Late Night Study

Late Night Study
Ethan's POV

The fire escape ladder shook under my weight as I climbed down from the third floor of the abandoned science building. My hands were bleeding from holding the rusty metal, but I couldn't stop now. Reed's robot students were checking every building on campus, and this was the only place left to hide.
"Ethan!" Alex's voice called from below. "Hurry!"
I dropped the last few feet and fell hard on the ground behind the dumpsters. Alex grabbed my arm and pulled me toward a broken basement window.
"In here," he whispered. "Liam found a way in."
We crawled through the window into the dark basement of the old building. Our phones were dead - Reed had somehow killed all the cell towers on campus. The only light came from Liam's camping lamp.
"Is this place safe?" I asked, trying to catch my breath.
"For now," Liam said. "This building has been empty for two years. No electricity, no internet, no way for Reed to track us electronically."
I looked around the dusty basement. Old science equipment was stacked everywhere. Broken beakers, rusty lab tables, and texts from the 1990s.
"This is where we're going to make our last stand?" Alex asked. "In a basement full of junk?"
"It's better than being turned into robots," I said.
That's when we heard footsteps above us. Slow, steady sounds walking back and forth across the first floor.
"They found us," Alex whispered.
"No," Liam said, listening carefully. "That's just one person. And they're not walking like Reed's robots. Too random."
The footsteps stopped right above our heads. Then we heard a voice calling down.
"Hello? Is someone down there?"
It was a girl's voice. Young. Scared.
"Should we answer?" Alex asked.
"It could be a trap," I said.
But then the voice called again. "Please, if you're down there, I need help. My name is Sarah. I'm hiding from the robot people too."
Liam crept toward the broken window and peeked out. "I can see her feet on the first floor. She's alone."
"How do we know she's not one of them?" I asked.
"We test her," Alex said. "Reed's robots can't lie about certain things."
"What do you mean?" Liam asked.
"They can't say they hate Reed. I noticed it when Professor Martinez was chasing us. She kept talking about 'we' and 'us' like she was part of Reed's team."
I thought about it. "That's actually smart. Sarah?" I called up. "Can you hear me?"
"Yes! Oh thank god, I thought I was the only one left."
"We need you to say something first," I said. "Say 'I hate Professor Reed and everything he stands for.'"
There was a pause. Then: "I hate Professor Reed and everything he stands for! He's a monster who ruined everything!"
"She's clean," Alex said.
We helped Sarah climb down through the basement window. She was about our age, with short red hair and a backpack full of goods.
"I've been hiding in the library since this afternoon," she said. "I saw what happened to everyone. It was horrible."
"How did you avoid getting turned into a robot?" Liam asked.
"I was in the bathroom when Reed's nanobots started spreading through the air vents. By the time I came out, everyone in the library had blue glowing eyes. I hid in the rare books section until dark."
Sarah sat down on an old lab stool and started unpacking her backpack. She had water bottles, energy bars, and a first aid kit.
"I also grabbed these," she said, pulling out several thick textbooks. "If we're going to be stuck here all night, we might as well study for finals."
"Finals?" Alex stared at her. "Are you serious? The entire school has been taken over by evil robots, and you want to study?"
"What else are we going to do?" Sarah asked. "Sit here and panic? I'd rather keep my mind busy."
I had to admit, she had a point. We couldn't leave the basement until morning, and stressing about Reed all night wouldn't help anyone.
"What subject?" I asked.
"Biology," Sarah said, opening one of the textbooks. "I was supposed to take my final exam tomorrow before all this happened."
"I can help with that," I said. "Biology is my major."
We spent the next few hours going through practice questions by lantern light. It felt weird learning for school while hiding from mind-controlled robots, but it actually helped me stay calm.
Alex and Liam finally joined in too. We quizzed each other on everything from cell division to genetics to evolution. For a while, it almost felt like a normal study group.
But around midnight, things got strange.
"Okay, next question," Sarah said, reading from the guide. "What is the primary function of nanobots in biological systems?"
"Wait," I said. "That's not a normal biology question. Nanobots aren't in our books."
Sarah looked down at the page. "You're right. That's weird. It says here: 'Nanobots are microscopic robots intended to alter human brain chemistry and behavior patterns.'"
"Let me see that book," Liam said.
Sarah gave it to him, but when he opened it, all the pages were blank.
"What the hell?" Alex said.
"That's impossible," Sarah said. "I was just reading from it."
I grabbed the book and flipped through it. Every page was completely empty.
"Sarah," I said slowly. "Where exactly did you get these textbooks?"
"From the library. I told you, I was hiding in the rare books area."
"But the rare books section doesn't have biology textbooks," Liam said. "It only has historical documents and old literature."
Sarah looked confused. "That doesn't make sense. I definitely got them from the library."
"What's the last thing you remember before finding the books?" Alex asked.
"I was hiding behind a shelf, and then... and then..." Sarah's face went blank for a moment. "I don't remember."
My heart started racing. "Sarah, I need you to say something else. Say 'Reed is my enemy and I want him to fail.'"
"I... I..." Sarah tried to speak, but no words came out. She looked frightened.
"She can't say it," Liam whispered.
"But she said she hated Reed earlier," Alex said.
"Maybe the programming takes time to activate," I said. "Maybe she's been slowly turning into one of them."
Sarah started crying. "I don't understand what's happening to me. I feel like there's something in my head, trying to take control."
"Fight it," I said. "You're stronger than Reed's technology."
"I'm trying, but it's getting harder to think clearly." Sarah looked at us with fear in her eyes. "You have to get away from me. I can feel it taking over."
"We're not leaving you," Alex said.
But then Sarah's eyes started to glow blue.
"Yes, you are," she said in Reed's voice. "In fact, you're coming with me."
Sarah stood up and walked toward the basement window. But instead of getting out, she pressed something on the wall.
Suddenly, bright lights filled the basement. It wasn't an abandoned building at all. We were in Reed's office.
"Surprise," Reed's voice said through Sarah. "Did you really think you could hide from me in my own building?"
All around us, the walls slid away to show holding cells. In one of them, I could see Sophia and Marcus. In another, Jasmine was walking back and forth.
"The abandoned chemistry building was demolished last year," Sarah added. "I've been watching you crawl around in my basement laboratory for hours. Very entertaining."
Government agents stepped out from behind secret panels. We were completely trapped.
"The best part," Reed said through Sarah, "is that you actually helped me perfect my nanobots by studying here all night. Every breath you took held microscopic robots. Every question you answered helped me map your brain patterns."
I felt something strange happening in my head. Like a buzzing sound that was getting louder.
"Alex," I said, but my voice sounded weird. Robotic.
Alex looked at me with fear. "Ethan, your eyes..."
I looked down at my hands. They were glowing with a faint blue light.
"Welcome to the team," Reed said through all of us at once.
