's with me."
"Too skinny, not interested. Lillian, grab the dress, we're outta here."
Thank goodness, Alison thought with relief. Otherwise, she would have been terrified.
She stayed silent, leaning against Aidan's chest as he zipped up the evening gown. Aidan picked her up and walked out, passing by Jack. Alison felt Jack's presence again.
Listening to her own heartbeat, Alison slowly closed her eyes, wanting to escape everything about Jack like an ostrich burying its head in the sand.
If she could forget, she would rather her memory be blank, so she wouldn't feel this pounding heartbeat.
The sound of her heartbeat, thumping away, made her heart tremble uncontrollably.
Why?
Why did Jack always make her so flustered?
She didn't want this.
Recalling the scenes in the woods, her body trembled even more.
The pain, that boundless pain, felt as if it had just happened.
Sophia and Ethan, she would never allow Jack to take them away from her.
They were her precious ones.
"Alison, does it hurt a lot?" Aidan had completely forgotten about her and Jack. Now, he was most concerned about her ankle injury.
"It's okay," she replied softly, biting her lip.
Her voice was so light, like in a dream, that it stirred something in Aidan's heart.
"Jack was right, you are too skinny. Holding you makes my arms hurt," Aidan said casually, making Alison laugh. This guy, besides being cunning and flirtatious, had a humor that was quite endearing.
"Your arms hurt? Then put me down, I can walk."
"No way." Aidan firmly placed her and the dress bag in the back seat.
He looked a bit like Jack.
After all, they were brothers, so it wasn't surprising.
Aidan closed the car door and looked at her biting her lip. For some reason, a familiar feeling surged in his heart.
But it quickly disappeared.
Alison quietly leaned in the car, glancing out the window, and saw Jack and Lillian walking out of Chanel hand in hand. Lillian was holding the bag with the evening gown she had just chosen.
The couple actually looked quite well-matched.
She should be happy for them.
But why couldn't he settle down and find a suitable wife? Always changing girlfriends, it was worrisome.
Aidan rolled down the window and said to Jack, "Don't forget what you promised me." Although he hadn't seen any issues with Alison Bruce today, Aidan was still not satisfied and planned to try again tomorrow.
"Got it, now go, don't let your food get cold." Jack's gaze went straight to Alison, making her shrink back involuntarily.
Actually, only Aidan's window was open.
Through the tinted glass, Jack couldn't see who was inside.
Even though Jack couldn't see her, Alison still felt flustered, her heart racing, and she curled up in the seat, trembling.
Aidan glanced back at her, thinking her ankle hurt, so he didn't think much of it. "Alison, sit tight, we're leaving."
The car pulled out of Chanel's temporary parking lot.
The rose-red Volvo quickly left the figures behind.
Alison's eyes fell on the rearview mirror.
In the mirror, Jack and Lillian were still there, but their hands had somehow let go.
She smiled wryly, thinking he was just going to get the car. Otherwise, why would he let go of his date's hand?
She watched the man getting into the car, silently praying: If you find true love, please cherish it.
And please be happy.
She closed her eyes, hiding her heavy heart.
Sadness flowed with the scenery outside the window. For the past three years, she couldn't help but show endless sorrow.
She wanted to forget, but the feelings were deeply rooted in her heart, impossible to erase.
The car soon arrived at YD's underground parking lot. When Aidan parked the car, Alison realized she was still wearing the bright orange evening gown. This outfit, though beautiful, was more suited for a party or a press conference, not YD's office building.
Aidan opened the door and extended his hand like a gentleman, his humor showing again. "Miss Fairchild, it's my honor to be your escort."
"Mr. President, I want to change out of this evening gown," she said softly, still not fond of Aidan.
"Change? No need, you look great in anything. Come on, I'll carry you to the office." Aidan said, ready to pick her up again.
"No, I want to try walking."
"No way, you haven't applied any medicine yet. You need to apply it and make sure it's okay before walking." Aidan frowned slightly, worried if Alison could attend tomorrow's press conference.
Alison really wanted to walk herself, but she knew walking now would arouse Aidan's suspicion. But letting Aidan carry her to the office was even worse. She knew being seen like that would make her the center of gossip.
After all, she was just a new employee.
"Come on, I'll carry you." But Aidan ignored her protests, already supporting her back and waist, not allowing her to refuse.
"Mr. President, how about you just help me to the elevator?" This was the only compromise she could think of, hoping Aidan would agree.
"Alison, you're too timid. I already carried you at Chanel, and now you want to avoid suspicion? Isn't it a bit late? Come on, I'll carry you up. I promise no one will say anything because your ankle is really injured."
Hearing Aidan's words, Alison blushed.
She wasn't really injured.
As she was feeling conflicted, Aidan had already carried her out of the car, closed the door with his elbow, locked the car with the remote, and strode towards the elevator.
"Mr. President, put me down," she called out, struggling and protesting Aidan's dominance since he carried her out of the car. But Aidan seemed not to hear or feel her struggles. Ignoring her shouts, flailing arms, and kicks, he quickly carried her into the elevator.
"Mr. President, please put me down," Alison's heart pounded, fearing the elevator doors would open and colleagues would flood in, making her a laughingstock.
Just her luck, escaping Jack's entanglement only to face Aidan's.
"Don't worry, this is a private elevator. No one will see. Now you can relax."
Alison had nothing to say, letting Aidan carry her into the office. Claire's eyes widened when she saw them.
"Mr. President, what happened to Miss Fairchild?"
"Only you and I know about her ankle injury. I don't want a third person to know, understood?" Aidan said sternly.
