Chapter 53: Kinship Revealed
Chapter 53: Kinship Revealed
The vision hit Jessica during breakfast, so powerful that she dropped her coffee mug. Michael caught it with supernatural speed, but his concern deepened as her eyes glazed over, seeing somewhere else entirely.
A young woman with Morrison features—dark hair, sharp cheekbones, shadows that danced at her fingertips without conscious control. She was running through unfamiliar streets, terror and confusion radiating from her. And behind her, hunters. Council-aligned hunters who moved with lethal precision.
Jessica gasped back to awareness, gripping the kitchen counter. "There's another Morrison. Someone with active powers."
Michael was already reaching for his phone. "Where?"
"I don't know. The vision wasn't clear. But the hunters are close." She closed her eyes, trying to recall details. "Late twenties, untrained, afraid. She doesn't understand what's happening to her."
Within an hour, Morrison & Associates had transformed into a war room. Victoria cross-referenced Morrison family records while David used his catalyst to amplify Jessica's vision, searching for geographical markers. Michael coordinated with his clan and supernatural underground contacts, casting a wide net across Chicago and beyond.
"Here." Victoria's finger stabbed an old document. "Emma Morrison. Your second cousin on your father's side. Family records say she was 'sent away for school' twenty-three years ago, but..."
"But that's code for hiding supernatural abilities." Jessica studied the faded photograph. The resemblance was unmistakable. "Where is she now?"
"Last known address was Springfield. But if hunters are after her, she's probably on the move."
David's catalyst flared. "Got her. North side, near the Rogers Park border. She's actively using magic—raw, uncontrolled bursts."
They moved quickly, taking Michael's car while Gregor dispatched clan members to establish a perimeter. Jessica spent the drive trying to center herself, preparing to mentor someone going through what she'd experienced months ago. The irony wasn't lost on her—from struggling novice to teacher in less than a year.
"You'll know what to say," Michael assured her, one hand leaving the steering wheel to squeeze hers. "You remember what it was like."
"That's what worries me. I made so many mistakes."
"And you survived them. Thrived, even." His dark eyes met hers briefly. "She'll be lucky to have you."
They found Emma cornered in an alley, shadows exploding from her in uncontrolled waves as three hunters closed in. The men wore Council insignia openly now—the organization was getting bolder, less concerned with secrecy.
Michael moved first, vampire speed allowing him to disarm one hunter before the humans could react. Jessica channeled her shadows with precision, tendrils wrapping around the remaining two and yanking them backward. The hunters struggled, but David had already arrived with backup—werewolves from Michael's clan who efficiently restrained the men.
Emma stared at them all with wide, terrified eyes. Her shadows still rippled around her, responding to her fear. She looked like a cornered animal, ready to bolt or fight.
"Emma Morrison," Jessica said softly, approaching with her hands visible and empty. "I'm Jessica. I'm family. And I understand exactly what you're going through."
"Stay back!" Emma's voice cracked. "I don't know what's happening to me. These things, these shadows—"
"Are part of your heritage. Your birthright." Jessica let her own shadows manifest, controlled and gentle, reaching toward Emma's with familial recognition. "The Morrison women have carried this power for generations."
Emma watched the shadow tendrils intertwine, her panic slowly giving way to confusion. "Family? But my parents never mentioned—"
"They were protecting you. Or trying to." Victoria stepped forward, her presence commanding but kind. "I'm Victoria Chen. I helped Jessica when her powers awakened. We can help you too."
Over the next hour, they explained everything—the Council, the Morrison legacy, the danger Emma now faced. She took it better than Jessica had expected, though shock kept her unnaturally calm. When they brought her back to the firm, she stared at the familiar space her cousin had mentioned only in passing.
"You work here? This is the Morrison firm?"
"It's more than a firm now." Jessica guided her to the conference room. "It's a sanctuary. A place where people like us can be safe."
As Jessica began Emma's crash course in shadow magic, she found the teaching surprisingly natural. Emma had raw talent but zero control, her powers fluctuating with her emotions. Jessica remembered that volatility, the fear of her own abilities. She used that understanding to guide Emma through basic exercises—sensing shadows, calling them, dismissing them.
Michael watched from the doorway, and through their bond Jessica felt his pride. When she glanced up, he mouthed, "You're amazing." She flushed, focusing back on Emma.
"You're doing great," Jessica encouraged as Emma successfully maintained a small shadow sphere for thirty seconds. "Better than I was at this stage."
"Really?" Emma's skepticism was endearing. "Because I set my apartment on fire last week."
"I nearly collapsed a parking garage. Fire's manageable."
They both laughed, the tension easing. As Emma practiced, Jessica saw her own journey reflected—the fear, the determination, the gradual acceptance of power. It reinforced how far she'd come.
That evening, after ensuring Emma was settled in guest quarters with protective wards, Jessica found Michael in her office. He'd been making calls all day, coordinating security and investigating how the hunters had found Emma so quickly.
"Gregor's proposing something," Michael said carefully. "A formal supernatural wedding. Between us."
Jessica's heart skipped. "A wedding?"
"It's political, partially. A binding ceremony that would cement the alliance between Morrison witches and the Steele clan. But it's also..." He stood, moving to stand before her. "It's also what I want. Not just for politics. For us."
"Michael—"
"I know it's fast by human standards. But I've existed for centuries, Jessica. I know what I want. Who I want." He took her hands. "You're my partner, my equal, my future. I want that recognized. Supernaturally and personally."
Jessica's mind raced. A supernatural wedding meant binding rituals, deep magic, a connection even more profound than what they already shared. It meant declaring to every faction that they were united, inseparable.
It also meant admitting she saw forever with him, however long her mortal life lasted.
"Yes," she said, watching joy transform his features. "Yes to all of it."
Michael kissed her, pouring centuries of loneliness ended and future hope into the gesture. When they finally separated, both were breathless, and Jessica felt their bond singing with shared happiness.
"We should probably tell the others," she murmured against his lips.
"Probably." But Michael kissed her again instead, and Jessica decided announcements could wait.
Their bubble of happiness burst the next morning when David rushed in, his catalyst glowing ominously. "The hunters Jessica captured—they're gone. And there's a note."
The message was brief and chilling: We have what we came for. The girl completes the prophecy. Come to the old Morrison estate if you want her back alive. - T.K.
Jessica's blood ran cold. "Thomas Kane. But he was supposed to be rehabilitated, helping us—"
"Was he ever, though?" Victoria's face was grim. "Or was that all manipulation? Council plants run deep, Jessica."
Emma was gone. The protective wards had been circumvented by someone with insider knowledge. And Thomas Kane, who Jessica had trusted after his apparent redemption, had revealed himself as the betrayer David's catalyst had sensed.
Michael's hands clenched. "Where's the old Morrison estate?"
"Outside the city. About an hour north." Jessica was already grabbing her ritual bag, fury and fear warring inside her. "Victoria, I need everything we have on blood-relative tracking spells."
"Jessica, it's obviously a trap," David protested.
"I know. We're going anyway." Her eyes met Michael's, finding determination mirrored there. "Emma's family. And she's under my protection now."
As they prepared for what was clearly going to be an ambush, Jessica felt Rebecca's fragment stir with approval. The presence whispered: "Finally. You're learning that sometimes, power is the only answer."
Jessica ignored it, focusing instead on the plan forming in her mind—one that relied on teamwork, strategy, and the bonds she'd built rather than just raw power. Rebecca could whisper all she wanted. Jessica would save Emma her way.
Not the Council's way. Not Rebecca's way.
Her way.
