Chapter 30 An ice queen
Aloria
With one final, steadying breath, I push open the grand double doors, the sound echoing like thunder in the silence that swallows the space. The queen's chamber is magnificent, adorned with opulent golds and silvers that glimmer under the light of countless candles. The air is thick with the scent of jasmine and something else… something sharp and clinical. I step inside, my heart hammering in my chest, my senses heightened as I take in the figure before me.
She stands with her back to me, regal and poised, her long, dark hair cascading down her back like a waterfall of night. The silken gown she wears is a brilliant white, accentuating her slender form and delicate features. She turns slowly, and I catch the glint of her piercing blue eyes, cold as ice and sharp as daggers. There’s an elegance to her, a grace that commands respect, but as I meet her gaze, a chill runs down my spine. This isn’t the warmth of a mother I had imagined; it feels more like the presence of an ice queen… distant and untouchable.
“Ah, so you are the lost princess,” she says, her voice smooth yet devoid of the tenderness I yearn for. “Aloria… my daugther.” Her lips curve into a smile, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. I find myself stepping back, caught off guard by the chill that seems to radiate from her.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” I reply, my voice steady despite the fluttering in my stomach. “I have returned.”
“Indeed.” She steps closer, her gaze assessing me with an intensity that makes my skin prickle. “Ain’t you a pretty little one.”
I swallow, “Thank you.”
“You’ve arrived at a most opportune time.” She says, “Our kingdom is on the brink of forging an alliance with the neighboring realm of Eldoria. Your presence here could aid our efforts immensely.”
I blink, momentarily thrown off by the sudden shift in focus. “Alliance?” I echo, my mind racing. “But I… I just arrived. I thought I would be welcomed back, given time to adjust.”
The queen’s expression remains inscrutable, her gaze unwavering. “We do not have the luxury of time, Aloria. You are part of a greater plan now, a pivotal piece in our strategy. Your return must not be seen as a mere homecoming but as an opportunity to unite our kingdoms. Eldoria harbors a powerful Lycan pack, and their king is keen on strengthening ties with us. Your heritage gives us leverage.”
I take a step back, my heart sinking at the realization. “I understand the need for alliances, but I was hoping for a moment to reconnect… to learn about my family, my past…”
“Family is a luxury,” she interrupts, her tone sharp. “What you need to focus on is the future of our realm. We cannot afford to be vulnerable, not with enemies still lurking beyond our borders. You must accept your role as the princess, not just in name, but in action.”
Her words hang between us, heavy and suffocating. I feel the walls close in around me, the grandiosity of the chamber suddenly feeling like a gilded cage. This isn’t the homecoming I envisioned. The warmth of the castle, the excitement of the maids, all of it feels like a cruel facade. I am not just Aloria; their daughter… I am a tool, a pawn in a game I barely understand.
“But I don’t know how to be a princess,” I protest, my voice faltering. “I’ve only ever been… Dust. Just a girl without a wolf. How can I help you forge this alliance?”
The queen regards me with a look of disappointment, I do not want to disappoint her. “You will learn, Aloria. I will see to it. But first, you must attend the council meeting tonight. Your presence will be essential. They need to see you, to know that you have returned. It will bolster their faith in our future.”
I swallow hard, feeling the weight of her expectations. “And if I fail?”
“Failure is not an option,” she replies, her voice cool and unyielding. “You are a Lycan princess. You must rise to the occasion.”
I nod slowly, the fire in my heart dampened by her icy demeanor. But what can I really do, with River gone, this is all I have, “Very well, Your Majesty. I will do my best.”
As I turn to leave, I can’t shake the feeling that I’m stepping into a role I was never prepared for, a game I don’t yet understand. The queen’s words echo in my mind, and I realize that my journey is only just beginning. The path ahead is fraught with uncertainty, but I must find a way to navigate it… both for myself and for the kingdom that has been waiting for me.
