Chapter 96 Epic battle
Aloria
The ground shakes beneath my feet as we surge forward, adrenaline coursing through my veins. The battle cry ripples through the air, and I feel it resonate deep within me. I am a part of this moment, a part of this fight, and I won’t hold back. Muscles tense, I push off the ground, my legs propelling me faster than the others. The trees blur past me, and the world shrinks to a narrow focus… my target, the enemy before me.
I block out the fact that people will die, enemies as well as allies, maybe even friends… I have to block it out.
The first clash is brutal. I leap into the fray, a blur of fur and fury, and my claws find purchase in the flank of a soldier from my uncle’s army. He howls in pain, and I spin away just as another warrior lunges at me. My instincts kick in; I dodge to the side, using my speed to evade his grasp. The scent of sweat and blood fills the air as I weave through the chaos, striking where I can.
The sounds of battle surround me… howls, snarls, the clash of teeth and claws. I can see River leading our warriors, his presence magnetic as he draws the attention of our foes. I catch glimpses of his powerful frame as he tears through the enemy, a whirlwind of strength and focus. But there’s no time to dwell on him; I need to find my own path through this onslaught.
A soldier steps into my line of sight, a gnarled expression on his face as he readies his weapon. I dart forward, my speed blurring the edges of reality, and I leap, my claws raking across his chest. He stumbles back, shock replacing the anger in his eyes. I’m already moving on, searching for the next target, my heart racing as I dive into the thick of it.
I see Kellan staying close like a shadow.
The battle unfolds in waves. One moment, we’re pushing forward, our pack roaring with determination, and the next, the tide turns. I can feel the shift… the enemy is regrouping, their ferocity peaking as they begin to overwhelm us. I fight with everything I have, but it’s hard to ignore the feeling that we’re losing ground.
As I weave between combatants, I catch sight of Kellan again, his face set in grim determination as he fights back-to-back with a fellow warrior. I can see the exhaustion in his movements, and it sends a jolt of fear through me. We can’t lose anyone; not now, not when we’re so close to reclaiming our territory.
I push myself harder, my body a machine fueled by desperation and fury. I dodge a swipe from another soldier, my instincts guiding me as I counter with a swift kick that sends him sprawling. But for every enemy I take down, more spring up to take their place. The numbers are against us, and I feel the tide of despair creeping in.
Just as I’m about to make another move, I hear a familiar voice… a battle cry that sends shockwaves through the air. River’s voice. I turn, my heart racing. He’s in the thick of it, surrounded by enemies, but he stands tall, a beacon amidst the chaos. I see him take down two soldiers with one powerful swipe, but then he stumbles, a glimmer of uncertainty flashing across his face.
“No!” I shout, my voice lost in the cacophony, but I can feel the urgency clawing at my chest. I rush towards him, weaving through the fray, but the enemy is relentless. They swarm around him, and I see the moment when he realizes he’s outnumbered. I push harder, desperation fueling my speed as I leap over fallen bodies, my heart pounding in my ears.
Suddenly, the air shifts. A loud crack of thunder echoes through the clearing, and I glance up, the sky darkening ominously. Rain begins to pour, soaking us in an instant, but it’s not the rain that catches my attention. It’s the flash of lightning that strikes the ground nearby, illuminating the chaos around us.
The storm is building, and with it, I feel a surge of energy course through me. I glance back at River, and my heart sinks. He’s surrounded, fighting valiantly, but I can see the weariness setting in. The enemy is pressing him harder now, and I know I have to reach him.
I sprint forward, faster than I’ve ever moved, cutting through the enemy lines with precision. My muscles burn, but it’s a familiar ache; I push through it, fueled by the need to protect him. The world around me fades as I focus solely on River, my vision narrowing to him and the looming threat surrounding him.
“River!” I scream again, my voice finally breaking through the noise as I draw closer.
In that moment, another bolt of lightning strikes, and I watch in awe as it arcs down from the sky, illuminating River in a blinding flash as it seems to be sucked into him. The energy crackles around him, and I see the soldiers nearest him stumble back, shock etched across their faces. He raises his arms, and the light envelops him, a powerful surge that seems to pulse with life.
I can’t breathe. The sight of him, glowing with energy, brings a wave of hope crashing over me. I push even harder, the ground beneath me pounding with every step. The enemy is too close; I can’t let them take him.
But just as I reach the edge of the fray, a heavy weight crashes into me from the side. I go down, the wind knocked from my lungs, and I struggle to regain my footing. I twist, fighting against the grip of an enemy warrior.
