Chapter 99 Untitled Chapter

Chapter 99 Untitled Chapter
When I arrived at the headquarters the next day, I had officers sent to the address where Samson was hiding Elena and Maureen.

Last night, we thought they were out of the city, but they weren't. He took them to his guesthouse, which was known only to him and a few select individuals close to him.

Unfortunately, they didn't find them either; it turned out he had left the city with them the night before, when he discovered that I had gone to his mansion to see them.

Samson thinks he is smart, but he isn't. I will definitely find him, and when I do, he will regret the nonsense he put up at the headquarters.

“Detective Lizzy?” He dropped a case file on the desk and passed it to me.

“Yesterday, we received a report from Uptown; a prominent man in that location was murdered inside his mansion last night. His wife said she saw someone running out of his study room, his face covered with a mask.”

Hmmm! An attack?

I went through the case file, and just as the officer had said, it was an attack. But I don't believe in all these until I finish my investigation.

“We are going to the mansion; get your team ready.”

He bowed his head slightly and hurried out.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at the mansion. However, the corpse has already been taken away to the mortuary, but I ordered it to be brought back until I am done with my investigation.

I don't work that way. It is either that the corpses are here, or they've been brought back.

“He has already been taken to the mortuary, Detective Lizzy, and it is against his respect to be brought back.” His son said in concern.

Anyway, since that's not my thing, I ignored him and went to check out the study room they said he was in when he was murdered.

Inside the study room, there wasn't any sign that a person had been killed there. It was as neat as ever, no dust and no crumbled papers.

“Did you say the murder was carried out here?” The officer nodded his head, stepping forward.

“I am as confused as you are, Detective Lizzy. The family said he was killed here.”

Nope, I am not confused. I know how these things work.

I walked around, turning over what was facing down and checking out anything that might be used for the murder, but nothing positive came out.

As I was still searching, the corpse was brought back, so I abandoned the investigation and went out.

After examining the corpse's body, I couldn't find any spot that was injured except the back of his head.

That injury looked like a hard object had been smashed on his head, leading to his death.

Didn't the wife say he was attacked in his study room? Then why isn't there any blood stain there?

I think I am getting the hang of this.

“Where is the wife?” I asked the officer, removing the disposable gloves in my hands.

“In her room, I guess.”

Well, she needs some explanations. Since she was the one who saw the murderer, she would know what he looks like.

When I was shown her room, I didn't knock on the door; I only turned the door handle and went in, startling her.

She was together with the deceased son, chatting and smiling as if nothing had happened in the house.

Being startled was an understatement; she and her stepson were shocked to the marrow.

“D…detective, what are you doing here?” His eyes rolled in the socket, and he stuttered.

They weren't expecting me, right? They didn't know I was still around and would probably go into the room.

Seeing those two together, one would think they were a couple. She is the same age as the son, and they must have something going on between them.

“Your husband had just died; why are you smiling and chatting merrily as if you are happy he is dead?”

She gasped, getting out of bed. She and the son exchanged glances, but he was more nervous than her.

Maybe she doesn't know the gravity of the situation, but the son had already grasped it the moment I stepped inside the room.

“What are you insinuating, Detective Lizzy? That I am happy my husband is head?” Her voice cracked, and she lowered her head, sobbing.

And there we go! This always happens with women who have a hidden secret about their husband’s death.

“My stepmomloves my dad so much, Detective Lizzy; do not accuse her.”

And now he is upset about it. Well, we shall see how this unfolds.

I swerved towards the woman whose face was buried in her palms, sobbing uncontrollably as if she had just received the news of her husband’s death.

“You said you saw someone run out of the study room, correct?”

She bobbed her head, wiping the tears on her face gently.

“But when I checked the murder scene, there wasn't anything that showed he was killed in there.”

I examined her and the way she glanced at the son when I dropped the bomb. But as a smart person, she looked at me with eyes full of pity and sniffled.

“You must have looked wrong, Detective. My husband was murdered in that room, I swear to that.”

When she broke down in tears again, her stepson wrapped her in his arms, gently patting her back.

So much like lovers. These dudes think they can fool me.

As he was doing whatever nonsense to stop her from crying, my eyes darted to the bed and caught a glimpse of a blood stain on the duvet.

With a mischievous grin on the side of my lips, I walked forward, sat down on the bed, and clutched the duvet.

“What are you doing, Detective?” She sniffled, stepping away from her stepson.

I ignored her, got up from the bed, and started pacing around the room.

Something interesting happened in this room, and that blood stain can never belong to her.

I paused in the middle of the room, spun to look at their confused faces, and shook my head.

“You killed your husband in this room.”
