Chapter 100 Chapter 100
Chapter 100 Chapter 100
Drake’s POV
I didn’t see the fist coming towards me. It flew so fast, I could not dodge it in time.
“You have got to get off your ass, Drake. We need you!” Sabrina screamed at me.
I held my cheek, then licked the blood away from my lips. I already looked homeless. The busted lips and red bruises on my cheeks would only make me look worse. My werewolf genes, however, were already doing their thing. I was healing far faster than a human ever could.
Sabrina had found my new hiding spot. I thought nobody would. But the fact that location spells existed meant there was no place for me to hide.
“You need to come home.”
Home?
I didn't know where home was anymore. The only person that mattered to me was gone.
“Are you listening to me? I am not leaving here without you. Have you forgotten our deal? When the fuck are you going to fulfill your end of the bargain? Hmm?”
“I already spoke with Hank about it. I didn’t leave you hanging, Sabrina.”
“You are the Lycan King. The deal was made with you. The council is not taking Hank seriously. They would take you seriously, especially now that you have the Lycans at your beck and call,” she said. Then she continued, her voice softer. “Everyone is worried, Drake. Everyone.”
“I can’t... you have no idea what this feels like, Sabrina.”
“I don’t? I, of all people, understand. I lost my mate too, remember? What the hell, Drake?”
I felt like a bastard. Had I allowed myself to become so consumed by my own pain that I had forgotten others carried theirs as well?
I placed my hands over my face and dragged them down.
“I am so sorry... I...”
“Save it, Drake. Just...” She went quiet, her face tilting upwards. The only sounds were the wind and the chirping of crickets. I had chosen a tree in a small forest to sleep in this time.
“I know how overwhelming the pain can be. It almost destroyed me. I didn't look forward to the next day. I wished for my own death every day. I wished it was me instead of him. And I almost ended it all, Drake. The death of a mate is the worst thing ever. I know that.” She hit her chest hard. “It leaves a fucking hole in your soul. A hole that can never be filled for the rest of your life,” she said, her voice rough. “So I get this act. Honestly, I do. But... you need to find a way out of that abyss. I found a way. You can too.”
“I don't know how.”
“There are breathing, living people who love you, who want you back. You need to be around them right now, not in isolation. You just have to try, Drake. And Elisa would not want you to be like this.”
“Do you know what I regret the most?... It's the fact that I wasted so much time... so much time. Time I was supposed to spend with her. Just because I was so fucking stubborn. I hate myself for it. Most of all, I hate that I could not protect her.”
I sat heavily on the forest floor, my back resting against a tree. Sabrina quietly walked towards me and sat beside me.
“There was nothing you could have done, Drake. Playing the scene over and over in your head will not help. It changes nothing.”
I chuckled bitterly.
“I wish I could change the past.”
“If we could all rewrite the past, none of us would be carrying these scars,” she said.
I rested my head against the tree and stared at the sky. The moon was so bright tonight. I would have shifted, but my wolf had retreated so far into my mind since Elisa died that he didn't want to come out.
“I’m sorry about the punch. I just didn't know a faster way to snap you out of it. Drake, we are still being ostracized. We do not have the go-ahead to leave the desert. We need you back. Please.”
“I have been so self-centered, haven't I? I am sorry.”
I closed my eyes for a moment. I felt her stand up, then she stopped in front of me.
“Drake...” she called.
I opened my eyes and stared at her.
“I get it... you are grieving. But it's been months. Everyone misses you and wants you back. Also, as the Lycan King, you have left your seat vacant long enough. It's time to come home.”
She stretched her hand towards me.
I stared at it.
Was I ready to go back?
Did I want to go back?
I wasn't sure I wanted to.
“Drake... I promised everyone I would not come back without you.”
“I am so sorry. I can't,” I said, looking away.
“Fine. If you are not going back, then I am not going back either. From now on, I will be glued to your hip. Thank God I packed enough clothes.”
She sat on the forest floor and brought out an apple from her bag.
“Care for some?” she asked.
“Sabrina...” I said with a loud exhale.
“Don't 'Sabrina' me. I'm going nowhere. You had better get used to my presence. So... where do you sleep?”
She looked at me expectantly.
She was actually serious.
I pointed up towards the trees.
Her brows shot up.
“Really?”
I simply shrugged.
“I had to make do with what I had.”
“Sure. But there is a comfortable bed waiting for you somewhere,” she said.
“I'll pass. I am going to sleep. I advise you to do the same.”
I stood up from where I sat and walked towards the tree I slept in.
“Goodnight,” she said.
I didn't reply. I jumped and landed hard on the tree branch.
It took a while for me to fall asleep. I had not had a good night's sleep since I lost Elisa, and I didn't think I ever would again.
The pain woke me.
I had never felt anything like it before.
It felt like my whole body was on fire. I started to shake violently, then I fell from the tree, still convulsing.
Instantly, my wolf came alive after months.
"Drake!" I heard Sabrina shout my name.
It felt like my soul was being shredded to pieces. I arched my back off the ground and groaned in agony.
“Drake! What the fuck is wrong?”
“Mate,” my wolf said.
“What!” I groaned.
I did not know how long it lasted, I was going in and out of consciousness. Then, I began to feel the pain lessen and it slowly began to fade. I took deep breath after deep breath, trying to steady myself.
Then I remembered what my wolf had said while I was in pain.
“What did you say?”
“Mate. She is alive.”
My eyes widened.
There was no way she was alive.
I saw her buried.
“She is not,” I replied out loud.
“Drake... what the hell was that?” Sabrina asked, her voice heavy with fear, but I ignored her.
What my wolf had said was impossible.
“Can you not feel her?” he asked.
“You need to stop this. I saw her die…. Don't do this to me.”
“Just do it” my wolf growled.
I almost rebuked him again, then I thought; what was the worst that could happen anyway. So, I concentrated as hard as I could on the place inside me where our bond had once existed.
At first, there was nothing.
Then...
A thin white smoky line stretched toward someone.
The more I focused on the figure, the clearer the face became.
“Elisa!” I gasped.
“What is it, Drake?” Sabrina asked, pulling me out of my subconscious.
“It's Elisa... she's alive.”
Sabrina stared at me like I had completely lost my mind.
But I could feel her.
Our bond.
It was back.
She was alive. I was sure of it.
And I knew the first place she would go once she returned.
I guess Sabrina would have her wish fulfilled after all.
It was time to go back home.
