Chapter 45 Betrayers Go to Hell
Nancy watched as Steven darted out the door without a second thought. She opened her mouth to call him back, but the words stuck in her throat.
She knew she had no right to stop him.
And he wouldn't stop chasing after Rachel for her anyway.
Steven had promised to make it up to her tonight for her demotion by taking her out for dinner and a movie, but he ditched her for Rachel.
Anger, resentment, frustration, and bitterness all surged within her.
Nancy clenched her fists, closed her eyes, and forced herself to swallow the bitterness. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Benjamin calmly and elegantly cutting into his steak.
Her mind shifted, and she put on a sweet smile. "Mr. Wright, please don't mind Rachel. She might have some misunderstandings about me and her husband. We've been best friends for almost a decade, but she still doesn't trust me."
She paused deliberately, then asked with concern, "You mentioned she hit your car earlier. Was it serious?"
Benjamin ignored Nancy's words.
Nancy waited for over ten seconds, her expression gradually turning awkward. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Would it be alright if I joined you? It seems there aren't any other seats available."
Benjamin's eyes were cold, his brows slightly furrowed, annoyed by her chatter.
He set down his utensil, dabbed his mouth with a napkin, and opened his lips coolly and distantly. "Suit yourself."
Nancy was taken aback, not expecting him to agree.
A glimmer of joy flashed in her eyes. She thanked him and gracefully moved to the seat where Rachel had been. Just as she was about to call a waiter to clean up and order, Benjamin stood up.
"Mr. Wright, you—?"
Benjamin gave her a brief glance, picked up his coat, and walked away.
Nancy stood there, stunned, biting her lip in shame and frustration. She lowered her head and headed upstairs.
After leaving the restaurant, Rachel got into her car. Steven ran out and knocked on her car door a few times, but she ignored him, stepped on the gas, and drove straight home.
Steven's car followed closely behind.
She had barely entered the master bedroom when Steven came in, just in time to see her drop her bag on the couch, spilling its contents everywhere.
He rushed over and tried to explain, "Honey, there's nothing between Nancy and me. You know she doesn't like me, and I don't care for her either. We just happened to run into each other in the parking lot today."
"Sure, just a coincidence. You ran into each other at the school reunion last time, and now this," Rachel said, her face expressionless. "Then tell me, why does she look at you so... intimately? When you two walked in, I thought you were a couple."
Steven's heart skipped a beat. He didn't have time to recall Nancy's gaze. He raised three fingers solemnly, "I swear, Rachel, you're the only one in my heart. There will never be anyone else. If I'm lying, may I live a lonely life and meet a bad end."
Rachel looked at him and suddenly found it laughable.
Did he not feel guilty making such promises?
"Those who betray true love deserve to go to hell."
Steven stiffened. He gently caressed her cheek with his thumb, his deep voice carrying a hint of allure. "Honey, please believe me. I love you. I will always only love you."
As he leaned in to kiss her, Rachel turned her face away, keeping her stern expression. "Really?"
Seeing her serious, jealous look, Steven's tense body and nerves relaxed instantly.
He sighed helplessly, lightly tapping her nose with his finger. "What else? I never realized you could get so jealous."
Just then, he noticed an open document on the couch. Curious, he picked it up. "What's this?"
"An ultrasound report."
When he read the contents, he was speechless for a moment, his Adam's apple bobbing as he struggled to find words.
Rachel watched his reaction, pouting. "What's with that look? Not happy? Give it back then!"
As she reached to grab the report, Steven suddenly lifted her up in excitement, spinning her around.
Rachel, startled, slapped his back a few times before he put her down.
Steven's eyes were filled with uncontrollable excitement. "Honey, I'm going to be a dad? I'm really going to be a dad?"
