Chapter 106 Leaving the city behind
Aloria
The sun dips lower in the sky, its golden rays casting a warm, soft light over the courtyard of the castle. I stand on the steps, heart racing with a mix of excitement and melancholy. Today, we leave the Capital behind, returning to our pack, and I can hardly contain the thrill of adventure bubbling within me, I miss my life and the people there. Yet, the thought of saying goodbye to my family wraps around my heart like a tight vine, bittersweet and heavy.
My parents stand before me, their eyes filled with a blend of pride and worry. My mother reaches out, brushing her fingers along my cheek, her touch both familiar and comforting. “My dear Aloria,” she breathes, her voice soft yet firm, “you have grown into a remarkable woman, a strong knight and a true Luna. I couldn’t be prouder of who you’ve become.”
I lean into her touch, allowing myself a moment of vulnerability. “I’ll be back soon to visit, I promise. I need to help our pack grow stronger,” I assure her, my voice steady, even as my heart trembles at the thought of leaving her side.
“Just remember to take care of yourself,” my father adds, stepping forward, his presence commanding yet filled with warmth. “You have a destiny, my daughter, but it’s your life to live. Don’t forget to enjoy it along the way.”
“Father, I will. I promise,” I reply, feeling the weight of his gaze. I can see the love and concern etched upon his face, a reflection of my own fears.
“Watch over her, River,” my father turns to my mate, his voice low yet filled with authority. “She is everything to us, and I trust you to keep her safe.”
I glance at River, standing tall and resolute beside me. His presence radiates strength, a quiet confidence that draws me in. He meets my father’s gaze, the bond of loyalty and respect palpable between them. “I would give my life to protect her,” River replies, his voice steady and unwavering. The enormity of his words fills the air, wrapping around us like a promise, a vow that resonates deep within my soul.
My heart swells, a mixture of pride and joy flooding through me. I reach for River’s hand, intertwining our fingers, the warmth of his grip grounding me amidst the swirl of emotions. I know in my heart that we are stronger together, and that he will always stand by my side.
“Aloria!” Arly’s voice jolts me from my reverie. He dashes up the steps, his face flushed with excitement. “Can we come to visit you soon? I want to show everyone in the pack my new sword!”
I can’t help but laugh at his enthusiasm, the sound bubbling up like a melody. “Yes, little warrior. But remember, we must be careful. A knight must always be responsible.”
Arthenon, more reserved but equally eager, joins us, his eyes shining with admiration as he grips his wooden sword. “Are you really a knight now, Aloria? Like in the stories?”
I kneel down to their level, my heart overflowing with love for my brothers. “I am, but being a knight means more than just titles and armor. It means being brave, helping others, and always standing up for what is right.”
“Just like you helped everyone in the country,” Arly bursts out, his excitement infectious. “You’re so cool, Aloria.”
I chuckle, ruffling his hair. “And one day, you will be too. You both have the spirit of a lycan king within you.”
As I stand, I take a deep breath, allowing myself to absorb the moment. My heart is full of hope, but the parting is still heavy. I step forward, wrapping my arms around my parents once more, holding them tightly. “I love you both so much. Thank you for believing in me.”
“We’ll always believe in you, Aloria,” my mother whispers, her voice laced with emotion. “You are our heart.”
As we break apart, I wipe away the tears threatening to spill. I turn back to River, who watches me with a knowing smile. “It’s time,” he says gently, his voice a calming presence amidst the storm of emotions swirling inside me.
I nod, my heart racing with anticipation. With my brothers in tow, wanting to wave us off, we walk towards the area outside the castle where our loyal warriors are already preparing the wagons. The air is filled with the sounds of hooves stamping and the rustle of leather. Kellan stands near the horses that are drawing the wagons, his ever-watchful gaze scanning the surroundings, ensuring our safe departure.
“Are we ready?” he asks, his tone serious yet light.
“As ready as we’ll ever be,” I respond, my voice steady. I glance back at my family one last time, their faces a mix of pride and love. I promise silently that I will return, that this is not a goodbye, but a see you soon.
As I look around making sure we have everything River takes my hand, grounding me in the moment, I look at him. There’s an unspoken understanding between us, a bond that has only deepened since the day we fought side by side.
With a nod, he starts moving, and together we lead the way, leaving the castle and the Capital behind as my brother cheers and waves along with the citizens we pass. The sun continues to dip, casting a warm glow over the path ahead, and I know that whatever lies in our future, we will face it together.
“Are you ready for this next adventure?” River asks, his voice low, filled with excitement.
“More than ever,” I reply, the thrill of the unknown pulsing through my veins. “Together, we can conquer anything.”
As we walk away, the sounds of the Capital fade, replaced by the rustle of trees and the call of the wild. My heart beats in sync with the rhythm of the warriors behind me, a melody of hope and determination. It feels good to be going home.
