Chapter 71 Nothing to worry about anymore

Chapter 71 Nothing to worry about anymore
NANCY’S POV

Sleep evaded me that night. I kept tossing and turning without actually being able to fall asleep.

The main reason for my inability to sleep was none other than Mr Landon and his words to me earlier.

He had practically promised to keep me safe, and even though that should have been comforting for me, I didn’t actually feel comforted.

I felt more uneasy. For one, I didn’t know how he intended to do so. He had sounded so sure, so confident that it unnerved me.

Secondly, I knew Hudson, and that meant that I also knew how powerful he was. My Father wouldn’t be bending over and licking his feet if he didn’t have that much power over him.

In New Jersey, he was practically a king, having influence in high places, and I had once heard people gossip about him being a part of the mafia.

The mafia was the most revered, most feared organization ever, and hearing about them always made my heart quake. The fact that men like that, who shed blood without batting an eyelid, walked the earth like normal people, blending into crowds with calm smiles and tailored suits, made it even more terrifying.

I didn’t know if Mr. Landon had heard those rumours too, and the thought that he might be oblivious to it made me worried for his safety.

With a faint sigh, I turned on my side and stared at the faint glow of the moon that slipped through my window.

A strand of hair fell over my face, and it evoked a rush of memory from earlier, how he had stepped so close to me, the feel of his breath fanning my face, and his hands that had grazed my earlobe when he tucked my hair behind my ears,

I had moved back then because of the rush of emotions that overwhelmed me.

He had an effect on me that I couldn’t deny, and it had hurt when he stepped away from me, even though I made a move first.

I loved him, and each time that realization settled in my chest, it made it difficult to breathe.

When morning came, I was as exhausted as I could be, sporting dark rings under my eyes. My eyelids felt heavy too, and my eyes stung with fatigue.

“My goodness, did you even sleep at all?” Diana gasped when she saw me.

“You look like a raccoon that has been through hell.” She added, exclaiming with extra added effect.

“Good morning to you, too, Diana,” I mumbled, yawning as I dragged myself into the dining area.

“Trouble sleeping?”

“Way worse,” I smiled wryly at her, then dropped heavily into the nearest chair like a sack of grain.

For a brief second, Hudson’s face flashed through my mind like a horrific scene from a horror movie, and I shivered.

Diana must have noticed that because her face dropped with sympathy.

“You haven’t been resting well of late. At this rate, I fear you might end up breaking down one day…”

“I won’t break down,” I interrupted before she could finish, then added after a moment of contemplation, “I sure hope not.”

Diana smiled, but it only lasted for a second before her smile faltered.

“Speaking of nightmares, have you seen the news?”

“What news?” I asked, brows furrowing in confusion.

She reached for her phone and quickly read through.

“Mr Hudson was arrested for illegal possession of arms.”

“What?” I spat out, choking on my saliva.

Diana glanced at me, as though she had expected my reaction, then repeated herself.

It took a long time for me to digest the news, and even when I did, I still found it utterly unbelievable.

“He was arrested?”

“Yes,” she answered, then proceeded to explain why.

“They recovered weapons from one of his owned estates, and after investigation, the weapons were confirmed to have been purchased by him. According to this news, he was involved in a lot of illegal deals as well and was even accused of bribery and corruption.”

My heart began to pound in my chest, and I reached out, grabbing her phone from her so I could read through it myself.

It was exactly as she had explained.

“My God,” I gasped softly, clamping a palm over my mouth.

“Are you sure this is real?”

“It has to be,” Diana nodded. “It’s everywhere. A rumour can’t be so widespread.”

“But…”

This was Mr Hudson we were talking about, the one man in New Jersey who seemed infallible.

He didn’t just have influences; his reach expanded even beyond what the government could tame.

How was it possible that….that he had suddenly been arrested?

“Don’t worry, you are safe here.”

“He won’t get to you.”

No, it couldn't be…

It was impossible, right?

As much as my mind tried to link the possibility of what was happening right now to him, I just couldn’t bring myself to believe it.

At the same time, it was too coincidental.

Did things really happen this way?

It just didn't make sense that something like this had happened overnight.

Unless…

My heart skipped a beat.

The only logical answer for what was going on was the involvement of someone way more powerful than Mr Hudson.

Either that or he had finally met his loo.

But…There was only one person who had looked me in the eye and promised me that everything would be alright, that I would be safe, and now this…

I swallowed hard just as Diana’s voice broke into my thoughts.

“Nancy, you looked out of it for a minute there,” She said, peering at my face with concern.

“Yeah,” I forced a smile. “I’m just surprised, that’s all.”

“I am too,” she hummed in agreement. “It’s just so unexpected. Who would have thought?”

“Right?” I nodded in agreement.

A smile graced her lips for a moment.

“As surprising as it is, this is undeniably the best news I’ve heard in weeks.”

“It’s absolutely great news. Mr Hudson is captured; he will be too busy battling the investigative forces to even bother with you. You have nothing to worry about anymore.”
