Chapter 168: Moving (Part 2)

Chapter 168: Moving (Part 2)
“My apartment is quite small. If you don’t mind, you can come stay with me. There’s only one bedroom, though. If you take the bed, your son will have to sleep on the floor.” Jack made it sound pitiful; he really didn’t want to live with his mother. Otherwise, he’d be under her constant watch again.

“Why do you keep living in that tiny room? Still pining for that woman?” his mother asked.

“Mom, what are you saying? My heartbreak hasn’t healed yet. Don’t dwell on nonsense like that. Your priority is getting better,” he quickly reassured her.

“How could I not? If you ever see that woman again, I’ll definitely kill myself,” his mother snapped.

“Mom, I haven’t been to the office in days. If you’re worried, why don’t you wait until Aimée returns? She can come with me to the office.” He tried to persuade his mother, still longing to go out. He desperately missed Alison and the two children.

“We’ll see when Aimée returns,” she said, relenting slightly. Seeing her son so gaunt tugged at her heart.

“All right.” Jack smiled, resigned to waiting.

He sincerely hoped that the chicken soup Aimée brought this time would be decent—enough to let him finally leave the hospital.

At last, Aimée returned.
He rushed to meet her and took the thermos from her hands. “Back already? Is it chicken soup again?”

“Yep, I simmered it just like the other day. I hope Auntie drinks plenty.” If it weren’t for the old woman forcing Jack to marry me, I wouldn’t be going to all this trouble, Aimée thought bitterly.

“All right, set it aside for now. I’ll find a nurse to look after Mum. Come with me to the company, Aimée,” he said lightly. In truth, he really didn’t want to spend a second with Aimée.

As he left the hospital and headed for the car, Aimée followed. “Jack, are you really going to the office?”
She understood Isabella’s stance, but the office was his territory. He would surely find a way to contact that woman there. Since she knew Alison had left, it was the perfect chance for him to show his so-called generosity.

“Yeah, I need to handle some urgent matters,” Jack replied.

Aimée graciously returned his phone. She had already deleted Alison’s call log. As long as Alison kept silent, Jack would never know. Besides, Alison had changed her number.

Reflecting on her scheme, Aimée’s eyes glittered with triumph. She had finally succeeded in driving Alison out of Jack’s world.

Jack looked at Aimée suspiciously, unable to believe she could be so generous. “Do you really want to give it back to me?”

“Yep, it’s yours. I’m stepping out for some air.” Aimée got out of the car, still smiling, certain she had won this battle.

But as he watched her walk away, Jack suddenly felt uneasy.
His mind reeled, and he quickly dialled Alison’s number.

“Sorry, the number you dialled is incorrect. Please dial again.” The automated voice echoed.

The number couldn’t be wrong.

He tried again—same result.

Jack began to panic. He opened the car door and demanded Aimée’s phone.

“Sure,” Aimée replied without hesitation, handing it over.

Jack dialled Alison’s number again, but still couldn’t get through.

“Get in the car,” he ordered coldly, his unease growing stronger by the second.

Aimée calmly got into the car. “Let’s go.”

Before she could finish speaking, Jack slammed his foot on the accelerator.
The car shot forward—not towards the office, but straight to Alison’s house.

“Jack, where are we going? Didn’t you say we were heading to your office?” Aimée feigned confusion, inwardly amused. She was eager to see Jack’s reaction when he couldn’t find Alison—it would surely infuriate him.

“Shut up, or get out, “ Jack snapped. He was frantic with worry for Alison, his every move sharp with panic.

“Jack, what is this? One face in front of Isabella, another the moment we leave the ward? Is this how you treat your mother?” Aimée dragged Isabella into it again, pressing him, though her voice wavered beneath his fury.
