Chapter 33
As expected, the result was the same as in my previous life.
Susan was really pregnant.
Thank goodness I bet right this time.
I quickly suppressed my excitement and asked with a puzzled tone, "Susan, how did you get pregnant?"
As I spoke, I handed the medical report to Susan and watched her expression carefully.
Susan was stunned when she heard my words, then looked incredulous. "What? Pregnant? Is there a mistake?"
Susan quickly flipped through the report. It seemed she didn't know about the pregnancy either.
Seeing my eyes fixed on her, she forced a smile and made up a lame excuse to fool me. "Maybe it's because I ate eggs this morning. This result can't be right. How could I be pregnant? I'll go ask the doctor."
With that, Susan hurriedly left with the report.
Watching Susan rush off, I secretly followed her.
I saw Susan deliberately hiding in the stairwell to call John.
I quietly took out my phone and turned on the camera to record secretly.
Once connected, Susan spoke urgently, "John, I'm pregnant. The baby is yours."
At these words, John's shocked voice came through the phone. "You're pregnant? Didn't you say you were going to use pregnancy as an excuse to ruin Nancy and Michael's wedding? How did you end up being the one who's pregnant?"
Listening to their conversation from my hiding spot, I couldn't control my excitement.
Originally, I wanted to use the medical report to clear things up and then make a big deal out of Susan's pregnancy to shift attention, but I didn't expect this bonus discovery.
Susan shook her head, looking helpless. "Maybe we didn't use protection properly that day. What do we do now, John? Everyone knows Nancy has been chasing you for so long, and I'm Nancy's friend. What will people think of me?"
She didn't expect things to turn out this way, and neither did I.
In my previous life, I only found out these two were together at the very end, but I didn't know it had started much earlier than I thought.
At this time in my previous life, when Susan got pregnant, she told me she'd been tricked by a boyfriend and asked me to help her keep it secret.
Later, that baby miscarried, and the whole thing was treated as if it never happened.
"That's not the most important thing. What's the situation with Nancy now?" John's focus wasn't on this unexpected baby at all. Instead, he was asking about my situation.
Susan shook her head and reported everything truthfully.
I recorded everything Susan said and created a fake account to post it in our social circle's group chat.
News about Susan framing me and being pregnant spread quickly.
The criticism aimed at me now turned toward Susan.
I was satisfied with this result, but still felt it wasn't enough.
However, I had no way to take the next step for now, so I could only temporarily let Susan and John off.
But I underestimated John's psychological resilience. Even while in the eye of the storm, he still had time to harass me.
Downstairs at the Smith Group, I had just arrived at the company when I saw a large number of roses arranged at the entrance, even thoughtfully shaped into a heart.
And looking up, the first thing to catch my eye was John himself.
He held a large bouquet of pink roses. When he saw me appear, he quickly walked toward me.
John stopped in front of me and confessed his feelings. "Nancy, I've thought a lot these past few days. I really can't live without you. It was wrong of me to reject you before. Can you give me a chance now to make up for our past?"
I frowned and took a step back, asking, "John, what act are you putting on now? You think I'll hand over my project to you just because you arranged some roses? Dream on."
John's feelings for me weren't love—it was more about the value and benefits I brought.
If he could win my heart, following the pattern from my previous life, the Smith Group wouldn't last long before being completely devoured by him.
This performance now was just to make me hand over my project.
This was John's specialty, whether with me or Susan.
As long as it benefited him, he'd use any means necessary.
When I exposed his intentions, John's expression was quite something, but he still tried to maintain his composure. "Nancy, stop being stubborn, okay? As long as you're willing to come back to me, I can pretend everything before never happened, including your engagement to Michael."
I looked at him, my tone dripping with sarcasm. "John, you're only coming to me now because you can't find anyone better. Besides me, no one can bring you greater benefits, and no one will be as devoted to you as I once was."
Having his thoughts exposed, John's emotions became increasingly uncontrollable, and he even turned threatening. "Nancy, you must agree to be with me today."
With that, he grabbed me and even tried to get physical.
Seeing this, I struggled constantly to shake off his hand.
But John's strength was greater than I expected. He said obsessively, "Didn't you love me so much before? Now I love you too. Let's be together forever, okay?"
John's obsession now made him feel like a stranger. I couldn't see through this person in front of me anymore.
At the same time, I was grateful I had left him.
"Let go, John. This is the Smith Group. I'll call the cops." I tried hard to push him away with my hands, doing my best to stop him from getting closer.
But the difference in our strength was too great. I couldn't break free.
Just then, a scream rang out in front of me.
The force on my hand disappeared.
A warm chest pulled me into an embrace. Only when the fresh woody scent reached me did my heart settle down.
I didn't know why Michael was here, but I was grateful he came.
"It's okay now, Nancy. I'm here." Michael gently patted my back to comfort me, coaxing me for a while before letting go.
John clutched his face and staggered back. When he saw it was Michael, his eyes turned red with anger. "Michael, you're looking for death, ruining my plans again."
With that, John swung his fist.
Unfortunately, before John's fist could land, Michael caught his wrist.
Michael controlled him and kicked him hard in the stomach.
Without giving John a chance to react, he landed several more kicks until John could barely stand, then stopped.
John was unwilling to give up and tried to manipulate me. "Nancy, he's violent. You won't be happy with him. Only I truly love you. As long as you're willing, I'll do everything you wanted to do before with you."
Hearing this, I smiled and walked toward John, actively reaching out my hand to him.
John thought he saw hope and moved toward me despite the pain, adding, "I remember you love the beach. We can buy a house by the sea."
A crisp slap rang out. I shook my aching wrist.
