The Road to Cold Resolve

The Road to Cold Resolve

The car glided through the city streets in silence. In order to escape the restaurants glittering exterior and critical gaze Alexander had turned on the engine creating a soft rumble beneath us. My body sagged as I sat in the passenger seat my mind spinning in a frantic tornado of suffering and embarrassment.
The heat of his embrace and the solace of his hushed words had temporarily softened the sharp edges of my suffering but the pain of Liams denial and the humiliation in front of others still blazed brightly.
I gazed out the window where the city lights mirrored my mental confusion by fading into specks of color.
My face was still streaming with hot fresh tears that were making their way through the dried salt of previous sobs. No longer were they merely sad tears they were tears of deep hurt of a painful betrayal that had been brutally reopened. I had been rejected by Liam. In front of everybody.
“Who the hell are you?” was the cruel derisive word that kept repeating in my mind. Looking at me the woman he had been with for years and to whom he had made a lifelong commitment he had dismissed me as though I were an outsider a crazy person or just a bother.
Becca had also laughed. A new wound and a reminder of their common cruelty was that tinkling malevolent sound which was laced with triumphant glee. It made me feel very depressed.
I felt a heavy debilitating sadness that made it difficult for me to breathe. It had all been for nothing—the years of silent suffering the slow excruciating process of trying to recover from his abandonment.
The old wounds had just been torn open salted and then a fresh excruciating layer of public humiliation was applied. It was as though I had been completely erased from his life and rejected once and for all. Every painful detail of the scene in the restaurant was replayed in my head.
Quiet murmurs interested looks and the abruptly stopped clinking of glasses. A dark unsightly stain on the immaculate tablecloth the wine spilling was the ideal metaphor for the chaos he had caused in my life.
His disinterested look his contemptuous gesture and his completely icy eyes. Even the decency to pretend to recognize him and tell a courteous lie had eluded him.
He had cruelly and simply denied me. A metallic bitter taste filled my mouth as the thought twisted my stomach. The thought was agonizing destroying every treasured memory every shared laugh and every murmured promise.
How could someone be so heartless? Had he ever really loved me or had I only been a useful accessory a stopgap measure until someone better someone richer someone better suited to his ambitious plans came along? Now they all seemed to be lies fragile illusions that had crumbled in the face of his actual characters stark reality.
Then the sadness started to change slowly sneakily. It started to twist solidify and change into something completely different but it didnt vanish. hatred. I started to feel a cold burning hatred that pushed the tears away and replaced the pain with a fierce icy resolve.
He was someone I detested. I detested Liam because of his brutality treachery and complete indifference to my emotions. I detested Becca because she was arrogant complicit and laughed maliciously
I detested them both for making me feel inferior unimportant and insane as well as for the public humiliation they had caused me. It was a strong euphoric force hatred. I didnt feel helpless like I had for so long instead I felt powerful. It was a weapon a shield and a flaming ember that would eat everything in its path.
My heart which had been so delicate and exposed started to harden and surround itself with a protective layer. My face was now filled with cold tears not from grief but from a renewed sense of resolve.
I reflected on the years I had spent attempting to get better put the past behind me and start over. The quiet evenings spent fighting my demons the self-help books and all the therapy. All of it had been an effort to move on forgive and heal.
Now though it seemed like a pointless endeavor in the face of his ruthless denial. It appeared as though forgiving him was a sign of weakness and submission to his brutality. No. No more. A thought froze in my head clear and cold. I wouldnt simply step aside.
I would not simply recover. I would get up. I would overcome this not only for myself but also to demonstrate to him. To demonstrate both of them. that I was not unimportant. that I wasnt a crazy person.
I was not a disposable object. Id get stronger. wealthier. Greater strength. He would have to admit my existence because I would create something so amazing and indisputable.
I would have to change his perception of me from the broken woman he had left behind to one of a formidable force. I would also make sure he remembered my identity precisely on that day. No I wouldnt pursue vengeance in the petty sense.
My success my indisputable victory and a silent but potent testament to his enormous error would be my retaliation. Even though the city lights were still streaming past the window they appeared to be reflecting a different type of fire in my eyes.
Even though there was still sadness a dull ache beneath the surface this new chilling resolve overshadowed it. I took a deep trembling breath and briefly closed my eyes.
The weight of my metamorphosis and my unsaid thoughts filled the cars air. On the console Alexanders hand lightly touched mine. His touch was comforting warm and a silent bulwark against my inner turmoil.
He remained silent perhaps sensing the deep change taking place inside of me. He just drove his presence a silent solace that gave me time to think to mourn to harden.
I looked straight ahead at the road as I opened my eyes. Everything felt different on the way back to the mansion. It was more than just a drive home it was a voyage toward a fresh start and a new mission forged in the furnace of hatred and heartache.
At last the tears had ceased. My eyes were clear my face was dry but they had a glint of danger a cold fire that foretold a reckoning. Something strong and dormant inside of me had b
een reawakened by Liam. He would also come to regret it.
