Chapter 171: She’s Gone (Part 2)
Aimée coughed slightly from the smoke. She waved her hand irritably to disperse it. “Jack, I’m pregnant. It’s bad for the baby.”
Jack spoke lightly. “Aimée, end it.”
He knew it was cruel, but it could prevent deeper wounds later. Perhaps Alison had left precisely to spare Aimée this pain.
Aimée flared up. “No! I will never have an abortion! Jack, is that woman really that important to you?”
“Yes, she is,” Jack answered without hesitation, his eyes filled with anguish.
“Fine! I’ll make it happen for you both!” With that, Aimée darted toward the window.
Jack knew her intent; his gaze locked on her.
He frowned.
If Aimée truly killed herself, it would make everything worse.
He reached out, grabbed her, and pulled her back onto the sofa.
“Tell me,” he said coldly. “How can you let me go?”
“I won’t let you go, never! Jack, you still care about me, right? You don’t want me to die.” Aimée perked up hopefully.
He pushed her away, his face twisted with disgust. “I don’t like you at all. Not even a little. What happened that night in Paris was my fault, and I’ll make it up to you, Aimée. Let’s just break up.” He had made up his mind to refuse marriage.
“No! The invitations have already been sent. How am I supposed to erase this? Besides, I’m carrying your child. Do you want me to become a laughingstock? How am I supposed to live?” Aimée said bitterly.
Jack took a deep drag on his cigarette and stubbed it out; his mind spiralled into chaos.
“Get rid of the baby,” he insisted.
“Then the wedding’s off too, right?” Aimée’s mind raced, scrambling to keep her hold on him.
“Yes.”
“Don’t you want to see Alison anymore?” she smirked, though inside she felt desolate.
His eyes flickered. “Do you have a way?”
She chuckled. “Yes.”
“Tell me.” He raised an eyebrow, the sensual curve of it making her heart skip.
“If we get married, she’ll definitely come.”
“Really?”
“Have you forgotten? She promised to be my maid of honour.”
Once we’re married, you’ll never shake me off, Aimée thought. As for Alison—she’ll never be my match.
Jack shook his head.
“She won’t come back. She’s gone,” he said sadly.
“Jack, let’s make a bet. I promise she’ll come,” Aimée declared.
“But I don’t want to get married,” he said. The words stabbed Aimée like a dagger, making her silently vow never to let Alison off the hook.
Aimée drew close, her fingers tracing the rugged lines of his face.
“Jack, this is just a sham marriage. If she shows up, and you’re certain she’s the only one, I’ll step aside.” She whispered, waiting for his nod.
Then she would tighten her grasp on him.
Aimée’s words stirred Jack’s heart. Perhaps Alison would appear. Yet the wedding was only two weeks away.
Maybe I can find her by then.
Seeing his hesitation and the glimmer of hope in his eyes, Aimée pressed, “Jack, if you find her before the wedding, I’ll step aside. If you don’t believe me, I can sign an agreement with you right now. Okay?”
Finally, he nodded. “Alright.”
What he wanted was to find Alison as soon as possible.
Aimée smiled.
She took him back to the hospital and wisely advised him to give way to Isabella. Any grievances could wait until after discharge.
