Chapter 239: Heart-Wrenching
“Rock, let her go,” Jack said, still tormented by the truth.
“Jack, what the hell happened? Weren’t you supposed to protect her? How could you let Aimée’s car nearly kill Alison?” Rock’s accusation only deepened Jack’s guilt.
After meeting with the informant, Jack received a call about the incident and rushed to the hospital.
“Aimée’s in this state because of me,” Jack said hoarsely. “I’ll take responsibility.”
“How?” Alison snapped, her voice breaking. “Aimée’s in a coma, and Aidan’s still unconscious—how will you make this right?”
“Alison, calm down. I’ll take you to see Aidan.”
“Jack, the hallway’s crawling with Rolland men. You shouldn’t go out there,” Rock warned.
“I caused this,” Jack said quietly. “I’ll clean it up—and no one will touch Alison.”
“Jack… do you even know the truth about Aimée’s child?” Alison asked, trembling.
“What about it?” Jack asked, puzzled.
“That child isn’t yours, Jack—it’s Aidan’s.” The words burst out before she could stop them. Relief flooded her chest the instant they left her lips.
A flash of disbelief—and then relief—crossed Jack’s eyes. “Is that true?”
Alison nodded firmly. “Yes. She admitted it—Aidan knows too. That’s why she lost control and tried to run me down. If the Rollands come after us, show them the truth.”
“I understand, Alison. Let’s go.” Jack pulled her toward Aidan’s ward.
“Jack, keep your head,” Rock murmured, but his warning went unheard.
“Thanks, Rock. Leave this to me,” Jack said, voice low but steady.
He held her hand tightly the whole way there. As they turned a corner, a dozen men glared at them, their eyes wide with fury.
Jack smiled and dialed the security number.
A few steps later, his phone rang.
An email flashed on his screen—bloody photographs, gruesome proof. In that instant, he finally understood Alison’s fear.
He tightened his grip on her hand and continued walking.
A man watched them pass by casually and hurried into Aimée’s room. “Jack and Alison are coming this way.”
Sylvia sprang from her daughter’s bedside and stormed to the door.
“Jack!” Sylvia shrieked, eyes wild. “Your wife ruined my daughter! I’ll make her pay!”
She lunged at Alison like a madwoman, reaching to grab her by the throat.
Jack swung his arm, sending Sylvia stumbling backward.
Sylvia waved her hands and shouted, “Seize this woman! She turned my daughter into a vegetable! I’ll have her thrown in jail to rot!”
The men surrounded Jack and Alison.
Jack stood ramrod straight, gazing ahead with sharp eyes.
He scanned the faces, then fixed on Sylvia. Pulling his phone from his pocket, he said coldly, “Yes, this accident will be investigated—but not against Alison. Aunt Sylvia, take a look.”
He unlocked his phone, and the screen filled her vision.
Her face turned pale.
The video showed Alison standing with her back to the red convertible, phone pressed to her ear. The car suddenly lurched forward, striking across the crosswalk—and Aidan’s figure flashed into frame, shoving her aside before the impact.
“Jack… you—” Sylvia’s voice trembled; she could barely stand.
Jack smirked, “Aunt Sylvia, do you still want to sue?”
“Ah… no… no…”
Just then, Isabella pushed open the door. “Jack, what did you say? How did you upset Sylvia so much?”
“Mom, ask her yourself. Better yet—ask her whose child Aimée was carrying.”
“Sylvia, what’s going on?” Isabella demanded, confused.
Sylvia shoved Isabella hard. “It’s all your fault! You and your obsession with grandchildren—if it weren’t for that, Aimée wouldn’t have—” Her voice cracked as she turned and stormed back into the ward.
“Jack, what on earth is happening?” Isabella whispered, stunned.
“Mom, come with me,” Jack said quietly, taking Alison’s hand.
Once they reached the balcony, Isabella asked, “Jack, tell me now! What’s going on?”
“Mom,” Jack said gravely, “Aimée’s child wasn’t mine—it was Aidan’s.”
“Ah…” Isabella gasped and sank to the floor. The truth crushed her—for Aimée’s sake, for that unborn child, she had faked her death and forced her son into a sham marriage.
How blind I’ve been…
“Mom,” Jack said softly, “Sophia and Ethan are your true grandchildren. Give them back to Alison.” He took Alison’s hand once more, leading her toward Aidan’s ward.
With her hand on the doorknob, Alison dared not open it.
“Alison, don’t be afraid. I’m here,” Jack gave her an encouraging smile.
