Chapter 55 I want you

Chapter 55 I want you
JAXON'S POV

The headlights cut through the darkness, announcing the car's arrival before it even fully reached me.

I stood on the porch, waiting with my arms folded into each other, the exact posture I'd assumed for about thirty minutes now and hadn't bothered heading in since I returned.

Nathan had offered to go pick up the girls or wait with me, but I declined both and urged him to head on home.

It would be problematic if they saw us together, and we both wouldn't be able to explain what we were doing together in a way that wouldn't arouse suspicion.

After I explained it to him like that, Nathan no longer persisted in staying, and he went home after I promised him to take care of them.

Right then, the car stopped in front of me, and the headlights went off, helping me catch a glimpse of Mason Kravitz in the driver's seat.

He turned the engine off, then got out of the car, running a hand through his hair like he already knew he was in trouble.

I ignored him to look at the backseat, where I could see no movement, and my eyes sharpened.

"Sir..." Mason started, but I held up a hand, cutting him off before he could proceed.

My gaze swept to him, and he clamped his lips together, taking the hint.

Without a word, I walked over to the backseat and pulled the door open, revealing the two girls who were slumped over each other.

Diana and Nancy both had their eyes shut but clung tightly to each other. Nancy was resting against the window and the door, while Diana had her head in her lap.

Both girls looked a mess, and the stench of alcohol couldn't be more obvious.

"What is this?" I gritted my teeth and turned my gaze to Mason, who stiffened visibly.

"Sir...They're fine. They're just..."

"Just what? Drunk?" I cut in.

He stared at me, then lowered his head guiltily.

I took it to mean that I was right too, and even if I hadn't asked, I could already tell that they'd had too much to drink.

It wasn't a surprise that Diana was drunk; I knew she used to drink at parties and had studied her enough to know that she had drunk past her tolerance limit tonight, but Nancy...

The latter was still an unopened book to me when it came to this, and I couldn't even tell how much she'd drunk to have her this way.

Her head moved slightly against the car door, and her fingers curled weakly into her side.

When she groaned softly, my gaze darkened again, and my eyes snapped to Mason once more.

"Sir, it's not what you think. She didn't even want to drink but...but..."

He lowered his head again, this time in acceptance, "It was my fault, I shouldn't have let them drink. I should have..."

"You should have known better."

My gaze deepened on him, and his lips parted. I thought he would argue, but he nodded instead, "Yes, sir."

“Help me get them inside.” I sighed a couple of minutes later.

Mason paused, then blinked. “Sir?”

“You heard me.” I looked over my shoulder at him.

He blinked again, then hurriedly nodded. I stepped forward and looped my head into the car, alternating glances between Diana and Nancy.

I didn't take long before I pulled myself out and turned around the car, leaving Mason glancing at me cluelessly.

Reaching for the door, I opened it and quickly stuck my hands out, catching Nancy.

She was the one I reached for, not Diana.

My arms slid under her while Mason let out a sound that suggested he wanted to say something but didn't know what to say.

I kept my gaze on Nancy, though, as though he wasn't there.

She was warm against my slightly cold skin, and because of how close I was to her, I could see her face even clearer now.

Her skin was flushed, and her lips were puckered.

The moment I lifted her, her head fell against my shoulder, and an incoherent mumble made its way past her lips.

My grip tightened instinctively.

"...Sir?” Mason's voice came from behind me. He sounded quite confused.

I didn’t look at him but kept my attention focused on Nancy, lifting her into my arms. My face pulled into a frown when I discovered how light she was.

"Mr Landon, what are you doing?" Mason's voice rose again, slower this time.

I turned my head slightly, just enough to see him, then said sternly, “Get Diana.”

He hesitated for about a minute, then reacted, "Right."

Following my words, he moved quickly and then carefully carried Diana out of the car.

We walked in silence after that, into the house. I opened the door easily, then closed it after he walked in. Our footsteps echoed in the silent house, and when he got to the middle of the living room, Mason paused and glanced at me as though waiting for further instructions.

“Take her to her room,” I said, already walking towards the stairs.

“Yes, sir.” I didn't look back, but I heard his footsteps following closely behind me.

I didn't slow down either and kept walking down the hallway until I came before Nancy's door.

Behind me, I heard the faint sound of a door opening and deduced that Mason had reached Diana's room.

Utilizing my shoulder, I pushed Nancy's door open and walked in, reaching out to flip on the light before walking over to her bed.

There, I set her down, then straightened above her.

She didn't even stir, and all she did was shift slightly, causing her hand to brush weakly against my arm before it fell back.

The moment her hand touched my skin, I stepped away quickly, then dragged a hand through my hair, exhaling slowly.

A couple of minutes later, I told myself my reaction meant nothing.

Bending slightly, I pulled off her shoes and dropped them by the side of the bed.

It happened then.

Her hands shot out unexpectedly and grabbed the front of my shirt, pulling tight.

“What..." I reacted in surprise, but didn't even get to finish.

She pulled me down with more force than I imagined she could muster and kissed me.

My mind, my heart, even time, all stopped functioning, and all I could feel was how warm her lips were.

In the second our lips met, my mind froze, and I didn't react until reality slammed back in.

I pulled back immediately.

“What are you doing?”

She blinked slowly with her eyes barely open, looking unaware of her surroundings with a soft, dazed look.

Shortly after, a faint smile crossed her lips, and her eyes cracked open a bit.

“I don’t..." she murmured, words slurring.

I tensed, listening.

“I don’t want Mason..." Her words finally came out, and I went still.

Her fingers tightened even harder on my shirt.

“I want..." her voice trailed off, and she blinked slowly like she was fighting to stay conscious.

Then her voice softened, "I want you."
