Chapter 91
Chapter 91
"John, do you know where Michael is?" I asked him.
John shook his head. I could tell he wasn't lying. I sighed inwardly—John, this useless guy, was indeed completely worthless.
I thought to myself as I leaned against the car.
"John, I've been really busy at the Johnson Group lately. I want to go back and get some rest. You should go."
John came closer.
"Nancy, can I go back with you? I can take care of you."
I couldn't help but shudder. Everything John was saying made me feel sick.
"No need, I'm really tired. I'm leaving now." I got in the car and drove off, not giving John any chance.
In the rearview mirror, I only saw John's face full of resentment, seemingly because of my attitude.
I didn't care much.
John wouldn't be jumping around for much longer. In fact, the whole Brown family wouldn't be jumping around for much longer. Right now was just their last gasp, even though they refused to admit it themselves.
After getting home, I received another message from Tom.
His people had found some blurry surveillance footage with Michael in it.
My hands trembling, I opened the video. The moment I saw Michael's face, my heart, which had been tightly wound this whole time, finally relaxed.
As long as Michael was okay!
...
With a loud bang, I looked up to see Terrence standing in front of my desk.
"What do you want?" I had no patience for Terrence.
"Everyone says you're so capable, but to me, you look like trash. Look at this project proposal—it's complete garbage. It gives me a headache just looking at it. Redo it. If you can't do it right, just resign and go home."
Terrence looked like a total jerk. I opened the project proposal, looked it over, and then placed it in the upper left corner of my desk.
Seeing that I didn't say anything, Terrence was clearly getting angry.
"Say something! What's that supposed to mean?"
I looked up at him.
"There's nothing wrong with the project proposal. If you think I'm not capable, you can find someone else."
Terrence got even angrier.
"Then resign."
I suddenly said, "You think you're very capable?"
When it came to ability, Terrence was clearly much more proud.
"Of course. Besides, I studied abroad and came back. You think I'm like you?"
I nodded.
"In that case, you handle this project. If you can make it work, I won't doubt your ability, and I won't stand in your way of becoming president."
Hearing my words, Terrence's eyes clearly lit up, but then he became suspicious, staring at me with extreme distrust. "I don't trust you. You're not trying to set me up, are you?"
I shrugged.
"So you mean you can't make this project work?"
"How is that possible!"
Without thinking, Terrence waved his hand dismissively.
I smiled. "Then good luck."
Terrence left with the project proposal, and I contacted Michael's assistant, Chase. I got news that same day.
"Ms. Smith, Terrence has indeed started working on that project and has contacted the person in charge over there."
I acknowledged this. "Keep a close eye on him. Let's see if he's actually capable or just here at the Johnson Group to make a fool of himself."
Chase agreed. After I hung up, I sat in my chair and sighed again.
I got off work early today, so I went to the hospital to visit Amelia.
"Nancy, I was too anxious before. You must be worried too. Michael will be fine. Let's... just wait for him at home."
I nodded, comforted Amelia with a few words, then went back.
Sleeping alone, the big empty bed seemed to be missing someone. I couldn't sleep well all night.
Then my phone lit up. I looked down and saw it was John calling.
Annoyed, I shoved the phone under my pillow. I was really fed up.
Michael, where are you?
With these thoughts, I finally slowly fell asleep, but in my dreams, I saw Michael covered in blood. I woke up startled—it was already the next morning.
I went to work as usual, but without Michael by my side, work felt more like torture.
Three days later, Terrence came to find me, looking smug.
"It's just a simple project. I got it done in just three days."
Terrence proudly handed me the contract.
I nodded thoughtfully. "You're really something. Just yesterday, I heard someone say you probably couldn't handle this project."
Terrence frowned. "Who's talking bad about me behind my back?"
After I mentioned two or three names, Terrence clearly remembered them. He rolled up his sleeves. "Those bastards, I'm going to fire them all! How dare they doubt my ability!"
I didn't stop him.
Those people were Sawyer's key people anyway. If Terrence wanted to fire them, let him—it would solve a few problems for us.
As it turned out, my understanding of Terrence was still too shallow.
Knowing those people worked under Sawyer, he found an opportunity to keep Sawyer busy, then directly fired those people—and did it in Sawyer's name.
Sawyer and Terrence were father and son. With Terrence using Sawyer's name, no one would question it.
Those who knew would just think Sawyer was crossing the bridge and burning it, that he didn't want to do it himself, so he had Terrence do it.
"Those people worked at the Johnson Group for years. Mr. Wheeler really doesn't give anyone face."
As I passed by the break room, I happened to hear some Johnson Group employees talking inside.
Someone immediately said, "Say less. I heard Mr. Wheeler is going to be our future president. If someone hears us and we get fired too, what will we do?"
As it turned out, the person who said this had good foresight.
Because by the next day, those who had said bad things about Terrence were all fired. Among them was even a CFO who had argued with Terrence for a few minutes and was directly fired by Terrence.
That CFO had his pride, too. He packed up his things and left directly, asking the Johnson Group to process his termination before leaving and demanding compensation.
When this matter got to Terrence, he just waved his hand dismissively.
Small change!
When Chase told me about this, I nodded.
"With tactics like these, Terrence still wants to be president? He'd better stick to dreaming."
This might not have worked on Sawyer, but Terrence was still too green. I said just a few words, and he believed me. He really thinks he's some kind of genius.
"Ms. Smith, what's next..."
"Doesn't Sawyer want his son to move up? If this project fails, plus all those people he's offended... I'm afraid..."
I didn't need to spell it out—Chase understood.
Sawyer thinks highly of himself. He probably doesn't know about all the things Terrence has been doing.
