Liam's Secret
Alex crashed to the floor and rolled, barely missing the metal table as he landed. The room was dark except for a single light bulb hanging from the ceiling.
"Alex!" Ethan's voice came from somewhere nearby. "Are you okay?"
Before Alex could answer, the lights flickered on. They were in some kind of basement lab filled with computers and strange equipment. Ethan, Emily, and Jasmine were there too, all looking scared but okay.
And standing by the door was Liam.
"Liam?" Ethan gasped. "What are you doing here?"
Liam stepped forward, his face grim. "Saving your life. Again." He held up a key card. "We need to move. Now. They'll realize the security system is down any minute."
"Wait," Alex said, getting to his feet. "How did you find us? How did you get in here?"
"Questions later," Liam snapped. "Unless you want to meet more robot versions of your family members?"
That got them going. They followed Liam through a maze of halls, alarm lights flashing silently above them.
"The power to the alarm speakers is cut," Liam explained as they ran. "But the guards will still know something's wrong."
"Guards?" Emily whispered. "What is this place?"
"Reed's main lab," Liam said. "Where he creates his 'special projects.'"
They turned a corner and froze. Two men in black uniforms blocked their way. Before anyone could respond, Liam moved with surprising speed. He took down both guards with quick, accurate hits that looked like something from a spy movie.
Ethan stared at Liam in shock. "Since when can you fight like that?"
Liam didn't answer. He just grabbed a gun from one of the fallen guards and checked the path ahead. "Clear. Let's go."
As they continued through the building, Alex's mind raced. How did Liam know about this place? How did he know about the robots? And most importantly, whose side was he really on?
Finally, they reached a small room with monitors showing different parts of the building. Liam locked the door behind them.
"We have ten minutes before the next security sweep," he said. "Then we need to be gone."
"Not until you tell us what's going on," Alex insisted. "How are you involved in all this?"
Liam paused, looking at Ethan rather than Alex. "I've been watching Reed for months. I know what he's planning."
"Are you FBI?" Jasmine asked.
"No." Liam's voice was tight. "My sister was one of his first test subjects. Three years ago. She disappeared from campus, just like those students in the photos you found, Alex."
"Test subjects?" Emily's voice shook. "For what?"
"His face-changing technology. At first, it was just masks. Then synthetic skin. Now he's creating full robots that can pass as human." Liam's eyes darkened. "My sister never came home. I enrolled here to find out what happened to her."
Alex remembered the list of missing students. "Was her name on that list? In Reed's office?"
"Yes. With a check mark." Liam's face hardened. "I think the check marks mean they're dead. Or worse."
Silence fell over the room as they processed this. On one of the cameras, Alex spotted a room with Sophia tied to a chair, just like in the video. She was alone, her head bowed.
"My sister," he said, pointing to the screen. "We have to get her out."
"And then what?" Ethan asked. "We're underground in the middle of nowhere. Even if we escape, where do we go?"
"I have a car hidden half a mile from here," Liam said. "If we can make it to the woods, we might have a chance."
Alex studied Liam carefully. "Why are you helping us? The truth this time."
Liam glanced at Ethan, then looked away quickly. "Because Reed needs to be stopped. And because..."
"Because what?" Ethan pressed.
Liam took a deep breath. "Because I care about what happens to you, okay?" His voice cracked slightly. "I always have."
The room fell silent. Alex looked between Liam and Ethan, finally understanding the stress that had always existed between them. It wasn't just competition or protectiveness.
Liam had feelings for Ethan.
"How long?" Ethan asked quietly.
"Since tenth grade," Liam admitted. "When you stood up for me after my parents' divorce. When everyone else walked away, you stayed."
Ethan looked stunned. "Why didn't you ever say anything?"
"Because I knew you didn't feel the same way." Liam's eyes flickered to Alex. "And lately, I've seen how you look at someone else."
Alex felt his face grow warm. Jasmine and Emily shared uncomfortable glances.
"Look, this really isn't the time for—" Alex began.
"You're right," Liam interrupted. "We need to move. But I couldn't keep lying. Not when any of us could die today."
He pulled up a map of the building on one of the monitors. "Sophia is being held here, two floors down. The exit is here, four hallways over. We'll need to split up."
"Split up?" Emily shook her head. "That never works. The group that goes for Sophia will get caught, and the rest of us will have to go back for them."
"She's right," Alex said. "We go together or not at all."
Liam looked like he wanted to argue, but Ethan stepped in. "Alex is right. I've seen enough horror movies to know splitting up is a bad idea."
Their eyes met, and something passed between them—something Liam clearly noticed. His jaw tensed, but he nodded.
"Fine. Together. But we need a distraction."
Jasmine grinned suddenly. "I might have an idea." She pointed to a control panel labeled 'Specimen Containment.' "What happens if we release whatever Reed is keeping locked up?"
"We don't know what's in there," Liam warned.
"Exactly," Jasmine said. "Neither will the guards."
It was risky, but they had no better choices. Jasmine disabled the security on the containment cells while Liam guided them through the maze of hallways toward Sophia's position.
They had almost reached her when alarms began blaring—real ones this time, with sound.
"What happened to cutting the alarm speakers?" Alex shouted over the noise.
"Backup systems!" Liam yelled back. "Run!"
They raced down the final hallway to Sophia's room. The door was locked with a code.
"Stand back," Liam said, pulling out his stolen gun.
"Wait!" Emily stopped him. "Gunshots will bring every guard in the building."
While they argued, Alex inspected the keypad. The numbers looked worn, especially 1, 3, 5, and 7. On instinct, he tried a combination: 1-3-5-7.
The door clicked open.
"How did you—" Ethan began.
"Reed likes patterns," Alex stated. "And those numbers were worn down the most."
Inside, Sophia looked up, her eyes widening. "Alex? How did you—"
"No time," he said, untying her quickly. "We need to go."
As they ran back into the hallway, chaos erupted around them. Guards ran in all directions, yelling about escaped specimens. Whatever Jasmine had released was causing major problems.
"This way," Liam directed, leading them toward a service lift.
They piled in, hearts beating as the doors closed just before two guards rounded the corner. The elevator began to rise.
"When we reach the surface, we run straight for the trees," Liam instructed. "Don't stop for anything."
The elevator dinged as it reached the top floor. When the doors opened, they found themselves in what looked like a regular office building. Through the windows, Alex could see woods about a hundred yards away.
"Ready?" Liam asked, his hand on the exit door. "Three, two, one—go!"
They burst through the door and ran across the open ground toward the trees. Guards shouted behind them. A bullet pinged off the ground near Alex's foot.
"Keep going!" Sophia yelled, surprisingly fast for someone who'd been tied up for days.
They reached the trees, the gunfire fading as they slipped into the woods. Liam led them along a narrow path until they reached a small clearing where an old pickup truck was hidden under bushes.
"Everyone in," he ordered, throwing off the bushes. "Quickly!"
As they climbed into the truck, a blast rocked the ground. They turned to see flames rising from the facility they'd just fled.
"What was that?" Emily gasped.
"My parting gift," Liam said grimly, starting the engine. "I planted charges before I came for you. Reed's main lab is gone."
As they drove away, Alex looked at his sister beside him. "Are you okay? What did they do to you?"
"I'm fine," Sophia said, but her voice shook. "Alex, there's something you need to know about Dad—"
Suddenly she jerked forward, her body going stiff. Her eyes rolled back, and she began to shake furiously.
"What's happening?" Alex cried, grabbing her shoulders.
"Hold her still!" Ethan moved to help, using his jacket to protect her head.
As they tried to stabilize her, Sophia's skin started to ripple strangely. A seam formed along her hairline.
"She's one of them," Liam said, his voice cold. "A robot."
"No," Alex whispered. "That's impossible. She knew things only Sophia would know."
The seizure stopped as quickly as it had started. Sophia—or whatever she was—lay still, her eyes closed. Then, slowly, they opened again.
But they weren't Sophia's eyes anymore. They glowed with an eerie blue light.
"Protocol activated," she said in a mechanical voice. "Returning to primary directive."
Her hand shot out, grabbing Alex's throat with incredible strength.
"Target acquired," the thing that wasn't his sister said. "Commencing retrieval."
