Chapter 101 Taking the castle
Aloria
The jubilant cheers of our people fade into a distant echo as we stride toward the stone arches of the castle looming ahead. Each step reverberates with purpose, the heavy doors swinging open as if welcoming us back to the heart of the kingdom. The air is electric, crackling with anticipation, and I can feel the weight of history pressing down on us as we prepare to reclaim what was lost.
River walks beside me, his energy palpable, a fierce fire that ignites my own resolve. I glance at her, the fierce spark in his eyes matching the storm that rages within me. We’ve fought for this moment, and now it’s here, the culmination of our struggle reflected in the faces of the loyalists that gather to greet us.
As we cross the threshold, the great hall unfurls before us, a grand tapestry of our lineage. I take in the familiar banners, the intricate carvings that tell tales of battles won and lost, each one a reminder of the legacy we inherit. My heart swells with pride, and I can’t help but smile at the soldiers and servants who stand at attention, their expressions a mix of hope and apprehension.
“Loyal subjects of the Lycan Kingdom,” I call out, my voice steady and strong as it fills the vast space. “Today, we reclaim our home. Today, our true king returns!”
The crowd erupts into cheers once more, and I can see the flicker of life returning to their eyes, the burden of fear lifting. My father steps forward, a regal presence even after all he has endured. The lines of worry etched on his face soften as he meets my gaze, and for a moment, I see the strength of a king reborn.
“Those who wish to remain loyal to our cause will be rewarded,” he declares, his voice booming as he addresses the assembly. “I ask you now, soldiers and servants of this castle, will you pledge your allegiance to your rightful king?”
A murmur ripples through the crowd as they exchange glances, uncertainty mingling with a flicker of hope. I can feel the tension in the air as they weigh their options, and then one brave soldier steps forward, dropping to one knee.
“I swear my loyalty to the King!” he proclaims, his voice unwavering.
“Me too!” another calls out, and one by one, the soldiers and servants follow suit, kneeling in a show of allegiance. I feel a surge of pride wash over me, the warmth of unity wrapping around us like a protective cloak. This is our moment, the dawn of a new era.
As the last of the loyalists kneels, I turn my gaze toward the grand staircase that leads to the upper levels of the castle. I can’t shake the thought of my aunt, the former queen, and the tyrant she supported. The echoes of her betrayal linger in the air, a bitter reminder of the past. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what must come next.
“Find my aunt,” I instruct one of the guards, my voice steady but resolute. “We must confront her.”
As the soldier scurries off, River steps closer, his brow furrowed with concern. “Do you think she’ll listen?”
I shake my head, a determined glint in my eye. “She cared more for her power than her family. She will choose her own fate.”
Moments later, the guard returns, leading my aunt down the grand staircase. The once-proud woman appears diminished, her regal attire now a shadow of its former glory. A flicker of disdain crosses her features as she surveys the crowd, and I can see the contempt she holds for us, for the kingdom she thought she could control.
“Aloria,” she sneers, her voice dripping with venom. “You’ve returned to claim what? A kingdom in ruins?”
“Not in ruins, Aunt,” I reply, my voice steady. “But one that will rise again, free from your grasp.”
The tension in the room thickens, and I can feel the eyes of the loyalists on us, waiting for the next move. “You have a choice,” I continue, my heart racing. “You can join your husband in prison, or you can leave this kingdom. We will send you to a small castle on a remote island, where you’ll have a staff to care for you. But you will no longer rule here or anywhere else.”
Her eyes narrow, and I can see the gears turning in her mind. “You think I will go quietly? You think I will abandon my rightful place?”
“This is not your rightful place,” River interjects, stepping forward with a fierce determination. “Your reign is over. The kingdom has chosen a new path, one that doesn’t include you.”
A flicker of vulnerability passes across my aunt's face, but it is quickly replaced by defiance. “I will not be banished like a common criminal,” she sneers, her voice rising. “I will fight for what is mine!”
“Your fight is over,” I say firmly, my heart pounding. “You made your choices, and now you must live with the consequences. Will you accept this fate, or will you continue to defy the will of the people?”
Silence stretches between us, and I can see the weight of her decisions crushing her spirit. Finally, she takes a deep breath, a resigned look crossing her face. “Very well,” she says flatly. “I will go to the island. But mark my words, Aloria, this is not the end.”
I nod, my heart heavy with the knowledge of what she has lost. “It is the end of your tyranny,” I remind her. “And the beginning of something greater.”
As my aunt is led away, I turn to River, who stands beside me, his eyes filled with understanding. “It’s done,” I say, my voice steady despite the tumult of emotions swirling inside me.
“Now we can begin to rebuild,” he replies, a fierce determination shining in her gaze.
I look out at the assembled loyalists, their faces a mixture of relief and anticipation. “We will not only rebuild but thrive,” I declare, my voice rising above the din. “Together, we will forge a future where no one suffers under the weight of tyranny again!”
The room erupts into cheers once more, a wave of energy that surges through me. I can feel the electric pulse of hope and determination flowing around us, a promise of what is to come.
As the celebrations begin, I turn to River, my heart swelling with gratitude. “We did this. You and me, together.”
He smiles, a fierce light in his eyes. “And we’ll continue to do it. But first, let’s get your family here, so we can take our rightful places.”
I nod, my heart racing at the thought of my mother and brothers. “I want them here with us,” I say, urgency lacing my voice. “And the Kingdom needs its queen.”
“Then I’ll send a small group of warriors back to the pack,” River confirms, his determination unwavering. “They will bring them here, and once they arrive, your family and the Kingdom will be whole again.”
As I watch him rally the warriors, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride swelling within me. This is just the beginning of our new chapter, a journey where we will reclaim not only our kingdom but our place in history. Together, we will rise, united in purpose and strength.
And as I look around at the faces of the people, I know that the storm we faced has only made us stronger, and the future is bright with promise. The kingdom will rise again, and we will be at the forefront of that resurgence.
