Chapter 59 059
Chapter 59 059
Rayna
I was still standing there when it happened. I was still breathing too fast, still
shaking with the aftermath of everything I’d thrown at him. I was still waiting for the silence to finish choking the rest of the fight out of me, and whether that happened or not, I still wasn't going to move.
I hadn’t moved from my spot in front of him. I didn’t trust myself to. If I stepped back now, I knew I wouldn’t step forward again. I’d lose whatever fragile edge I still had, whatever momentum I’d built by finally saying the things I’d been swallowing for days.
So I stayed.
“You don’t get to keep doing this,” I said hoarsely, the words scraping their way out of my chest. My entire body was burning and buzzing with a million and one emotions, but I didn't care. Not one bit. “You don’t get to sit there and let me unravel while you hide behind…” I laughed, sharp and broken. “Behind what? Silence? Discipline? Some sick sense of control?”
He didn’t move.
“Answer me,” I demanded. “Just once.”
Zero didn't answer me, and fit a quick second,I deliberated adding the word please. I could hear myself crashing now. I could feel it. My voice was louder than I’d ever allowed it to be in this room, my hands clenched so tight my nails bit into my palms. I was past careful, past clever, and past strategy.
I was desperate. Borderline desperate.
“Say it was nothing,” I pressed. “Say you don’t know anything. Say my sister meant nothing to you, that the locket was just another object you catalogued and forgot about. That you didn't even mean your reaction.”
My throat tightened, but I continued.
“Lie to me if you have to,” I whispered. “Just don’t stand there and look through me like I’m…”
He looked up, and that was all it took for the rest of my words to hang in my throat.
He didn't give me a glance this time, and it wasn't the half-second flicker I’d trained myself to read like a language, nor was it the hardened eyes lowered again in restraint.
He lifted his head fully, and he looked directly into my eyes.
The impact was immediate and almost physical, like a hand closing around my spine and holding me still.
His gaze locked onto mine, intense and unblinking, dark with something I couldn’t name fast enough to protect myself from it. There was no distance in it, no careful avoidance, no shield. Just focus, raw and deliberate, like he was telling me something. Something entirely different from the times he'd been feeding me breadcrumbs in the form of hope and signs.
It stole the rest of my words.
I froze mid-breath, my lungs stalling as if my body had forgotten how to work. My heart slammed once, hard enough to hurt, then again, and faster, like it was trying to escape.
Oh.
I hadn’t been ready for this, not at all. If someone had predicted to me that this was how tonight was going to go, then best believe that I would have laughed so hard that they would have no other choice than to run with their heads in between their legs.
For nights, I’d begged for signs, for cracks, for literally anything to prove I wasn’t screaming into a void, and now that he was finally looking at me, really looking, I had no idea what to do with it.
The room shifted, not physically, but something in the air changed, tightening, sharpening, like the space between us had been drawn taut and strung with wire. His eyes didn’t soften, but they didn’t harden either. They simply held me, steady and unrelenting, like he was transferring whatever he wanted me to know through a mind link or something, only, I didn't receive it. Not the way he was sending it anyway.
Whatever the heck he was doing felt invasive, it felt intimate, and it felt dangerous.
What the hell was going on?
My mouth opened, then closed again. I swallowed, suddenly acutely aware of my pulse, of the heat creeping up my neck, and of how exposed I felt standing there under that gaze.
This wasn’t passive silence. This was attention, in its pure and rawest forms.
“You….” I tried, and faltered. My voice came out weaker than I wanted. “You’re doing that on purpose.”
He didn’t blink. He ddn’t look away, didn’t give me the mercy of distance, and I took that as a confirmation of what I'd just said.
My stomach twisted, confusion colliding violently with relief and something darker, something that made my skin feel too tight. I’d wanted him to react. I’d demanded it.
But this? This was not what I’d imagined.
“What is that?” I whispered, hating the way the words sounded like a plea. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Zero still didn't give me an answer with his words, but his eyes spoke anyway. They were filled with restraint so tightly coiled it bordered on violence. With something old and furious and buried so deep it had learned to survive without air. Whatever lived behind them had been contained for a very long time, and I had just dragged my fingers across the lock.
The realization hit me all at once, cold and sharp.
He had been listening all along. Not just hearing, but listening, and now, for the first time since I’d walked into this room, since I’d challenged him, teased him, ignored him, bared myself in pieces and then all at once….
I didn’t know who had the upper hand.
My anger faltered, sputtering like a flame starved of oxygen. My accusations felt suddenly fragile, and suspended between us without the force they’d carried seconds ago.
I shifted my weight, unsteady.
“Say something,” I said again, but the demand had softened, transformed into something uncertain. “Please.”
His jaw tightened. His eyes never left mine, and that was when it sank in, slow and terrifying:
Silence didn’t mean absence. It meant control.
And the way he was looking at me now, unblinking, unyielding, felt like a warning I was only just beginning to understand.
I stood there, caught in his gaze, my heartbeat loud enough to drown out everything else, knowing with a sick certainty that whatever line I’d crossed tonight, there was no stepping back over it.
He still didn’t speak, but for the first time, I wasn’t sure I wanted him to.
Heaven knows I had no idea how we were going to move ahead from this point, and I guess God had so mercifully decided to intervene at the last minute . I had barely parted my lips to ask another question, before the all too familiar and almost superior voice filled the room.
“Man and woman.” The Mistress’ voice blared around the room, and this time, I wasn't sure if I was pleased or disappointed. Her voice held a hint of mischief in it too, but I forced myself to push that aside. “The night has come to an end.”
Her words echoed even minutes after she'd spoken, but for the first time in a while, I wasn't sure I was ready to call it a night yet.
Shit.
