Chapter 15 Beyond the Horizon

Chapter 15 Beyond the Horizon
The highway stretched into the gray dawn, a ribbon of asphalt cutting through the desolate outskirts of Graystone, where mist clung to the earth like a shroud. Lena Carver’s sedan roared forward, its engine a low growl against the silence of the open road. Her shoulder, thigh, and side burned with every jolt, the fresh graze a searing reminder of the ambush at Walsh’s cabin. Blood seeped through her makeshift bandages, but Lena’s grip on the wheel was iron, her green eyes locked on the horizon. Sarah Lin sat in the back, her bruised face pale, her hands knotted in her lap, her silence a puzzle Lena couldn’t solve. Marcus Holt slumped in the passenger seat, his bloodied shirt clinging to his frame, his eyes scanning the rearview for Nexus DataCorp’s hunters. The Architect Vera Holt, Marcus’ sister was a name now, not a shadow, but her threat loomed larger than ever. The latest text, deleted but burned into Lena’s mind Vera’s waiting, Lena was a challenge she’d answer, no matter the cost.
The air in the car was heavy with distrust and exhaustion. Riley’s last message Nexus hacked the press servers, pulling leaks meant the city’s firestorm was flickering, Nexus clawing back control. Agent Torres’ warning about Kane’s death and compromised feds confirmed Lena’s fears: no one was clean. Clara Voss was still in custody, but for how long? The USB drive, Riley’s files, and Lena’s recording had wounded the hydra, but Vera was its heart, beating somewhere beyond Port Haven. Ethan’s ghost his reckless grin, his drive to expose corruption pushed Lena forward, even as her body begged to stop.
“We can’t keep running blind,” Marcus said, his voice gruff, strained by pain. “Vera’s in London, maybe. We need resources money, contacts, a way out of the country.”
Lena’s jaw tightened, her eyes flicking to him. “Your sister’s the Architect, Marcus. You expect me to believe you didn’t know?”
Marcus met her gaze, his guilt raw. “I didn’t, Lena. Vera was always distant, obsessed with power. I thought she was just a banker, not… this.” He paused, his voice softening. “I’ll make it right. For you, for Ethan.”
Lena didn’t respond, her trust in him a fraying thread. She glanced at Sarah in the rearview, the dame’s silence louder than words. “And you,” Lena said, her voice sharp. “Every time we move, Nexus is there. You’re either cursed or a leak.”
Sarah’s eyes flashed, defiant. “I’m not working for them, Lena. They burned my life, same as yours. I gave you Vera’s name doesn’t that count?”
“Not enough,” Lena said, her hand resting on her Glock. “You’re with me until I’m sure.”
The road curved through a stretch of barren fields, the sedan’s headlights cutting through the fog. Lena’s phone buzzed a faint signal, a text from an unknown number: Vera’s closer than you think, Carver. Her pulse quickened, but she deleted it, her resolve steel. Nexus was taunting her, but taunts meant they were scared. She checked her fuel gauge half a tank. Graystone was behind them, but Nexus’ reach wasn’t.
“We need a plan,” Lena said, breaking the silence. “Walsh gave us IDs, cash. We get to a port, find a ship to London. Vera’s the endgame.”
Sarah leaned forward, her voice urgent. “There’s a smuggler in Bayside, runs cargo ships. I used him to move data for Ethan. He can get us out, no questions.”
Lena’s eyes narrowed. “Another contact? You’re a regular phonebook, Sarah.”
“It’s all I’ve got,” Sarah said, her voice cracking. “You want Vera, this is the way.”
Marcus nodded, his hand on his gun. “Bayside’s a risk Nexus has eyes on every port. But it’s our best shot.”
Lena didn’t trust either of them, but Bayside was a lead. She turned the sedan toward the coast, the road narrowing as the marshes gave way to salt flats. Her wounds ached, her vision blurring, but Ethan’s memory kept her sharp. The city’s corruption Chief Ramsey, Hargrove, the feds had roots deeper than she’d imagined, and Vera was the key.
A low rumble broke the silence a black van, cresting a hill behind them, its headlights piercing the fog. Nexus. Lena floored the gas, the sedan lurching forward. “Hold on,” she said, her voice grim. Sarah gripped the seat, Marcus braced his gun. The van gained, its engine a predatory growl.
Bullets sparked off the sedan’s rear, shattering the back window. Lena swerved, her wounds screaming, and returned fire through the broken glass. A tire blew on the van, sending it skidding, but another appeared, cutting them off. Lena veered onto a side road, gravel flying, the sedan fishtailing. “Sarah, shoot!” she shouted.
Sarah grabbed Lena’s spare clip, firing wildly, her hands shaking but her aim true. A bullet hit the second van’s driver, and it crashed into a ditch. Lena pushed the sedan harder, the first van still on their tail. Marcus leaned out, firing, his shots precise despite his limp. The van’s windshield cracked, and it slowed, fading into the fog.
Lena’s vision swam, blood loss taking its toll. “Bayside’s ten miles,” she said, her voice hoarse. “We make it, or we’re done.”
They reached the port, a sprawl of cranes and rusted ships, the air thick with diesel and salt. Sarah pointed to a weathered freighter, its crew loading crates under flickering lights. “That’s him Rico. He’ll take us.”
Lena parked, her gun ready, and approached the ship. Rico, a grizzled man with a scar across his cheek, eyed them warily. “You’re trouble,” he said, but took their cash. “London, no stops. Get below.”
As they boarded, Lena’s phone buzzed unknown number: Vera’s waiting, Lena. The game’s just begun. She crushed the phone under her boot, her resolve iron. Nexus was a hydra, but she’d cut every head. Vera Holt was next, and Lena would chase her across oceans, for Ethan, for justice, for the truth. Port Haven’s predators had met their match, and Lena Carver was ready to hunt.
