Chapter 50
The pain I expected never came.
Instead, I was caught in a familiar, warm embrace.
Michael nervously held me in his arms, his large hands firmly supporting my waist.
"Nancy, are you okay?" Michael's concerned voice sounded in my ear.
John had been pinned to the ground by Michael's bodyguards.
Even so, he kept shouting. "Nancy, you bitch, I won't let you go. You two have been together all along. You betrayed me!"
John's face was pressed to the ground, his body still struggling. He looked completely pathetic.
I came to my senses and looked at John on the ground, my eyes filled with disgust. "John, get it straight. We were never together. Stop spreading lies about me."
After hearing my words, Michael directly put his arm around my waist in front of everyone.
Many people saw Michael's action and started guessing who I was.
"Is that woman next to Mr. Johnson his fiancée? I've never seen Mr. Johnson with a woman before."
"She must be his fiancée. Didn't Mr. Johnson announce his engagement before?"
"That can't be right. I saw that woman working at the Johnson Group. Could it be that Mr. Johnson is having an affair..."
Although Michael and I had an engagement party before, I was unwilling at the time, so only people in our circle knew my identity.
That was why there were all kinds of guesses now.
Hearing the discussions around us, Michael looked at John and deliberately raised his voice. "Nancy is my fiancée. Our wedding is coming soon. I don't want anyone with bad intentions to do anything to hurt her."
This statement wasn't just for John, but a warning to everyone with bad intentions.
With Michael's confirmation, the discussions suddenly stopped.
John was unwilling to accept this and directly tried to provoke Michael. "Michael, do you think she really loves you? This bitch is just after your power and status. She chased after me like this before, and being with you is the same. What's the difference between you and me?"
As John finished speaking, I kicked him directly. "Watch your mouth! You'll never be like him. You two can't be compared. You're just trash."
After saying that, I took the initiative to hold Michael's hand, interlacing our fingers. "Michael, let's go. Don't waste time with this kind of person."
After getting home, I clearly felt something was off about Michael's mood.
It must have been affected by John's appearance earlier.
I pulled Michael to sit on the sofa, cupped his face, and asked seriously. "Michael, something's wrong with you. Is it because of John?"
Michael stared into my eyes, as if trying to see right through me.
After a long while, he let out a heavy breath and spoke in a hoarse voice. "Yes, when I saw John bothering you, I really wanted to kill him."
As he said this, I could feel the uncontrollable violence in Michael.
Only then did I realize that those rumors outside might be true.
It was just that in front of me, he tried hard to control himself, which is why he appeared so gentle and caring.
Sensing his unease, I moved closer to him and gently, carefully placed a kiss on his lips. "No matter what, you're the one I love. You have to believe that, okay?"
Michael's mood improved slightly, but his eyes were still frighteningly cold.
I understood that even though I kept expressing my feelings to him, he would still feel insecure.
As long as John continued to exist in our lives, he would always be like a ticking time bomb.
If I wanted to live a stable life with Michael long-term, I had to solve the John problem.
Otherwise, he would be like a thorn stuck in Michael's heart forever.
Michael didn't say anything, but his hand unconsciously tightened around my waist.
I held Michael's face tighter and kissed him again.
My lips wandered over him.
Trying to soothe the anxiety in his heart this way.
Feeling my initiative, Michael grabbed my hand and pressed me back onto the sofa. "Nancy, I won't allow you to see him again."
I didn't speak, but hooked my arm around his neck and lightly bit his lip.
This was my response.
My response brought an even more intense and passionate kiss from Michael.
Just as things were getting heated, his phone suddenly rang.
It was Jeffrey calling.
Seeing the number on the screen, his eyes darkened, but he still answered impatiently. "What is it?"
Jeffrey's voice came through the phone. "Michael, I've organized a gathering, kind of a private party. Bring Nancy and come, just to relax."
"Not going." Michael refused without thinking.
He was about to hang up.
Thinking about Michael's unusual mood, I reached out and took the phone from Michael's hand. Before he could react, I answered for him. "Jeffrey, send us the location. We'll be there soon."
Hearing me agree, Jeffrey sounded very happy and responded repeatedly. "Great! I'll send you the address. Remember to bring Michael."
Afraid Michael would change his mind, Jeffrey hung up right after answering, not giving him any chance.
When I returned the phone to Michael, he spoke in a low voice. "You want to go to the party?"
Actually, I wasn't interested in parties.
I agreed to go only to help ease Michael's mood, and also as a kind of pre-wedding bachelor party.
"Yes, I want to go. You'll come with me, right?" I blinked my eyes and said to Michael expectantly.
"Okay." Michael agreed readily, without any hesitation.
The party was that evening.
I specially changed into a wine-red off-shoulder dress and curled my hair in big waves, a completely different style from usual.
Seeing me dressed up, Michael's eyes never left me.
"You look so beautiful today, I almost don't want to take you out." Michael's tone was full of appreciation, even with a hint of jealousy.
Seeing him like this, I deliberately teased. "Then you'd better work hard to make money in the future and keep me at home as your princess."
Michael took my hand and coaxed me. "I can't bear to limit your freedom. Let's go."
The party venue wasn't far away.
When we arrived, quite a few people were already there.
Most people at the party were Michael's friends. I didn't know them.
I stayed close to Michael's side, our fingers interlaced.
Seeing us arrive, Bianca deliberately picked up a wine glass and walked toward me. "Nancy, we had some misunderstandings before. I'll take this opportunity to apologize to you."
With that, Bianca handed the wine glass to me.
Seeing Bianca's obviously ill-intentioned look, I had no intention of taking it.
But even so, it didn't stop Bianca from making a scene.
Bianca pretended to be surprised and splashed the red wine in her glass at me. "Oops, Nancy, I didn't mean to."
The entire glass of red wine spilled out, staining my dress with very noticeable spots.
