Jess’s POV
“Yes, get your butt down there and protect my dad” I gave Kieran a kiss before he walked along to the cliff to set up beside my dad. After a couple of minutes, I followed. Justin followed my lead and started to set up on the other side of me. I smiled at him as I pulled my gun out and started to set it up in its stand. Kieran handed me the roll that he had brought for me.
“Why did you bring me one?”
“The ledge looks rocky. I wanted to make sure that you were comfortable and that none of the rocks dug in and hurt you”
“You’re so sweet thank you” I unrolled the bed roll and set it out in front of my gun stand. I Must admit that the bed roll was a lot more comfortable than laying on the rocks. I sat on the roll as I started to load my gun.
“Hey Jess, can you please help me for a sec”
“Sure Justin, what’s up?”
“I just want help setting up. I want to make sure that I am in a position so that I can move the gun easily. As well as being in a comfortable position so that I can shoot and aim with accuracy”
“Sure” I moved over to him and showed him how to set his roll up. So that it was flat but made sure that he kept some of it rolled up for extra support for his arms. I got him to lie down, and I laid next to him to assess his visibility and to make sure that he could move the gun around. I glanced over to see how dad was doing and noticed that Kieran was helping him out. I gave Justin a few tips on what positions he could use to make sure that he was always comfortable and able to switch positions without having to stay in the same on for hours. I remember that was how John had trained me all those years ago. Now I could stay in the same position for hours without moving. That took a lot of time and training though and time was something that we did not have. “So do you think that you understand all of the position and how to move into them without changing your view on the scene below?”
“Yeah. Thanks Jess you’re a good teacher”
“Thanks, I am usually the student. It’s hard having the role reversed so quickly. Are you ok if I go and carry on setting up?”
“Sure, thanks again”
I scooted back over to my pack and started to take out my ammo and set it. I set mine up beside me and Kieran so that I could reach it easily enough. I lay down on my matt and checked my vision to make sure that I could see the whole area where the ship had landed. I had a great view. Through my scope I could see the facial expression on the aliens that they had standing on duty. They looked bored. Not for long I thought to myself. Romeo sensed that we were going to be here for a while started to lie down.
“Hey Romeo, not yet wait I brought you a little gift too” Kieran reached into his pack again and pulled out a bag of raw hide dog treats and a blanket. He walked over and set the blanket up so that it was between the both of us. “Can you put your ammo on the other side of you Jess?”
“Sure” I reached over and moved my ammo while Kieran made sure that Romeo had a nice soft bed with all the rawhide chews placed in front of him. “Where and when did you get the chews?”
“I got them at the last town we went through before we got here. John told me all about Romeo. He even sent me a few pictures of the two of you together. So, I decided to grab some treats in case I needed to win him over”
“Thank you. You don’t need to win him over, but it will be making laying here a lot more pleasant for him” To make the point come across even more clearly Romeo laid down on the blanket and started to chew on one of the chews.
“Well, the dog looks like he is set for as long as this takes” John walked on to the ledge to check up on us.
“Yes, Kieran thought of him”
“Ok, are you all set up? We are about to head down there now”
“I think so. Dad, Justin are you both ok?”
“I am a think. Well as ready as I ever will be” Dad looked so scared
“I am ready to shoot some alien arse boss”
“Glad to hear it son. Ok we are going to enter the camp from the north so that we sneak up on them from behind”
“Ok boss we will have you covered”
“Thank you, Jess. Good luck”
“Right back at you sir” We all watched John walk away. “Ok guys let’s get into our places shall we. Dad and Kieran I want you to watch the North as that is where we are going to be attacking from. I want you to cover them. I am going to keep my eye on the ship. Justin, I want you to keep your attention on the south. I do not want any alien getting in to our camp as that is where mum and Amber are. If you need help give me a yell and I will help, ok?”
“No worries, Jess. I am sure that you will see anything coming out of the ship and starting to head south any way”
“Yeah, but even the best cannot catch everything”
“True. Don’t worry I will not let anything get to our camp”
“Thank you” I lay down and got myself in a comfortable shooting position. I had done this so many times that it came second nature to me.
