Chapter 89 Chapter 89
Chapter 89 Chapter 89
Mirelle’s POV
The plan to rescue Hagath had begun, and Makus too, because there was no way in hell I was going to leave him alone in that prison.
‘How is Erasmus? How is he holding up?’ Corlin asked.
‘He is fine, holding up just fine. Pelisy is taking care of him.’
‘Good.’
‘And you, Corlin? After everything…..’
‘I have mourned, beaten up myself. That time is over. Right now my focus is on getting the Seelie Court out of here and making Eliath wish he was never born.’
We both agreed on that.
The plan was to get Hagath on the day of his execution, just before he was taken to the gallows. We would use the crowd as a distraction and get him the hell out of there. Then, with the commotion of Hagath being rescued, we would get into the palace, get Makus, and get out without anyone knowing.
So we would be split into two teams.
I just hoped this worked.
In the meantime, I was given a place to sleep. Eragon dropped my bag on the bed, then looked at me.
‘I am so glad you are alive and well, princess.’
‘I am glad you are too. Sorry about Kraig.’
‘Thank you, princess,’ he said. ‘You are okay?’
‘Yes. I am good,’ I said.
He looked around, nodded his head, and left.
I had nothing to do, so I decided to explore the rebel camp. Corlin said they were deep in the mountains.
I walked out and went deeper into them. The rebels had built a whole world down here. It was unbelievable.
I could see both young and old moving around. While some trained with swords in an open clearing between the rocks, others sharpened weapons or carried supplies around.
Then I noticed children too. That broke my heart.
I hated Eliath even more.
‘A lot of them have lost their families and friends,’ someone said beside me.
I jumped in fright.
‘Sorry for scaring you, princess.’
The fae girl beside me looked a bit familiar, but I could not place where I had seen her. She noticed the confusion on my face.
‘I am one of Pelisy’s crew. My name is Fiona,’ she said.
‘Oh…. I am sorry I didn’t recognize you.’
‘No, it’s okay. How is she?’
‘Pelisy is good. Doing well.’
‘Glad she is. Glad she escaped. She would have really wanted in on this though.’
‘You are right.’
‘I will be following you to rescue the prince consort and the general. I want you to know that I am glad you insisted on it. A lot of our people are losing hope, but this would encourage them. The Seelie Court is brutal. Young boys and young men are forcefully used to extract the enhancers. My younger brother is one of them.’
‘I am so sorry,’ I said remorsefully, my heart breaking for her and her young brother.
‘It’s not your fault, princess. I can’t wait to take the bastard down.’
We both went silent for a minute.
My heart felt heavy.
I wished I had seen Eliath for who he truly was from the beginning. How could I have been so blind? And now he had taken over everything, gotten even more powerful with the enhancers our people broke their backs to get.
‘One day, princess, we will look back on this day and be glad we didn’t give up.’
I smiled softly at her.
‘I guess I will be seeing you later, princess.’ She bowed and walked away.
I took a deep breath.
Then a thought occurred to me.
I immediately went to Corlin’s office, only to find him busy.
‘Sorry!’
‘Damn it, Taliahtie. You don’t know how to knock?’
I covered my face with one of my hands and tried not to look at his naked ass.
‘I will come back,’ I said and shut the door in a hurry.
I went straight to my room, my face heating up from seeing my half-brother with a woman in his office. I closed the door and dropped onto the bed.
Then my thoughts began to spiral.
Thoughts of Drake.
I could not imagine how he might be feeling right now. He must have thought he had lost me. But I could not leave here yet. I owed it to these people to be here. I just hoped we would be able to get rid of the soldiers at the veil.
I lay on my side to sleep and another thought crossed my mind.
Isolde would be out of her mind searching for me at the moment. Maybe it was better this way. The real Mirelle was gone, and me going back would not bring her back.
‘You had something to tell me last time before you rudely interrupted me,’ Corlin said as I put a small knife in my boots, ready for the rescue mission.
‘Don’t you have a room?’
‘Where I do my business is none of your business. You were the one walking around.’
‘Whatever. What I wanted to talk about was the enhancers. We need to get them.’
‘We are already working on a plan for it…. Be careful, Taliahtie. Get in, get out. No confrontation. Once we get the enhancers, we will be able to confront them. But for now, don’t.’
‘Noted. When will you call me Elisa?’
‘When hell freezes over,’ he said.
‘Ah ah ah,’ I said and rolled my eyes.
We were ready to move.
Eragon would lead the team I was on, and Fiona would lead the other team.
‘Be careful out there, and come back no matter what,’ Corlin said as he turned to the rest of the team.
‘We will,’ I said, replying for all of us.
Nobody was dying today.
Not on my watch.
I turned toward all of them.
‘Call me Mirelle, not Taliahtie. For now, I want my identity to remain hidden.’
We walked out of the mountain with hoods covering our faces. We stepped through the hidden exit, fresh air hitting my face.
I took a deep breath as we made our way out of the Dead Forest.
