Chapter 44
Charlotte froze for a moment.
This was one of the three major families, on par with the Langley family and the Harris family.
Yet the moment he opened his mouth, he wanted to hand over such a large corporation for her to manage.
Charlotte snapped back to reality and immediately refused, "This is too sudden. I have absolutely no experience managing a large corporation. You should find someone else."
She didn't want to rashly accept management rights to such a corporation.
Without even thinking about it, the White Group must have deep waters. Otherwise, Daniel wouldn't have been searching around for so long without finding a suitable heir.
Daniel became a bit anxious. "You can learn and gain experience gradually if you don't have it. I'm a good judge of character! In this world, besides you, no one else is qualified to inherit my corporation. Please don't refuse me, okay?"
He was an old man over eighty, sincerely pleading in a way that made it hard to refuse.
Charlotte frowned, not knowing what to say.
She looked toward Victoria.
Seeing this, Daniel immediately said, "I've known your mother for twenty years and trust her completely. The Langley family and the White family have very close business dealings. I know a lot about your situation. She also promised me that before I die, she would definitely help me find a suitable heir, so I can rest in peace."
"As her daughter, I absolutely can't be wrong about you. You have the ability to manage a large company. If the White Group is placed in your hands, I won't worry that you'll swallow up my corporation for profit. You also have enough ability to lead both the White Group and the Langley Group to greater heights. I've made up my mind about you!"
Daniel spoke more and more urgently, stepping forward to grab Charlotte's arm.
"Charlotte, I really can't bear to see my company fall into other people's hands. This is all the hard work of me, my wife, and my son. Just help me fulfill my only wish, okay?"
On his aged face was a helplessness about the passing of life.
Charlotte could see that after experiencing the pain of losing his wife and son, Daniel really hadn't found anyone better to inherit the company.
Just as he said, if he couldn't find the right person, he probably wouldn't be able to rest in peace.
Charlotte felt very conflicted inside.
Daniel had power and influence, but at this age, he was all alone. He held billions in wealth but couldn't find a single person he could trust.
Charlotte turned to look at Victoria.
Victoria let out a soft sigh. "Charlotte, it's because I noticed on your very first day at work that you were sharp and perceptive that I brought you to meet Daniel. I know this is very sudden and puts a lot of pressure on you, but I really want to help him fulfill this wish."
Daniel slowly took out a medical report from his drawer and handed it to Charlotte.
"Late-stage stomach cancer. Less than three months to live."
Charlotte was somewhat shocked.
She couldn't tell at all that Daniel was a terminal cancer patient.
She lowered her eyes to look at the medical report, then looked up at Daniel again.
After a long silence, Charlotte finally nodded.
"Alright, I'm willing, but I have one condition."
Daniel's eyes lit up. "Tell me."
"For the next month, I'll first manage the corporation as an advisor by your side."
Daniel and Victoria exchanged glances. He hesitated, "Why is that?"
Charlotte said calmly, "In one month's time, I'll be able to see clearly what those people in the company really think."
Both seemed to understand but not quite, exchanging another look.
Daniel smiled and said cheerfully, "Fine, we'll do as you say!"
He took out share transfer documents and a will from nearby, writing Charlotte's name in the positions of share transferee and asset beneficiary.
Charlotte looked at the several things he had prepared, somewhat stunned. "You prepared all this beforehand?"
"Yes, just waiting to find the real heir. Starting today, you're my granddaughter. The shares, company assets—everything is yours now."
Daniel smiled with satisfaction. "You can't back out even if you want to."
Charlotte felt somewhat helpless.
She'd never seen anyone so eager to directly give away billions in assets to someone and be so happy about it.
Charlotte took a deep breath and finally picked up the pen, signing her name on the contract.
She put down the pen and looked up solemnly. "Grandpa."
This word "Grandpa" brought tears to Daniel's eyes.
He nodded repeatedly. "Good, the White family has a successor now. Good child, this is for you."
Daniel removed a jade thumb ring from his hand, pulled Charlotte's hand over, and placed it in her palm.
"Keep it with you at all times. Seeing this jade ring is the same as seeing me."
Charlotte seriously accepted the ring and expressed her thanks to Daniel. This also showed they both accepted each other as family.
When leaving, Victoria nodded to Daniel.
"It's time to release the news."
Daniel nodded, watching them leave before turning his head to glance at the servant.
The servant understood and withdrew.
In less than half an hour, a bombshell piece of news suddenly appeared throughout Imperial City.
The news that Daniel White had recognized a goddaughter spread throughout high society circles.
Everyone was shocked, scrambling to find out who this person he had recognized as his goddaughter was.
Inside the White Group, it was announced that in addition to the assistant by Daniel's side, a new special advisor would be added to help him manage the company.
The reason given was that Daniel was getting old and didn't have the energy anymore.
But all the shareholders smelled something unusual.
Out of nowhere, there was suddenly an additional advisor. It seemed like help, but in reality, it was more like someone coming to investigate the company's internal situation.
Everyone was speculating that this so-called advisor might be the heir Daniel was planning to pass things on to next.
In other words, the goddaughter he had suddenly recognized.
People were speculating everywhere, and the Harris family also had someone look into it.
Soon Edward got the news and rushed straight to Charlotte's villa.
An annoying doorbell rang at the villa's main gate. The butler hurried to open the door and welcomed Edward inside.
Edward looked anxious, walking quickly even while leaning on his cane.
As soon as he reached the living room, he saw Charlotte working on something on her computer and hurried over.
"I haven't recognized you as my goddaughter yet! How did Daniel beat me to it? No, no, you can't be his granddaughter. You have to be my granddaughter!"
Charlotte was amused by his childish, whining tone and closed her computer.
"Why is everyone fighting to make me their granddaughter? Mr. Edward Harris, what benefit is there for you if I become your granddaughter?"
"Of course there's a benefit! Having such an outstanding granddaughter like you would be like a gift from God! I'd be incredibly happy every single day!"
Edward was all worked up, fully prepared to win her over.
Just then, from the corner of his eye, he caught sight of a car stopping outside his house and suddenly paused.
"Actually, you don't need to be my granddaughter."
"What do you mean?" Charlotte was puzzled.
Edward smiled. "Even if you don't become my goddaughter, you can still become family with me."
With that, he got up and went outside, waving at the car.
Charlotte followed his gaze and saw Alexander just getting out of the car.
