“Jess, hun, wait” Kieran called as she chased after me
Stopped and turned to face him “If they do not learn to push themselves, we will not win this war”
“You did not see their faces when you walked away from them. They were as disappointed in them self’s as much as you where”
“Good. They should be disappointed. I don’t want to talk about this right now. I just want to hand over to John and then zone out. I will tell John that I am unavailable this afternoon. Do you mind doing to training?”
“Not at all but what are you going to do?”
“I am going to take Romeo and go for a long run outside the compound”
“You look like you need it”
“Yeah, I do. I need to clear my head. I might flag on lunch and just go now. Will you be ok talking to John for me?”
“What kind of husband would I be if I said no? Go one bugger off and I will see you when you get back”
“Thank you. I love you. Come on Romeo” And off I ran. I ran past the group that I’d just been training without a second glance. I heard a few of them gasp and mutter about how I had the energy, but I zoned them out. I need time to think about what I was going to do, and I thought best when I was running. I was not taking it easy I could feel the burn running up my legs and pushed myself further and faster. Romeo stayed by my side the whole time. I started to slow down after I had been running for two hours. I slowed down and stopped by a river. I sat down on the bank and let Romeo have a drink of the water. I scooped water into my hands and poured it over my head and shoulder and then I also had a drink. “I am an idiot, Romeo. I keep forgetting that I have been training since I was 16. Of course, they are not going to be as strong as I want them to be straight away. That is why they need training” I sat for a few more minutes and then decided that I should head back to camp and face everyone. I was not happy with myself for running out. But then I also knew that it was something that I had to do. I turned back towards camp and started to run again. Romeo ran ahead of me now that he knew where we were going.
When I got back to camp, I realised that Kieran was doing trust exercises with everyone. He came running over to me as soon as he saw me. “Jess Hey. I was starting to get worried. We are just about to stop for dinner, and you did not even eat any lunch”
“Stop worrying. I am fine. I admit that I am hungry, but I am fine”
“Good. I will just finish up here and then you can hold my hand on the way to the muck hall”
“Ok Boss” I stood and watched Kieran as he finished up. He was a lot nicer to the group then I was. I pushed them whereas Kieran more encouraged them. When we finally had kids, I could see me as the mean parent and him as the nice one. I smiled as I watched him. There was a couple of time when I had to hold myself back from interfering. That would not have been fair of me. I had given him the job of running the group, so I just stood back and watched. After about half an hour Kieran told them to head to the muck room and walked over to me.
“What did John say about me doing a runner?”
“He was shocked that you had lasted this long”
“What?”
“He knows you Jess, he trained you. He knows your limits and how you need to escape. He told me that when you came back you would be fine and ready to train again”
“He was right too. I am amped and ready to go”
“I’m glad. I admit I love training new people, but I am nowhere near as good as you. I am too soft with them. Where you push people to do things that they had no idea they could do”
“Thank you. Now come on as after dinner we are having a team challenge. They all should be recovered now that they have been doing nonphysical training”
“It is when you say things like that, that makes me glad I am on your team”
“Yeah, only it’s not just us in the team and in this group challenge you have to have every member of your team over the finish line”
“That’s good. We have just been working on trust so now you are doing team building”
“Not just that. They will be pushing their teammates and in the process, they will be pushing themselves”
“I like the way you think Mrs Storm”
“My, thank you Mr Storm. Come on we better get back. Everyone will be waiting for us” I took his hand, and we ran to the muck hall. Everyone was sat down and talking among themselves. Kieran and I jogged straight to the front of the room.
“Hi everyone. I hope that you all had a nice afternoon’s worth of training. After dinner we are going to have a group challenge. The winning team will be the team that passes the finish line first. By team I mean every member of that team. You can run ahead and cross the finish line first but until the rest of your team crosses that line to join you, you have not won. The challenge will be the running and the obstacle course. You will need to run around the camp then you will complete the obstacle course. You are allowed to help each other as much as you want. If you have a member who cannot run any more. You are allowed to pick them up and carry them. You have all taken part in both of the challenges so over dinner you can try and come up with the best plan of attack of how you will win this challenge. Oh, I almost forgot. The group that wins this challenge can eat whatever they want all day tomorrow. After we have all finished eating, we will meet at the start line for the race. Now let’s eat” I took Kieran’s hand again and we went to get food as it was our teams turn to eat first.
