Sarah's POV
"Marcus is Amy Stone?" I stared down at Vincent choking Marcus. "That's impossible!"
My gun was shaking in my hands. Everything I thought I knew was falling apart.
"Shoot him, Sarah!" Marcus gasped, his face turning blue.
But I couldn't pull the trigger. If Marcus was really my sister Amy, then Vincent was killing my family member. But what if Vincent was lying again?
"Sarah, don't listen to him," Maya called out, her eyes still glowing with the ghost's power. "Vincent lies about everything."
That's when Marcus did something amazing. Even though Vincent was choking him, Marcus grabbed a sharp rock and stuck it into Vincent's arm.
Vincent screamed and let go. Marcus rolled away, breathing hard.
"Sarah, get down here and arrest him!" Marcus shouted.
I jumped down into the hole, my handcuffs ready. But Vincent was already getting up, blood dripping from his hurt arm.
"You can't arrest me, Sarah," Vincent said with the ghost's creepy smile. "I'm already dead."
"Dead people can still go to jail," I said, pointing my gun at him.
Vincent laughed. "Sarah, you still don't understand. I'm not just one ghost. I'm thousands of ghosts, all the people I've killed over the years."
"What do you mean?"
"Every person I killed, their spirit joined with mine. I'm not just the real Sarah Kane anymore. I'm every victim of the Martinez family tests."
That's when Maya and Elena started moving toward us again, their eyes sparkling brighter.
"And now," Vincent continued, "all those angry spirits want revenge on the Martinez family."
I looked at Marcus. "Marcus, are you really Amy Stone?"
Marcus's face was full of confusion. "Sarah, I don't know. I remember being a boy my whole life. But sometimes I have dreams about being a little girl who lived with you."
"Amy used to have a stuffed rabbit named Mr. Hops," I said carefully.
Marcus's eyes went wide. "I remember Mr. Hops. He was brown with floppy ears. But how do I know that if I'm not Amy?"
Vincent was backing toward a tunnel opening. "Because Marcus IS Amy, Sarah. I changed her body with my machines and deleted her memories. But the thoughts are still buried in her mind."
I felt tears running down my face. My sister Amy was living, but she had been turned into someone else.
"Marcus, do you remember me singing you lullabies when you were scared?" I asked.
"You used to sing about stars," Marcus said softly. "About how stars watch over people they love."
"Oh my God," I whispered. "You really are Amy."
But Vincent was getting away. He was almost at the tunnel opening.
"Stop right there!" I shouted, chasing after him.
Vincent turned around. "Sarah, you can arrest this body, but you can't arrest a ghost. I'll just take over someone else."
"Then I'll arrest every body you take over," I said strongly.
"Even if I take over Marcus?"
My heart stopped. "What?"
"That's right, Sarah. If you catch me, I'll jump into Marcus's body. Then you'll have to arrest your own sister."
I looked back at Marcus, who was helping dig Elena out of the rocks. Marcus was my sister Amy, but she didn't even know it yet.
"Vincent, leave my family alone," I said.
"I can't do that. The angry spirits inside me won't let me stop until every Martinez is dead."
That's when Maya broke free from the ghost's power.
"Sarah!" Maya called out, her eyes normal again. "Vincent is weak right now because he used too much power controlling us. This is your chance to stop him!"
I raised my gun, but Vincent held up his hands.
"Sarah, before you arrest me, don't you want to know about Amy's real parents?"
"You already told me. Amy is my sister."
Vincent smiled evilly. "Amy Stone isn't your real sister, Sarah. Amy Stone is your daughter."
The world seemed to stop spinning.
"That's impossible," I whispered. "I've never had children."
"You had a daughter when you were fifteen years old," Vincent said. "Your parents made you give the baby up for adoption and told you the baby died. But I found Amy and brought her to live with your family."
I felt like I was going to throw up. "You're lying."
"Ask your parents, Sarah. Ask them what really happened to the baby you gave birth to twenty years ago."
Marcus was looking at us from across the cave. "Sarah, what is he talking about?"
I couldn't speak. If Vincent was telling the truth, then Marcus wasn't my sister. Marcus was my child.
"Vincent Kane," I said, trying to keep my voice steady, "you're under arrest for kidnapping, murder, and illegal experiments on human beings."
I put the handcuffs on Vincent's wrists. But he was still happy.
"Sarah, arresting me won't solve your problems," Vincent said quietly.
"What problems?"
Vincent leaned close to my ear and whispered, "I have partners in twelve different countries. Right now, they're doing the same tests I was doing here. Thousands of children are being held prisoner just like Amy was."
My blood turned cold. "What partners?"
"Scientists in Russia, doctors in Japan, experts in Germany. We've been sharing knowledge about how to control people's minds and bodies."
"You're lying to try to escape."
"Check my computer files, Sarah. Everything is recorded. Names, places, prisoner lists. The Martinez family experiments are going all over the world."
I felt sick. If Vincent was telling the truth, then saving Amy and the other prisoners here was just the beginning.
"Where are these other places?" I asked.
"I'll make you a deal," Vincent said. "Let me go, and I'll give you all the information to save those other children."
"I don't make deals with monsters."
"Then thousands of children will stay prisoners forever."
Marcus walked over to us. "Sarah, what is he talking about?"
"Vincent says there are other places like this all over the world," I explained. "Other children being held prisoner."
Marcus's face went pale. "We have to save them."
"We will," I said firmly. "Vincent, I'm not letting you go, but I am taking your computer files."
Vincent laughed. "The files are encrypted, Sarah. Only I know the password."
"Then you'll give me the password."
"Why would I do that?"
"Because if you don't, I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life in the worst prison cell I can find."
Vincent was quiet for a moment. Then he said something that made my heart stop.
"Sarah, the password won't matter anyway."
"Why not?"
"Because my partners know you found this place. Right now, they're moving all their prisoners to new sites."
I grabbed Vincent by his shirt. "What do you mean?"
"I mean that while you were busy rescuing Amy, you let thousands of other children slip away forever."
That's when my phone started ringing. I looked at the caller ID, and it was my boss at the police station.
"Sarah," my boss said when I answered, "we just got reports of explosions at twelve different sites around the world. Looks like someone is destroying proof."
Vincent smiled his evil smile. "Too late, Sarah. The children are gone, and you'll never find them now."
But then Marcus grabbed Vincent's phone from his pocket.
"Sarah, look at this," Marcus said, showing me the phone screen.
There was a text message that had just come in: "Phase Two activated. All subjects went to the Island. Initiation tomorrow at midnight."
"What island?" I asked, shaking Vincent.
Vincent's smile got even bigger. "The one place you'll never be able to reach them, Sarah. The one place where the real tests are about to begin."
That's when I noticed something scary. Vincent's handcuffs were starting to melt off his wrists.
"Sarah," Marcus said quickly, "his body is getting hot. I think the ghost is going."
Vincent's eyes rolled back, and he fell to the ground.
But then I heard the ghost's voice coming from the speakers again.
"Goodbye, Sarah. I'll see you on the Island."
And then Vincent's phone showed one final message: "Sarah Kane expected to arrive within 24 hours. Prepare her cell."
