Chapter 38.
The nightclub was still a throng with all their visitors, Katya was playing the perfect hostess and loving every minute of it. She thrived on being the centre of attention and didn’t like it when the attention was diverted. Everyone was chatting in small intimate groups in one of the rooms of the inner chambers of the club. Katya was engrossed in a discussion with some of the other vampires. She was making an obvious attempt to flirt with anyone that would welcome it, knowing full well that Jacob was watching her. He stood across the room staring intensely at her. Watching her every move, rage building inside as she laughed and talked with the others. Isaac noticed him watching her and thought he should say something to Jacob about his situation.
“Go and talk to her.” Isaac said in a low voice so that no one else would hear. Jacob averted his eyes away from him. He couldn’t face looking at him at such a time. Jacob admired Isaac so much, he knew that Isaac was the favourite and that he really had no status. He felt insignificant and Katya only made him feel worse. “Are you going to spend eternity being afraid of her?” Isaac’s word caused Jacob to wince a little, he was right, but it stung none the less. Silently Jacob looked at Isaac, begging for some of his confidence to filter through to him. He would have spent eternity being afraid of her, standing at the other side of the room watching her.
“Remember, you are much stronger than she is. You were the last of us with both bloods. She is only half of what you are.” With that, Isaac patted Jacob on the shoulder before leaving him.
“You’re right. I’ll go talk to her.” A deep breath and he crossed the room. He walked over to where she was standing. But she ignored him. She continued talking with Alexis one of the other ‘new world’ vampires.
“Katya.” He reached out and touched her on the shoulder in a tender gesture. But still she ignored him and continued talking with Alexis.
“Katya, can I speak with you for a moment?” His voice began to shake a little and she could hear the weakness. She smiled knowing that this was the perfect opportunity to humiliate him and make her feel better about herself. She quickly turned to him and gave him a once over look.
“Not now Jacob, can’t you see I’m busy.” She snapped. And he stood there not quite knowing where to look or what to do. She waved her hand in dismissal. “Well, run along then.” And with that she turned back to the group and continued talking and laughing as if nothing had happened. Her objective was complete. He felt utterly humiliated. He could feel the beginning of anger stirring within him. But he didn’t act on it in front of everyone. He simply walked away defeated. Again.
It was getting close to dawn and everyone was beginning to retire. Katya had gone to her own room and was brushing her hair when Jacob burst in. She was shocked by his rude entrance and even more shocked when he spoke to her.
“How dare you humiliate me like that tonight?” His voice was filled with fury. But she merely laughed it off.
“I would have thought you would be used to it by now.” She turned away from him and continued brushing her hair.
“Don’t push me Katya!” He was almost shouting at her. She was surprised by the little outburst. She put the brush down on the dressing table and turned to him.
“Or what Jacob? You’ll go running to Caine like the little lap dog you are?” Her voice laced with venom.
“That’s enough!” He was getting angrier and angrier by the second. She’d hit a raw nerve and she knew it. She got up from the dressing table and walked over to him. She put her arm on his chest and stroked her hand down the side of his face.
“Face it Jacob, you’re a pathetic excuse for a vampire. Isaac will always be his favourite son, and you’ll never compare. You’re too weak.” She turned and walked away from him. She had dismissed him but he wasn’t finished.
“Remember you were created for me.”
She stopped and turned towards him. Her eyes narrowed and her tone changed, it was full of malice. “Yes, and if I had known then that I was going to be condemned to an eternity with you I would have asked Caine to finish me off when he had the chance.”
He stormed over to her and grabbed her arm throwing her against the wall. He grasped her throat with his hand and squeezed. She was shocked at this aggressive side to Jacob it was something she had never seen before. He leaned into whisper in her ear.
“Don’t underestimate me. I’m not as weak as you think.” He growled softly in her ear, licking her neck in a primitive gesture. He released her and walked towards the door. Just before exiting the room, he turned to her.
“Sweet dreams.” His voice was soft and sexy. She rubbed her neck and smiled at the transformation. She liked this side to him.
