Chapter 316: Text Message Reminder: Passive Braking

After Benjamin reviewed the surveillance footage again, he confirmed that Nancy had only appeared near Stargaze Gallery twice - one evening two days ago and last night around 10 PM.

"In these two surveillance clips, if you weren't familiar with Nancy, an outsider might not even recognize her. Right now we don't know what Nancy's up to, so this still isn't not enough to justify filing a police report.

During this period, the security at Stargaze Gallery needs to be strengthened."

Hearing this, Rachel nodded seriously, "Okay, I understand."

It was precisely because she knew there wasn't enough evidence that she hadn't had the security guard call the police last night.

As they were talking, Nathaniel knocked on the office door and came in carrying several documents. "Mr. Wright, here's the sentencing recommendation from the prosecutor's office and the court hearing notice."

Benjamin reached out to take them, his eyes lingering on the date on the sentencing recommendation, his brow furrowing slightly.

After a while, he took out his pen and signed, then looked up and instructed, "Help me schedule a time with Yosef tomorrow, and organize Uriah's alibi records and the neighbors' statements."

Nathaniel responded with a "yes" and took the documents back out.

Rachel glanced at the time and saw it was already 6 PM. She asked, "Are you working late tonight?"

"No need, let's go now."

Benjamin stood up, went back to his desk, and grabbed his car keys and suit jacket from the coat rack. "Do you want to eat at home or go out for dinner?"

"Let's go out. Going home means cooking, it's too much trouble."

Rachel picked up her bag and walked out of the office with him. After he put on his jacket, he firmly grasped her hand hanging at her side, and they walked through the office area openly like this, leaving stunned employees behind as they entered the elevator.

When they reached the first floor, their hand-in-hand, intimate scene still drew many surprised and shocked looks.

Neither of them paid attention to these stares and they walked straight out of the law firm's entrance.

Rachel had driven here, and their cars were parked in different spots, some distance apart.

She was planning to visit Louie at the hospital tomorrow, so leaving her car here would be inconvenient. She discussed with Benjamin where to eat dinner, then they would each drive there separately.

She walked to her car, placed her hand on the door, and it unlocked automatically.

But the car door made a small, strange sound.

At this moment, dusk was being gradually swallowed by the horizon, the lights had just come on, and the evening breeze still carried a hint of coolness.

This abrupt sound seemed particularly jarring in this atmosphere.

Rachel frowned. Just as she pulled open the car door to check the situation, her phone in her bag suddenly chimed, immediately pulling her attention and thoughts away.

Because of the message's importance, she momentarily ignored the car door's untimely sound and took out her phone from her bag.

[Don't drive your Porsche under any circumstances! Over an hour ago, someone Nancy bribed tampered with your car's brakes. The brake line has been worn down and will cause brake failure.

Also, that person installed a tracking device under the middle of the passenger seat in your car.]

Tampered with the brakes?

A tracking device?

Someone she bribed!

Rachel froze, a flash of confusion crossing her face. She felt chills all over, and even a strange coldness seemed to rise from the soles of her feet, instantly rushing to the top of her head.

Soon, her face turned cold and stern.

Clearly, this was meant to kill her.

No wonder there was a strange sound when she opened the car door just now.

It was very abrupt.

But her car doors were sensor-activated - the handle only popped up after unlocking.

She frowned, her eyes falling on the tracking device again.

What was the purpose of this tracking device?

Was it just to see what road section she was on and what time she would die in a car accident?

How absurd, how vicious!

Time after time - she could barely remember how many times Nancy had tried to kill her.

Nancy sure had some skills!

She could tamper with her car so quietly.

Without hesitation, she got into the driver's seat, leaned over, and reached under the passenger seat to feel around.

Sure enough, she found something about the size of a coin in the middle.

She pulled it out and examined it for a few seconds, sneering sarcastically.

The tracking device had no switch—it looked like the switch was on a phone app.

Since she knew the brakes had been tampered with, there was no way she would drive this car.

She first took out the dashcam and rewound it to over an hour ago. Due to the limited angle, she only saw a black corner of clothing in the footage from over an hour ago, but didn't see the person's figure or face.

She dragged the progress bar back and carefully examined the clothing corner and an arm that appeared in the footage.

While she was watching, Benjamin had already walked over.

He had parked his car near the exit and had been waiting for her car to come out. After waiting several minutes with no sign of it, he walked back in.

Seeing her sitting in the driver's seat with the door still open, he asked in confusion, "What's wrong?"

The streetlight was blocked by him. Rachel looked up, saw it was him, and didn't hide anything.

She held up the tracking device in her hand. "I found this in my car. Someone's been in my car. I'm worried the car might have been tampered with. I'm thinking about whether to call a tow service and have it checked out."

The brake tampering wasn't easy to spot. Without someone confirming it, she couldn't just come out and say it.

Otherwise, it would be hard to explain.

Of course, she couldn't be too detailed about finding the tracking device either.

Benjamin's face darkened as he took the tracking device. "Nancy?"

Rachel pressed her lips together and handed him her phone. "The dashcam has limited range and didn't capture much, but it doesn't look like her to me. But besides her, I can't think of anyone else who would have such hatred and murderous intent toward me."

Benjamin took it and looked, his brow tightly furrowed.

After watching, he took a deep breath and looked up at the surveillance camera not far away. "Don't call the repair shop yet."

This concerned Rachel's personal safety. Now they had surveillance footage and dashcam recordings as evidence that someone intended to harm Rachel.

The best way to handle this was naturally to call the police.

After speaking, he took out his phone and called Henry from the criminal investigation department.

He also mentioned the tracking device.

Once the police got involved, this matter could easily be filed as a case.
