Chapter 291
Chapter 291
Only after waking up and seeing him did Lisbeth's heart finally settle. She curled into Sebastian's arms, her eyelids too heavy to lift.
"Thank you…"
Sebastian stroked her hair and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. "Sleep."
---
Morning came.
Lisbeth and Sebastian went downstairs for breakfast together. After a night's rest, she felt much better. The terrifying images from last night had finally faded from her mind.
Sebastian drove Lisbeth to the hospital. The car had just pulled up to the entrance when his phone rang.
Lisbeth noticed his brow furrow slightly when he saw the number on the screen.
She looked away. She didn't look at the screen.
She didn't have a habit of prying into other people's phones. If Sebastian wanted to tell her, he would.
"Yeah, I know."
"I'm on my way."
Sebastian said a few words into the phone, then hung up and turned to Lisbeth. "You go ahead to the hospital. I have something I need to take care of. Call me if anything comes up."
"Okay."
Lisbeth got out of the car.
Sebastian's car stayed parked by the curb. Lisbeth had no choice but to turn and walk toward the hospital. Once she was through the front doors, she glanced back through the glass.
The car was pulling away down the street.
Lisbeth lowered her gaze.
Who was that unfamiliar number? She was curious, but she didn't ask. Because she trusted him.
---
Lisbeth spent the morning at the hospital with Megan. Megan had been so frightened last night that she'd developed a high fever today. She'd been sleeping fitfully. Raina and the caregiver were both there.
With four bodyguards stationed outside the door, the room had practically become the safest place in the building.
At noon, Lisbeth went out to get food.
Just as she reached the entrance, she saw someone familiar.
Qiana.
She was alone, dragging her luggage slowly toward the hospital exit. Lisbeth hesitated, about to go help, when she spotted Sebastian's car.
Noah stepped out and took the luggage from Qiana's hand, his manner warm. "Ms. Stewart, the place is ready for you. You can move in right away. If you need anything, just let us know. Mr. York said we'll take care of everything."
"Please thank him for me."
Qiana smiled. Graceful and beautiful. Even though she was thin, it didn't diminish the gentle, refined elegance she radiated.
"Is Sebastian usually very busy?"
"Fairly busy. Mr. York has to oversee operations, so his schedule's pretty packed."
Qiana got into the car. Noah drove off.
Only then did Lisbeth step out from behind the pillar. She walked to the cafeteria, bought some food, and sat down in a chair, staring into space. Her fingers traced idle patterns on the table.
She pulled out her phone and called Sebastian.
He answered quickly. "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
"Can't I call you if nothing's wrong?"
"No, you can. Of course you can."
Sebastian laughed softly.
Lisbeth's fingers lightly brushed the edge of the table. Unbidden, the image she'd seen at the hospital entrance replayed in her mind.
"Are you at the office?"
Sebastian made a sound of affirmation. "I have a meeting in a bit."
"Oh. Sounds busy." Busy enough to still have his assistant pick up Qiana. Busy enough to arrange a place for her to stay…
What kind of place?
A hotel? An apartment? Or… his place?
"It's not too bad. After the meeting, I'm pretty much free." Sebastian asked, "What about you? How's Megan doing today?"
"Not great. She's probably still shaken from yesterday. She's running a fever again and has been out of it all morning." Lisbeth sighed.
Sebastian paused in his work. "Don't worry. I'm sure she'll be okay."
"Yeah. Sebastian…"
"Hmm?"
Lisbeth hesitated. The words were on the tip of her tongue, but she swallowed them back down. Instead, she just said, "Work hard. Don't forget to take care of yourself."
"Don't worry."
Sebastian's voice was warm.
After hanging up, Lisbeth found Noah's number and called him.
He picked up quickly.
"Mrs. York, what can I do for you?"
"Where are you right now?"
"Dropping off a client."
A client…
Lisbeth's lips twitched. "Here's the thing. I went shopping and bought a bit too much. I didn't drive. I was wondering where you are. If you're nearby, could you come pick me up?"
"Of course. Just tell me where you are. Or send me your location."
Noah was sharp. He wasn't taking the bait.
Lisbeth's tone stayed light. "I'd feel bad bothering you. Just tell me where you are first. If you're close, I'll send you my location. If you're too far, I'll just call a cab."
Noah had just parked the car. At her words, he instinctively glanced at Qiana in the back seat. Finally, he sent Lisbeth his location.
"Mrs. York, am I close to you?"
"What a shame. You're pretty far. I already called a cab. You go ahead and do your thing."
Lisbeth hung up.
Noah stared at his phone, momentarily stunned. Mrs. York was so considerate.
He glanced discreetly at Qiana again.
He didn't know what Mr. York's relationship with this woman was. But Mr. York clearly went out of his way for her.
Surely Mr. York hadn't changed his mind.
---
Lisbeth saved the location and returned to the hospital room with the food.
Megan was still asleep. Raina sat beside her. Lisbeth set the food down.
"Lisbeth?"
Lisbeth snapped back to attention.
Raina frowned slightly. "What's wrong? You seem distracted. I called your name twice and you didn't even hear me."
"What did you need?"
Raina took over what Lisbeth had been doing. "You've been exhausted lately. You don't need to worry about Megan. I'll take care of her. You should go home and rest today."
Lisbeth hesitated, then finally nodded.
"Call me if anything happens."
"I will."
---
Lisbeth left the hospital and stood by the street, staring at the location on her phone.
A taxi pulled up in front of her.
Lisbeth got in. The driver asked, "Where to?"
Lisbeth pressed her lips together, staring at the location on her screen. She hesitated for a long time. The driver was starting to get impatient when she finally spoke.
"Wall Street."
In the end, she didn't go to the location. Some things didn't need to be dug into. What she found might not be what she wanted to know.
She'd rather wait for him to tell her himself.
---
Lisbeth got out on Wall Street. She'd planned to grab something to eat and then head home. Maybe the drug's effects hadn't fully worn off yet—she still felt weak and drained.
But then she looked up and saw someone.
Her blood ran cold.
That person…
It was the man who'd broken into the hospital room last night! She was sure of it. Even though she hadn't seen his face, those shoes—she'd never forget them.
