Chapter 36

Chapter 36

As dawn broke, the operating room light finally changed from red to green.

Several doctors in white coats emerged from the operating room once again.

I instantly snapped to attention, quickly scrambling up from the floor and rushing toward the doctors.

"How is he? Did the surgery go well?" I asked urgently.

The doctor shook his head, his expression serious. "The patient is out of danger, but he hasn't woken up yet. We'll need to see how he recovers. His legs were severely injured - the situation isn't looking good."

As long as he was alive, this wasn't the worst outcome.

I breathed a sigh of relief and pressed the doctor for more information. "When will he wake up? Will his legs recover?"

The doctor's expression grew even more serious as he gave us the facts about Michael's condition. "Whether he'll be able to walk normally again depends on his recovery, but please rest assured - the chances of full recovery are quite high."

The doctor's words put my mind at ease. As long as there was some chance, the outcome wasn't too bad. "Thank you, doctor. We understand. We'll take good care of him." I quickly thanked the doctor and stepped aside to let him leave.

After Michael was out of danger, the hospital moved him to a VIP room.

I stayed by his side all night without sleep, afraid something might happen to him.

Fortunately, thanks to timely treatment, aside from not being able to move his legs normally, Michael had no other issues.

It wasn't until the third day that Michael woke up from his coma.

I had been keeping watch by his side and had dozed off without realizing it.

I suddenly woke when I felt someone touching the top of my head.

Seeing it was Michael in the hospital bed reaching out his hand, I was overjoyed and quickly grabbed his hand. "Michael, you're finally awake. Do you know how worried I've been these past few days?"

As I said this, my voice gradually took on a tearful tone.

Seeing me like this, Michael apologized guiltily. "I'm sorry, Nancy. It's all my fault for making you worry."

I pressed my face against his hand, shaking my head in denial. "No, as long as you're okay, everything's fine."

Looking at Michael, now pale and weak, my heart ached. I couldn't help but think of events from my past life.

Back then, during the avalanche, he had held me tightly in his arms. Before he died, he had looked just like this.

Thinking of the past, tears fell from my eyes.

Seeing me cry, Michael gently wiped away my tears with his thumb and apologized again. "I'm sorry, Nancy. The way I am now, I won't be able to marry you this month."

Hearing his words, I took the initiative to hug him, constantly comforting him. "It's okay, we'll be together sooner or later."

Just then, Jeffrey arrived with Bianca to visit.

Seeing me hugging Michael, a flash of jealousy crossed Bianca's eyes.

Jeffrey caught her look.

Jeffrey felt a bit awkward and shot her a warning glance to stop, then took the initiative to thank Michael. "Michael, I'm sorry. This is my fault, and thank you for saving me."

At the time, the two of them had been meeting on the roadside when a drunk driver came straight at them. In that critical moment, Michael had pushed Jeffrey out of the way.

So Jeffrey only had minor scrapes, while Michael was thrown by the car and seriously injured.

Michael, weak as he was, still tried to comfort him. "We're friends - don't say such sentimental things. Besides, I'm fine, aren't I?"

Seeing me in the room, Jeffrey placed the supplements he'd brought on the bedside table and said to me, "Nancy, these are some supplements I brought for Michael. With you here, I can relax. Bianca and I won't disturb you any longer."

With that, Jeffrey wanted to leave with Bianca.

Noticing Jeffrey's move, Bianca seemed reluctant.

Bianca kept her eyes on Michael in the hospital bed and made up an excuse to stay. "Jeffrey, you go ahead. Michael got hurt saving you - I want to stay and take care of him."

Hearing this, I instinctively frowned.

Never mind whether I was here or not.

Even if I wasn't, taking care of Michael wouldn't be Bianca's responsibility.

What's more, I had seen Bianca's look earlier, clear as day.

Her feelings toward Michael were definitely not innocent.

There was no way I would let someone like that stay by Michael's side.

I didn't need that kind of trouble.

Clearly, Jeffrey was also surprised that Bianca would say such a thing, and he immediately refused. "Michael saved me, not you. Why are you taking care of him?"

Seeing Jeffrey's attitude, I nodded with satisfaction.

At least one of these siblings had their head on straight.

But Bianca was still reluctant and kept insisting. "Someone from our family should stay to take care of Michael, right? Otherwise, what will people say about us?"

I had to admit, Bianca was good at finding excuses.

But the more she insisted, the less I would give in to her.

Seeing her persist, my face instantly turned cold, and I refused without any courtesy. "Bianca, Michael only sees you as a sister. Besides, he was injured saving your brother; you don't need to specially take care of him. And anyway, I'm here at the hospital, so we won't trouble you."

Even after my refusal, Bianca was still unwilling to give up.

Jeffrey saw through Bianca's thoughts and directly scolded her. "Nancy and Michael have a great relationship - what are you trying to mess up? Come with me, stop being in the way here."

I had already refused earlier, so Jeffrey naturally had to take a stand at this point, otherwise it would be hard for him to face Michael and me in the future.

After being scolded by Jeffrey, Bianca felt wronged. "Jeffrey, I just want to do my part. Besides, Michael and I grew up together; Nancy doesn't know Michael as well as I do."

Hearing Bianca's words, I said nothing.

Seeing she still wouldn't leave, Jeffrey slapped her on the head and continued scolding. "Go! If you keep getting in the way of Michael and Nancy's business, you can forget about your allowance from now on."

After saying this, Jeffrey gave me an apologetic smile. "Sorry about that, Nancy. Bianca has never known boundaries since she was little. Don't hold it against her."

After speaking, Jeffrey urgently tried to pull Bianca away, afraid that waiting even one more second would cause my displeasure.

"I know what I'm doing!" But Bianca wouldn't give up and broke free. Her gaze fell on Michael and wouldn't leave. She even started trying to guilt-trip me.

"Nancy, I just want to help you take care of Michael, so people won't talk badly about our family. You'll give me this chance, won't you?"

Her eyes held a certain confidence, as if she was sure I wouldn't refuse.
