Chapter 39
Jane was startled by his actions and didn't know what to do for a moment.
Michael didn't bother explaining. He directly dialed Jane's father, Henry Ross.
The phone rang for a few seconds before someone picked up.
Henry's flattering voice came through the receiver. "Mr. Johnson, what made you think of calling me?"
Michael glanced at Jane with disdain, then spoke as a warning. "Your daughter has been spreading rumors in my ward. This has greatly affected my fiancée. If you don't want the Ross family to be impacted, I hope you can control your daughter and stop those spreading the rumors."
Sensing something was wrong from Michael's tone, Henry became even more humble and quickly agreed. "Yes, Mr. Johnson, you're absolutely right. I know what to do. Don't worry, I'll give you a satisfactory answer."
Getting a clear response, Michael didn't waste more words and hung up directly.
"Why aren't you leaving yet? Waiting for me to have Henry come get you?" Michael put down his phone and finally looked at Jane beside him.
Jane never expected things would turn out this way. She felt wronged, her eyes reddening slightly. "Michael, we've known each other for so many years. I was just looking out for you. How could you do this?"
But Michael didn't care about her words at all. Instead, he warned her. "Jane, you think I can't see what you're really thinking? If it weren't for the Ross family's reputation, you would've been thrown out already."
At these words, Jane felt even more wronged. She never imagined Michael could be so heartless.
"If you know what's good for you, get out now. Otherwise, I'll have someone throw you at the Ross Villa's doorstep." Michael always meant what he said. Jane didn't dare keep pestering him.
Looking at Michael's cold, stern face, Jane felt unwilling, but could only leave in tears.
After she left, I quietly cleaned up the mess.
Seeing me working silently, Michael grabbed my wrist and pulled me to sit on the bed.
"What's wrong? Are you upset?" Michael instinctively covered my hand and pressed my cool palm against his chest. "Nancy, don't listen to those baseless words. Don't let them affect your mood."
Feeling the warmth from his chest, my nose tingled, but I remained silent.
Seeing Michael like this, I couldn't help but think of my past life.
Although I knew those words were just rumors, my emotions were still affected.
I hid my feelings and asked in a joking manner. "Michael, what if what they say is true—that I bring bad luck to my loved ones? What would you do? Aren't you afraid?"
Hearing my question, Michael gripped my hand tighter, his tone carrying some anger. "Don't ever say things like that again. Even if you really did bring bad luck to loved ones, I wouldn't be afraid."
Though Michael was angry, his answer was firm.
Looking into his eyes, I didn't know what to feel.
Seeing me silent, Michael firmly cupped my face, forcing me to look at him, then stated his position again. "No matter what, I will never let go of your hand. Even if you really do bring bad luck to loved ones, as long as I can be with you, no matter how long, I'll feel happy."
My heart filled with emotion, but I didn't know how to face Michael.
I withdrew my hand from his chest and pretended to be casual. "I was just asking randomly. Who would believe that nonsense anyway? I certainly don't."
But despite my words, my mood didn't improve at all.
The scenes from my past life were vivid in my mind. For the first time, I began to worry that I couldn't change fate.
I didn't want Michael to die because of me again. I owed him too much.
I deliberately avoided meeting his eyes.
Michael noticed something was wrong with my mood and seriously reassured me again. "Nancy, I don't want you to be affected by that nonsense. Don't take those baseless words to heart."
Even with Michael's repeated comfort, I didn't dare respond directly.
Jane's appearance and her words made my feelings extremely complicated. I didn't know how to face Michael for a moment.
Looking at his determined eyes, I just wanted to escape.
I grabbed my phone randomly and made up an excuse. "I didn't bring a charger. I'm going to buy one."
But Michael held my hand tighter and instructed seriously. "Be safe. I'll wait for you to come back."
He knew my mind was in chaos, so he gave me time to relax and calm down.
I nodded and mumbled my agreement, then fled the ward.
After leaving the room, my mood became even more complicated.
The avalanche from my past life played repeatedly in my mind like a curse.
The moment Michael died, holding me felt like it had just happened.
I was a mess. I had only wanted to use buying a charger as an excuse to go out and calm down a bit.
Now I suddenly didn't know where to go.
I unconsciously walked toward the underground parking lot, planning to drive around nearby.
But what I didn't expect was that as soon as I entered the underground parking lot, I heard footsteps behind me.
I became instantly alert and instinctively looked back, but saw nothing, as if it was just my imagination.
I gripped my phone tightly, my finger constantly on the emergency dial button.
I couldn't tell if those people were coming for me, so I could only quicken my pace to shake them off.
But after I sped up, I confirmed that those people's target was me.
I didn't know who I had offended. I only knew that if I didn't escape quickly, the consequences would be terrible.
And the faster I walked, the person would jog to keep up.
I couldn't help but get nervous, instinctively clenching my hands into fists.
I ran while checking how far that person was from me.
I still hadn't seen who was following me.
This unknown control dominated me, making me afraid to let my guard down.
I quickened my steps. I was almost at my parking spot, but my path was blocked.
"Hey girl, where are you going? Want us guys to give you a ride?" Suddenly, a sleazy, creepy man blocked my way.
Seeing the man, my heart beat uncontrollably. I was extremely nervous.
"No need, I can go by myself."
Being blocked, I instinctively turned to escape in another direction, but what I didn't expect was that there was more than one person.
Besides the man in front of me, two more men came from different directions.
A man's teasing voice came from behind me. "Girl, you can't escape. We guys came to pick you up today."
In an instant, the three men blocked all my escape routes.
